Blog Hopping

Today I wanted to chat about reading blogs and blog hopping. I have been reading various author and review blogs for four years now.  In the beginning, I added new blogs to my feed-reader almost every week. But over the past year, my blog hopping and finding new-to-me blogs has all but diminished. I check my feed-reader 1-2 times per week, and I do a lot of skimming. One thing I've noticed lately is a mismatch between the blogs I follow and the type of books that I like to read. What has happened is I now follow a lot of blogs that don't review books in the genres I most enjoy reading. I don't know if their reading habits changed over time, or if I just tend to read too narrow a scope of books, but it's not really working for me any more.

So I'm on the hunt for new-to-me blogs. I'm looking for blogs that primary focus on book reviews and discussions in the paranormal romance and urban fantasy genres. I'd love your feedback!

What blogs to you read religiously? Can you suggest a blog/s that focus on reviews of paranormal romance and urban fantasy books?

Happy Reading!

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Maggi Myers

Hello Readers! Today I bring you debut author, Maggi Myers. Maggi self-published her first title, The Final Piece, earlier this month.

Maggi was born in West Des Moines, Iowa and raised in Miami, Florida. She has a deep love for The Heartland and really good Cuban food. When she isn't writing, you can find her reading or singing into the end of her hairbrush. She's a steel magnolia and a mischief maker, wrapped up and tied with a sarcasm bow.

Currently she resides in Greensboro, NC with her incredible husband and sons. For more about Maggi and future projects, you can follow her on Twitter @Magnolia_B_My and Facebook.

Maggi is here today to share a little about The Final Piece. Keep reading to learn more about her debut title and enter to win a SIGNED copy! GIVEAWAY details are below.

Please help me welcome Maggi to That’s What I’m Talking About.

Thank you for having me here today! I’m so excited about my debut novel The Final Piece.  The story follows the tumultuous life of Beth Bradshaw and the cast of characters that come and go throughout the years. Her story is about overcoming a painful past and finding redemption in putting the pieces back together.

Eight years ago the character of Tommy was born out of the grief of losing someone who meant the world to me. I wrote him a letter detailing all of the ways he shaped my life and how grateful I’d always be for his friendship. When I left that letter at his grave, I was overwhelmed with the feeling that my friend was there with me and I immediately heard Tommy’s voice in my head. It comforted me to create a character that possessed all the things I loved and missed about my friend; it still does.

Here is one of my favorite Tommy scenes:

After dinner, Tommy grabs his guitar case and plops in sand by the fire. As he starts tuning the strings, I am unable to resist the pull of the notes and move to sit closer to him. He looks up at my approach, giving me a brilliant smile and begins strumming the chords to “Beth” by Kiss.

I groan in mock misery and throw my hand up to my forehead, “Doesn’t that ever get old?” I whine.

He stops strumming and kicks my foot. “Kiss hater,” he laughs, “have any requests?”

I shake my head and wait for him to start again. This time he chooses an upbeat song, laced with a little reggae.

“I like this,” I encourage as I subconsciously begin swaying to the rhythm. He starts singing about how short life is and how we shouldn’t hesitate to grab it before it goes by. Slick move, tricking me with a carefree island beat that carries hidden philosophical words.

“I’m yours-ah,” he exaggerates the last line and chord. His enthusiasm is charming my suspicious nature into submission. As if he can sense a shift in my demeanor, he starts to play one of my favorite songs.

Brown noser.

I lean back on my elbows and close my eyes as the sound of the notes moving across the fret board flow through me. Tommy starts to sing the first verse and I join him on harmony during the chorus. We drift along, singing in sync together like we have a hundred times before. I open my eyes when the song ends and find Tommy’s eyes swimming with unspoken emotion. “You sound just like your mama.”

The praise makes my heart full. “I do? Thanks, Tommy!” No one has ever said that I remind them of Mom in any way. Mostly I hear about how I’m not like her at all.

“You are more alike than you know, baby girl.” He chuckles.
When I sit up and brush the sand from my elbows, I see Ryan sitting across the fire, watching us. I hold my breath, waiting for him to start making fun of me. One side of his mouth tilts into a lopsided grin that starts my heart tripping again.

“Pretty.” He says.

My mouth drops open in cartoonish fashion at that one word. Tommy’s barking laughter reverberates in my ears and my entire body turns beet red.

“Your voice, Beth!” Ryan stammers, glancing back and forth between Tommy’s amused face and my shocked one.

