Sunday Snippets #32

From Play of Passion by Nalini Singh
Release date: November 2, 2010
Andrew heard Indigo moan, felt her body soften a delicious fraction before the lieutenant got herself under control. Pushing off his shoulders, she rolled away to crouch beside him on the forest floor, her namesake eyes bright with the wolf’s night-glow gaze. “I’ll forgive you for slobbering over me that one time. But do it again and I’ll put you on your ass.”
“I’m already there.” He sat up. “And I seem to recall you slobbering back.” Her tongue had been a sleek, fast dart in his mouth before that damn self-discipline of hers had kicked in. “Want to do it some more?”
She pushed back her hair. “I give up. Stay here. Die of blood loss. I’m going to go slip into a nice warm bath and eat the slice of New York cheesecake I bribed Lucy to sneak up to me past the ravaging hordes.”
“You have cheesecake?” He prowled over to crouch by her. It was hard, so fucking hard, to pretend this was only a game, to play with her, when all he wanted to do was bury his face in her neck and just ... be.

Review: Geist

Geist
Release Date: October 26, 2010
Publisher: Ace Fantasy
Book of the Order #1
ISBN: #978-0441019618
Genre: Fantasy
Format(s): paperback (304 pgs), e-book
I received a copy of this book from the publisher for the purposes of an honest review.
From the back cover:

Between the living and the dead is the Order of the Deacons, protectors of the Empire, guardians against possession, sentinels enlisted to ward off the malevolent haunting of the geists...

Among the most powerful of the Order is Sorcha, now thrust into partnership with the novice Deacon, Merrick Chambers. They have been dispatched to the isolated village of Ulrich to aide the Priory with a surge of violent geist activity. With them is Raed Rossin, Pretender to the throne that Sorcha is sworn to protect, and bearer of a terrible curse.

But what greets them in the strange settlement is something far more predatory and more horrifying than any mere haunting. And as she uncovers a tradition of twisted rituals passed down through the dark reaches of history, Sorcha will be forced to reconsider everything she thinks she knows.  Even if she makes it out of Ulrich alive, what in the hell is she returning to?
What I’m talking about:
Welcome to Arykham, where the presence of ghosts and spirits (geists) are unfortunately commonplace. But thankfully, the geists conform to a set of known parameters, and the Order protects the citizens from ultimate danger. The setting of the book, Arykaham, is historical in nature - no electricity, and horses, ships and dirigibles are the modes of transportation, etc. The society is run by an Emperor, with the Order acting as a quasi-religious group that protects the world from the geists.
The book opens with Sorcha and her husband fighting off a powerful geist attack on a crowd.  In this initial attack, Sorcha’s husband is brutally injured by the geist - something that goes against the “known rules” for the Otherside. With her husband (and partner) disabled, Sorcha is given a new partner and sent north to help the town of Ulrich.
Enter novice Merrick Chambers. He has a history with Sorcha, although she doesn’t know it. He is untested and a bit scared. But soon the pair discovers that all of the “known rules” for the Otherside are being tossed out the window, which forces them to rely on and trust each other.  And after they meet up with Raed Rossin, the usurped Prince to the throne, they stumble upon a vast conspiracy that rocks the very foundation of the Order.
Ms. Ballantine has created an elaborate world that is rich in details with its own unique mythology.  And due to this, the book is not a quick and easy read.  Between the lexicon of the Order, the intricate mythology (world) and the complex storyline full of twists and turns, it can be formidable at times. The first part of the book - the “getting to know you” phase - was tough, but soon I got into the “honeymoon” phase, and the story was so interesting and I enjoyed it immensely.  My only request: a list of characters/titles/positions and glossary (with the runes listed) in any future books.
Sorcha is frustrated with her situation in life - her loveless (and from the sounds of it emotionally abusive) marriage and being sent up to Ulrich...  So she is pleasantly surprised by the depth of the bond that develops with Merrick.  And Merrick - scared as a child after watching Sorcha go medieval on some spirits that also left his father killed, learns to trust Sorcha.  Watching Merrick grow stronger and more confident was a treat.
Tossed into the mix is Raed, who carries a deep secret of his own - a curse that unleashes a terrible beast when touched by the spirits.  He has been an outcast and fugitive for years, and Sorcha is uncertain what to make of him. Yet he awakens parts of her that she no longer believed to be alive.  In attempts to leash the beast within Raed, Sorcha forms a unique bond with him, which is the beginning of something much deeper.  I loved the passion between Sorcha and Raed, and I was left wanting to know what is going happen next because this clearly isn’t the end of the story.
Although the book is full of exciting action and amazing adventure, the trio created of Sorcha, Merrick and Raed is fascinating and the true heart of the story. Ms. Ballantine does an amazing job with the character development.  The trio each sees things in a unique way, bringing a full spectrum of views in each situation. I enjoyed the give and take that makes this relationship work.
With layer after layer unfolding before me - causing several twists and turns, I was on the proverbial edge of my seat. The book came to a satisfying conclusion, yet it was open-ended for subsequent stories. I for one, cannot wait!  I want to know more about the secrets of the Sensitives. I want to know more about how the bond works.  And I want to know what will become of this amazing trio!
My Rating:
Really enjoyed - strongly recommend (A-)

