Summer Vacation Part 2
Checking in from Summer Vacation again... We are 10 days into my 2 week trip to visit the folks. The extended family all left yesterday morning and it’s a bit quieter now. We’ve had great weather, lots of fun, and plenty to eat and drink. I am glad to have a little down time before we head back home.
Here are some of the fun activities I’ve done since arriving here:
Beach Time
Fair Time
Margaritas
Eating
4th of July Parade
Lake Time
Fireworks
Eating
Boat Time
Putt-Putt
Beer Time
Farmer's Market
Bonfire
My cousin and her awesome guy got engaged while here!
Did I mention Eating?
With all this fun and excitement, I have only finished ONE BOOK on my “vacation reading list.” I’m about halfway done with another. I’m still waiting for my pre-ordered books from Amazon to get here, and I’m not sure how much more reading I’ll get done.
So here is my vacation reading tally:
The Darkest Lie by Gena Showalter
Demon Blood by Meljean Brook * waiting for Amazon delivery
Bonds of Justice by Nalini Singh * waiting for Amazon delivery
Eve of Samhain by Lisa Sanchez - currently reading
Tempting the Fire by Sydney Croft
What have you been up to this past week? Have you finished any of your short-term goals?
Happy Reading and Happy Summer!!

Friday Blog Hop
Happy Friday!! I'm participating in two blog hops this week:
I'm also participating in Parajunkee's Follow Friday blog hop:
Parajunkee's View is a great place to check out - you can stop in by clicking HERE!
It's been a while since I've hopped by Crazy-For-Books and participated in the blog hop, so I wanted to pop in and say HELLO! Please leave me a note to let me know you came by from the Blog Hop. Also, if you are a new follower, please leave me a link to your blog so that I may stop by and visit you!
One of my favorite authors is Nalini Singh. Her Psy/Changeling series is amazing. Ms. Singh is a master at character development, she writes sensual love scenes, the action is always exciting, and her over-all story arcs are well thought out and extremely engrossing. I can't wait to read her newest release, Bonds of Justice, as soon as Amazon delivers it to my door!

Review of The Darkest Lie
The Darkest Lie
Author: Gena Showalter
Release Date: June 29, 2010
Publisher: Harlequin
Lords of the Underworld Series Book #6
ISBN: #0373774613
Genre: Paranormal Romance
From the author’s website:
Forced to his knees in agony whenever he speaks the truth, Gideon can recognize any lie—until he captures Scarlet, a demon-possessed immortal who claims to be his long-lost wife. He doesn’t remember the beautiful female, much less wedding — or bedding — her. But he wants to . . . almost as much as he wants her.
But Scarlet is keeper of Nightmares, too dangerous to roam free, and a future with her means risking everything. Especially as Gideon’s enemies draw closer . . . and the truth threatens to destroy all he’s come to love . . .
But Scarlet is keeper of Nightmares, too dangerous to roam free, and a future with her means risking everything. Especially as Gideon’s enemies draw closer . . . and the truth threatens to destroy all he’s come to love . . .
What I’m talking about:
We were introduced to Scarlet in the last Lords of the Underworld story, The Darkest Passion, and my interest was piqued... a Lord that was once married and happy? I didn’t think that was possible knowing their tortured pasts and battles with their inner demons. But enter captive demi-goddess Scarlet who claims that Gideon, keeper of Lies, was once her husband - yet he doesn’t recall a thing. However, he knows he must have a connection with Scarlet based on their matching tattoos and the dreams he has had about her.
The story unfolds as Gideon tries to soften Scarlet so she’ll tell him about their shared past. She is reluctant to tell him anything because she is hurt and heart-broken from all of the years he has abandoned her. Yet as they play games back and forth, they grow to trust and love one another.
I have to say that I was a bit disappointed with the story of Gideon and Scarlet. To me, Scarlet wasn’t the strong warrior woman that our Lords have come to love and respect. She was wishy-washy and I felt she didn’t hold her own in the story. In the beginning she didn’t want to get her heart broken by Gideon again. She refused to tell him anything about their past even when he clearly didn’t recall a thing. By the end of the story she didn’t want to be with Gideon because she was afraid she’d be the cause of harm to him (via her aunt and/or mom). She was looking for any excuse not to be with Gideon and she comes across weak and not confident. Even in the climax of the story, when once again she’s being hesitant with her feelings, all Gideon has to use is 2-3 lines of reverse psychology and she’s changed her mind again. I just couldn’t connect emotionally with the couple and was frustrated with Scarlet’s character.
HOWEVER, Gideon and Scarlet were not the whole book and HOLY MOLY to all those other parts! This book sets the stage for future story lines and takes our Lords in some exciting directions. We learn some VERY INTERESTING news about the lovely William that I cannot wait for Gena to explore. We get a glimpse at the upcoming story lines for Amun (Secrets) and Strider (Defeat) - both were left wide open and I am anxious to find out what will happen next. We also get a glimpse of Paris’s “girl,” Sienna, and her current condition. One other interesting side story looked at the inner workings of godly politics. These “other” parts of the book were well written and made the entire book better.
This book was a good read, and a must for all Lord fans. It was not my favorite book in the series, but was enjoyable and fun.

Sunday Snippets #15
From Midnight Awakening by Lara Adrian.
“You say you don’t play games, but you’re a master at it, Tegan. In fact, I think you’ve been playing at them for so long you can’t remember how to be real anymore.”
He was hardly aware of this own movements as he whirled back on her with a furious roar. Distance closed in fractional seconds -- a blink of time between the moment he’d been turned away from Elise and the next, when he was bearing down on her like a train in motion, pushing her with both the force of his will and his body until they both slammed up against the closed door.
He pinned her there, between the hard, unyielding length of him and the thick plank of oak at her back.
“Is this real enough for you, sweetheart?”
He hissed the words at her, his lips curled back from his fangs. Desire had him livid, fully transformed into the savage side of his nature. With a growl, he bent his head and took her mouth in a hot, demanding kiss.

Quickie Review - Bound by Deception
Quickie Review:
Bound by Deception
Author: Christa Paige
Release Date: available now
Publisher: Ebook by Liquid Silver Books
Blood-Vine Series Book #1
ISBN: #978-1-59578-600-5
Genre: Paranormal Romance/Novella length
NOTE: This book was given to me by the author after I told her how much I enjoyed her second Blood-Vine story, Bound by Rebellion (review HERE).
In order to find a compatible mate, Anna undergoes the ancient blood-rite of her people. She is shocked to learn that her brother has interfered with the process and can’t be sure that Dimitri is her true mate. However, soon Anna realizes that her desire for Dimitri is unstoppable and the two come together in an explosion of passion. Waiting in the wings is a dangerous male who feels that Anna is his to claim. Will Dimitri be able to complete the bonding and protect his beloved Anna in time?
It’s always a bit tough going backwards and read an earlier story in a book series, but not in this case. In Bound by Rebellion, main characters Luke and Kat discuss Anna (Luke’s sister) and Dimitri and the situation that surrounds their story. Reading Bound by Deception filled in several details and completed the background picture for me.
Anna and Dimitri’s story is sexy, quick-paced and exciting. Although not as well-developed as the second Blood-Vine book, it provides greater detail on the origins of the Kan Asma people and the blood-rite mating process, which proved very interesting. Anna and Dimitri are sizzling and their story is a good one. I recommend this short-length book and suggest you read it before reading Bound by Rebellion, but as I discovered, it isn’t necessary.