“I know what you meant,” I lie. For a moment, I had been soaring at the thought of him calling me pretty. I stand and brush the rest of the sand off me, not wanting to stick around for round two of Awkward Conversations With Beth and Ryan.

“No! I mean, you are pretty and all,” he is stuttering now. “I just meant...I mean, you have a great voice but...you’re fourteen!” He’s rambling, which has Tommy howling. This only sends Ryan deeper into his despair when he blurts out, “Knock it off, Tommy! It’s not like that, I am not a pedophile!”

There it is. I can never get too comfortable without something dredging it back to the surface. I picture a neon pink sign flashing bright cursive letters above my head, “Pedophile Plaything.” My subconscious is cruel enough, but Ryan’s words sting like I have been slapped. My eyes blur with my hurt. It is a direct contradiction to the practiced smile I have cemented on my face. Before the tears can spill over, I spin on my heel to scurry out of there.

Within a few quick steps, warm hands grip my shoulders and spin me around. Tommy squeezes me against his chest whispering into my hair so no one else can hear, “He doesn’t know, Beth. He has no idea. He just thinks you’re embarrassed because he said you’re pretty. Shoot, he can hardly see past his own verbal diarrhea. He’s squirming over there.” Tommy’s words rumble deep in his chest, against my ear.

“It doesn’t matter,” I whisper back. Who cares whether he’s figured it out or not, it doesn’t change what I am or what’s been done.

“It does matter because it is your story to tell to whomever, whenever you want to tell it.”

Tommy’s words are reassuring, but I still want to find a big hole to climb inside. I let go of him and peek around his back at Ryan. He is sitting with his arms draped across his bent knees. He is shaking his head at the sand, and I wonder if he is replaying the scene in his head, like I am. He lifts his hand to run his fingers through his hair while he scans the beach.
“It’s better if I just scoot. Pops and Gran are packing up, anyway.” I wipe my face and smile at Tommy’s concerned expression. “I love you, Tommy. What would I do without you?”

“You’ve never got to worry about it, baby girl. I am always here. Always,” he promises with a kiss to the top of my head.

Thanks again for sharing your time with me today! Make sure you check back later for the review.

Thank you, Maggi for stopping by. It is a true delight to have you here!

As Maggi mentioned, stop by later today for Vampbard’s review of The Final Piece.

E-reader vs. Book

In today's day and age, books are available to readers 24 hours a day.  A reader has access to thousands of books on your phone, you can pre-order favorites online and have them delivered, and you can visit your local library or book store. I for one love this!

What I also love is the rise of the ebook. Thanks to the giants like Kindle and Nook, e-readers are a common gadget in our electronic arsenal. I myself have been reading via a Kindle (or the Kindle app) since late 2008. The first appeal was that I could get a book whenever I wanted. I was like a kid in a candy store. I also liked that I could  easily look up words I didn't know instead of reading over them. But I still preferred the feel of a paperback in my hands.

It wasn't until I began to review books in early 2010 that I fell completely in love with reading on a Kindle. First - I love that I can take notes and highlight passages right within the text. GENIUS! I also love the "cloud" feature - so if I forget and leave my Kindle at home, I can still read on my phone!

But best of all is the search/look up function. When I started writing reviews, I no longer was able to read books within a series back-to-back, and my memory of characters and events was a little shoddy. If I had the previous book on my Kindle, I could look up events and characters using keywords. This is such an important feature for me now - I use it within books and not just looking up old books. For example, when I'm halfway through a book and "Mrs. Brown" enters the room (and I don't remember something about her), I can look up to see what we have been told about her. If I can't recall the hero's favorite flavor of ice cream (because it is critical!), I can type in a couple keywords and voila!

So now, although I still read a paperback when tossed my way, I prefer to read on my Kindle. How about you? Do you prefer an e-reader or a book when reading? What are your pros and cons?

Thanks for stopping by to chat!

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Jennifer Ashley

Hello Readers! Today I bring you romance author Jennifer Ashley. New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Jennifer Ashley has lived and traveled all over the world, and now lives in the Southwest. She writes historical, paranormal, and contemporary romance as Jennifer Ashley; mysteries as Ashley Gardner; and paranormal romance and urban fantasy as Allyson James.

Jennifer enjoys writing and reading above all else, but her hobbies include cooking, hiking, playing flute and guitar, painting, and building miniature rooms and dollhouses.