Review: Play of Passion

Play of Passion
Author: Nalini Singh
Release Date: November 2, 2010
Publisher: Berkley Sensation
ISBN: #978-0425237793
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): paperback (321 pages), e-book
I received a copy of this book from the publisher for the purposes of an honest review.
From the author’s website:

Passion and reason collide with explosive force in the newest installment of Nalini Singh’s “mesmerizing” Psy/Changeling series. As a conflict with Pure Psy looms on the horizon, two powerful wolves fight a far more intimate war of their own…

In his position as tracker for the SnowDancer pack, it’s up to Drew Kincaid to rein in rogue changelings who have lost control of their animal halves—even if it means killing those who have gone too far. But nothing in his life has prepared him for the battle he must now wage to win the heart of a woman who makes his body ignite…and who threatens to enslave his wolf.

Lieutenant Indigo Riviere doesn’t easily allow skin privileges, especially of the sensual kind—and the last person she expects to find herself craving is the most wickedly playful male in the den. Everything she knows tells her to pull back before the flames burn them both to ash…but she hasn’t counted on Drew’s will.

Now, two of SnowDancer’s most stubborn wolves find themselves playing a hot, sexy game even as lethal danger stalks the very place they call home…
What I’m talking about:
After two books which did not feature a Changeling in the “main couple,” Nalini Singh makes up for it in her ninth Psy-Changling story with the pairing of two Wolf Breeds: Drew and Indigo. And what a treat it is! For me, the Changelings are the heart and soul of Ms. Singh’s series, and this book highlights all the wonder that is Changeling. They are full of powerful emotions that help shape Ms. Singh’s sensual, yet action-packed world.

For those unfamiliar with this incredible series, the world is made up of 3 races: Psy: cerebral and emotionally void people that hold most political and financial offices; Changeling: shifters of many different species, in-tune with nature, emotionally fierce and loyal; and humans: the supporting race in the middle. The books focus primarily on two dominant Changeling packs: SnowDancers, which are wolves and DarkRiver, which are leopards.
Play of Passion is set in SnowDancer territory - the home of the wolf pack. We learn a great deal more about the SnowDancers, which was a real treat. With the focus away from the cats of DarkRiver, we begin to see that the wolves are an equally, if not more dominant force in the Northern California region.
The primary focus of this book is the love story between Drew and Indigo. She is a powerful, dominant female, only out-ranked by 2 wolves. Drew is a predatory, less-dominant male that does not fit into Indigo’s image of pack hierarchy - nor suitable mate. Drew spends most of his time trying to convince Indigo that her perceptions are false, and of course, he makes a few predictable mistakes along the way. Their dance is a beautiful one, and because the Changelings wear their hearts on their sleeves, we are privy to an amazingly romantic tale.  Of course, the Changelings are also known for their need to touch and have “skin privileges,” so this is an extremely sexy story!
The overall series story-arc of Psy verses Changeling and the threatening collapse of the Psy Silence pretty much takes a back seat to the love story. The SnowDancers discover that there are Psys trespassing onto their land, leaving behind locator beacons.  The Pack must race against an unknown clock to figure out what the Psys are doing and who is behind it all. With respect to the Psy-Changeling conflict, this book felt like a set-up for the next story: Kiss of Snow, which will complete the current series story arc. In Play of Passion, we see the Psy flex their muscle, we hear of lines being drawn, but there isn’t much progress in the fight.
I do have to mention this for all of those fans of the series... we are treated to a lot more from inside the SnowDancer den. We learn more about how the Pack functions and what makes the wolves tick.  Ms. Singh also writes a handful of scenes in the POV of the Snowdancer Alpha, Hawke, and since we experience “life in his head,” we learn who he is thinking about *wink*.
Drew just melted my heart and I fell in love with Drew and Indigo as a couple.  Drew’s emotional highs and lows, his playfulness and desire, warmed my heart and made this story such a good one to read.  This is an excellent romance and I love just adore the Psy-Changeling series!