Today Jennifer is going to tell us about her research for writing about Shifters. Please help me welcome Jennifer to That’s What I’m Talking About.

Thanks so much for asking me to post! I’m excited about the release of Mate Claimed (Shifters Unbound Book 4).

If you’re new to the Shifter series, this is a contemporary paranormal romance series about shape-shifters who have revealed themselves to the world, only to be rounded up and made to live in Shiftertowns and wear shock collars to control their violence. Or so humans think. The Shifters know who’s really in charge.

In Mate Claimed, Eric Warden, the leader of his Shiftertown must round up a half-Shifter half-human woman who’s been passing for human all her life. She’s resistant, not wanting to reveal her Shifter side to the world, but her Shifter instincts are making her crazy, and Eric fears she’ll go feral if he doesn’t bring her in.

It’s a hot, sexy book. :-) But also has a meaty plot and lots of heart.

I’ve been asked how I do research for writing about the Shifters. I’ve always loved animals (horses, dogs, cats), and am very aware that they each have their own personalities, wants and needs. Even the cats I have now—twins—are completely different from each other (though the same in many entertaining ways—for “entertaining” read “exasperating.”)

I’m also lucky enough to live near a private wildlife refuge which rescues big cats, wolves, bears, and other animals that have been mistreated, illegally captured, or abandoned. The animals live in giant enclosures in the countryside, and the owners and caretakers do lectures on animal behavior. It is fascinating to watch big cats of different species interact with each other—the smallest cats, like leopards, often are the most dominant. Watching a giant tiger rub heads with a panther is an amazing thing.

My Shifters are very tactile—they touch and hug for reassurance (and for more fun things as well :-)). The humans who enter Shiftertown are often startled to see male Shifters hugging each other for comfort, or a whole family in a group cuddle. But the humans soon learn it’s not so bad!

When I’m writing about other kinds of shifters—such as dragons (see the Stormwalker series I write as Allyson James), I am free to make up whatever I want. Fun stuff! But I take as given that a dragon is an animal, and their human sides take on animal instincts (scent, ability to see in well in the dark, possessiveness of a mate).

Why do I like shapeshifters so much? I don’t know. When I first started reading fantasy way back when, I wasn’t always as fond of shapeshifters. How can you communicate with someone when they’re an animal? Or a dragon?

But the more I wrote about them, the more I liked them. Now, I can’t imagine not writing a shapeshifter book. Mine are hot, hunky males who can change in to warm, fuzzy animals. And it’s such fun to write about the cubs!

I hope you enjoy my shapeshifter world and Mate Claimed.

I’ll do a giveaway—comment on why you like shapeshifter books (or why you don’t!) and be qualified to win a signed book.

Thanks so much, Jennifer! For more about Mate Claimed and the  giveaway, read below!

You can find Jennifer on line at

Shifters Unbound #4
Berkley, Oct. 2, 2012
To protect her, he will unleash the beast within…

Eric Warden knows that half-Shifter wildcat Iona is passing for human, living without a Collar in the human world. He also knows that if she does not acknowledge her Shifter nature and her mating hunger, it could kill her. Iona finds the mysterious and dangerous Eric, a wildcat and leader of his Shiftertown, haunting her dreams, but she vows never to "come out" and take the Collar, fearing backlash against her mother and sister for hiding the fact that she's Shifter. But Eric is a compelling Shifter male, and Iona's hunger calls to him.

GIVEAWAY:
Thank you to Jennifer Ashley for stopping by today and also thanks to Jennifer and Berkley for generously donating one (1) copy of Mate Claimed to giveaway. To be entered, please use the RAFFLECOPTER form below. As part of your entry, please leave a comment answering the question: Why do you like shapeshifter books (or why don’t you!)? You do not need to be a google friends connect follower of my blog, but it is always appreciated. Contest is open from October 2, 2012 until Tuesday October 9, 2012 at 12:01 AM EDT. Author Interview & Giveaway: Bec McMaster

Today I have the honor of bringing to you author Bec McMaster. Bec lives in a small country town in Victoria, Australia, with her boyfriend, two budgies with a thirst for flesh, and a beautiful dog named Kobe. She grew up either with her nose in a book or writing, and she never understood why other people didn’t get to watch ‘all the movies in their heads.’ Following a lifelong love affair with fantasy, she discovered romance at the age of sixteen and hasn’t looked back.

When she’s not writing she likes to read, go hiking with her boyfriend, pour over travel brochures, and go to the gym. She’s addicted to travel and loves to set her books in foreign places. She says that it’s the next best thing to traveling there. One day she vows to see the entire world, whether it’s by plane, paper or imagination.

Bec’s new Steampunk title, Kiss of Steel debuted this month with Sourcebook Publishing. Please help me welcome Bec toThat’s What I’m Talking About.
Twimom: Bec, welcome and thank you for stopping by.

Bec: Hi! Thank you for having me!

Twimom: On your website you state that other than a writer, you’ve wanted to be an archaeologist, a travel agent, paleontologist, biologist, librarian and horse manager. So... was there a winner? Did you get a “day job?”

Bec: I did. I always wanted to study Creative Writing at University, but succumbed to the ‘get a real job’ lure and studied Biology instead. I love Biology, but the idea of being trapped in a lab for many years began to feel a bit stifling, so I ended up going into beauty therapy. I’ve always wanted to travel, so I figured getting a job in a trade would make it easy to find work anywhere.

Then three years ago, I decided it was time to do something I really wanted to do. I began a course in tourism, but just as I finished the course I sold Kiss of Steel and well… Tourism was always number two on the list.

Its funny how things come full circle. I could have saved a lot of time if I’d just listened to my instincts. Or maybe it was meant to happen the way it did.

Twimom: And you want to see the entire world... what a wonderful aspiration! What is the most exciting/exotic local you’ve visited in real life? What is the number one place you’d like to visit if you had the financing?

Bec: There are so many places I’ve been that I’ve loved, but two of the most exotic would have to be Russia and Turkey. I loved the spice markets and bazaars in Istanbul, but my absolute favorite place was Russia. Russian history fascinates me and I could wander through museums or palaces all day.

If I could go anywhere in the world – money being no object… Wow, that’s a tough one to pick! It changes frequently, but I have always wanted to spend a month or two in Egypt. I’m not a cruise ship/five star hotel kind of person, so the idea of sleeping beneath the stars on a felucca on the Nile, or scuba diving in the Red Sea appeals. And of course, more museums, temples, palaces…

Twimom: So... Steampunk! Kiss of Steel is the debut title in your new London Steampunk Series. Please tell us more about the world you’ve created and what to expect in the first book.

Bec: Kiss of Steel was so much fun to write. Set in my steam-fuelled world of London, where the City is ruled by the aristocratic Echelon and people pay their taxes in blood, it’s about a young woman on the run from a dangerous duke. Honoria Todd seeks safety in the slums of Whitechapel with her brother and sister, and a secret the Duke of Vickers would kill to get his hands on. The only one she can turn to for protection is Blade, the notorious Devil of Whitechapel, who has his own plans for Honoria – and Vickers.

Twimom: There are many types of stories that fall under the steampunk genre... How would you describe your world? Romance? Mystery/suspense? Do you get into the nitty-gritty of how the gadgets all work, or are the gadgets more part of the scenery? (I’m an engineer, I love gadgets!)

Bec: Kiss of Steel is a mix of paranormal romance and steampunk and should also appeal to historical romance lovers.

There are three basic classes in my London; the blue bloods of the Echelon, the humans who serve their needs and mechs, those that were forced by circumstance to take an artificial limb and are considered less than human because of it. After the French guillotined their blue blood aristocracy, the British Echelon sat up and took notice. To prevent the same uprising in Britain, they created an automaton army that keeps the humans and mechs in their place. There are a lot of steampunk elements that revolve around the world; the draining factories where the blood gathered in the taxes is stored, the enclaves where the mech’s live and work and some secret research the anti-blue blood humanist movement is involved in. Of course, this will all be explored more in subsequent books as there can’t be steampunk without the punk!

As for gadgets, Honoria’s father was a scientist who created all manner of weapons for the Duke of Vickers before he died. Honoria has access to all of his knowledge – which she will need. I need to know how the gadgets work (it’s the same with the paranormal aspects), so there is enough description for readers to know what each gadget is and does, but not pages and pages of it.

Twimom: Other than your Steampunk series, do you write any other genres?

Bec: I do! I love anything speculative and paranormal, so if something catches my interest I write it. I love to write Paranormal Romance and I have a few Urban Fantasy ideas bubbling away. The two main characteristics you’ll find, no matter what genre I write is that it’s often fast-paced adventure and I love to really develop the world-building.

Twimom: I always like to ask authors about their reading habits... What types of books do you enjoy reading? What is your favorite read so far in 2012?

Bec: Again, I read what I write. Mainly steampunk romance, paranormal romance, fantasy, sci-fi, UF or some paranormal-based YA. I don’t have a lot of time to read, so I tend to buy more than I can get around to. My TBR pile looks like that hoarders show.

As to books that blew my mind in the first half of 2012 – the Downside Ghosts series by Stacia Kane (UF), Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor (YA), Firelight by Kristen Callihan (PR) and Alliance Forged by Kylie Griffin (Fantasy Romance).

Twimom: What upcoming releases are you most excited to read?

Bec: I just bought Riveted by Meljean Brook and Archangel’s Storm by Nalini Singh. I’m also halfway through The Iron Wyrm Affair by Lilith Saintcrow. September seems to have a heap of fantastic titles out.

Twimom: Oh yes! I agree! (By the way, Riveted is my favorite read so far of 2012!)

Bec, thank you so much for taking the time to tell my readers a little bit about yourselves and your writing. It was wonderful chatting with you.

Bec: Thank you so much for having me! It’s been fun.

You can find Bec McMaster on line at
Blog

Lara Adrian.  January 24, 2012, Dell.
I can't believe this is the end of the series!  Ms. Adrian did a really great job tying up loose ends.  I hope to see more of the Breed from her in the future...I'll miss them!

Award:  Best Series Ending EVER!

EDITED TO ADD (by Twimom): This ISN’T the end of the series! Edge of Dawn, the 11th MB book is set to release in January, 2013.

A Taste of Midnight (Midnight Breed 9.5)
Lara Adrian.  December 5, 2011, Dell.
I think that reading this novella increased my experience in reading the series-culmination, Darker after Midnight.  I think it's definitely a MUST READ, for fans of the Midnight Breed series.

The Darkest Seduction (Lords of the Underworld 9)
Gena Showalter.  February 28, 2012, HQN Books.
I adored Paris' book.  I thought that it was a great addition to Ms. Showalter's Lords of the Underworld series, one of my absolute favorites.

Award:  Best Title from Long-Standing Series

Magic Mike starring Channing Tatum

This was the best movie to attend with one of your Girls that actually GET your penchant for smut & eyecandy!  I was lucky enough to attend with Twimom!
Award:  Hottest (Chick) Flick of the Summer

Butterfly
Katherine Harvey. 1989, Guild.

I NEVER predicted the outcome of this story!  Great read for the lover of suspense and psychological thrillers.

Award:  Best Romantic Suspense

The Opportunist (Love Me With Lies #1)
Tarryn Fisher.  November 14, 2011, Self-Published.

This was a great story...especially from one of my first ventures into reading a self-published author.

A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy #1)
Deborah Harkness.  February 8, 2011, Viking.
What I loved the most about A Discovery of Witches is that Ms. Harkness wrote about something with which I was familiar.  Researching.  Her description, while not overboard, made me feel as though I was right there!

Award:  Best New-To-Me & Breakout

If a Tree Falls at Lunch Period
Gennifer Choldenko.  September 1, 2007, Harcourt Books.

Great read for 8-12 year-olds.  Provides a unique and realistic perspective to get these kids asking the all-important 'Who am I?' question.

Award:  Best Young Adult in a LONG time!

All That Bleeds (Etherlin #1)
Kimberley Frost.  January 3, 2012, Berkley Sensation.

This initial book of Ms. Frost's Etherlin series integrates paranormal and mythology in a seamless manner, without hiding the paranormal from the human population.  Unique approach.  Superior execution.
Award:  Best Integration of Paranormal Elements

50 Shades of Grey
E.L. James.  May 26, 2011, Vintage.

Pop lit for Summer 2012.  I've read better 'mommy porn'.  Tugged at my Twilight heart-strings.

50 Shades Darker
E.L. James.  September 15, 2011, The Writer's Coffee Shop Publishing House

50 Shades Darker was my favorite book in the 50 Shades Trilogy.  I think it was my favorite because we learned the most about Christian, and saw his character evolve so much.

50 Shades Freed
E.L. James.  January 19, 2012, The Writer's Coffee Shop Publishing House

The ending of the 50 Shades Trilogy was definitely a let-down and felt like a cop-out.  I was definitely hoping for something more than sunshine, flowers, rainbows and unicorns.

Award:  Lamest Ending to a Series

So what was on your summer reading list? Were there any breakouts for you? What about disappointments?