My Rating:
Loved it - enthusiastically recommend (A)

Sunday Snippets #31

Sneak Peek from Lie With Me by Stephanie Tyler
Release Date: October 26, 2010
**NOTE: this except comes from an uncorrected galley copy of the book**
The monitor flickered in warning and she shut the laptop down and closed the lid. Suddenly, with the light gone, the storm turned from her ally to her enemy, as every sound became someone scratching at the door to get in.
She almost called for Cam, then heard the running water and realized he was showering.
Instead, she reached for her BlackBerry and noted that she had a few bars of service. Spotty, but enough, and so she quickly dialed her father’s number, and got his voice mail message. Again. “Hey, it’s me. I just wanted to let you know that Cameron Moore is here—he told me you sent him. Can you please call me, though. I need to speak to—”
Dead air. Well, at least hopefully the message had gotten through.
Cameron Moore is here. And he seems to get me.

Lighting a lantern, she walked along the hallway in the suddenly too dark townhouse until she reached the bathroom.
He’d left the door open. With his own lantern on the countertop, she could look at the half-steamed mirror and see him through the clear-glass shower door.
She wanted to look away but couldn’t. Soap slid between his shoulder blades, over the ridge of his lower back, coursing down thighs, which were solid ridges of muscles, as were his calves, and his feet . . . yes, they were large.
Stupid wives’ tale, she told herself, even as he turned around—and no, this was definitely not an old wives’ tale. It was only then she realized he could see her watching him if he turned his face toward the mirror. And still she didn’t move, running her gaze up his body toward his face when he turned the water off.

She moved to leave the doorway and her ankle caught on the doorjamb and twisted—she cried out and went down hard.
Cam was by her side in seconds, still dripping wet, towel around his waist. “You okay?”
He’d shaved his face clean, making his blue eyes stand out in stark relief, his chiseled cheekbones striking. His hair was wet, tied back, and he was seriously, devastatingly handsome.
Her face flushed hot. If he knew she’d been spying, he didn’t say . . . but something about the look in his eyes told her he guessed.
“I’m fine,” she insisted, and then, in the next breath, she corrected herself. “No, I’m not fine. I haven’t been fine for a long time.”
He remained on his knees, next to her, listening.
“But here with you, I feel like I can be fine. I want to be fine.” She reached up tentatively, slid her hands over his shoulders, feeling the slick, damp skin that was hot under her fingers.
“Sky . . .” His tone held a warning, letting her know she was about to push things too far with her soft touch, but she couldn’t stop now. Wanted to play with fire.

She trailed her hands down his chest, stopping midway, tracing the cuts on his abs with a finger.
When she looked up at him, he nearly lost it. He’d been hard from the second he’d caught her looking at him, but now, watching her studying his body . . . wanting him, his blood surged.
“We can’t do this,” he heard himself say—the voice of reason.
“I want you, Cam. Please, don’t turn me down.”

Review: Lie With Me

Lie With Me
Release Date: October 26, 2010
Publisher: Dell Books
Shadow Force Series Book #1
ISBN: #978-0440245964
Genre: Military/Suspense Romance
Format(s): paperback, e-book
I received an e-ARC copy of this book from the author for the purposes of an honest review.
From the author’s website:

Forced together by fate, bound together by desire.

Framed for a double murder, Delta Force operative Cameron Moore is given a new lease on life by the CIA—provided he pays them back by doing their black ops dirty work. Now Cam is ready to renegotiate their deal, and he thinks he’s found the perfect bargaining chip: Skylar Slavin, bestselling author of espionage thrillers and the daughter of the CIA man who saved him from a prison sentence.

Skylar has been living in anonymity, never suspecting that someone so dangerous—and so desirable—would plunge her into a world as treacherous as one of her spy novels. But how can Cam go through with his plan to kidnap Skylar when just the sight of her sets off an explosive attraction he’s never experienced before? And when Skylar falls prey to an even more perilous threat, this special ops soldier must call upon all his combat skills to protect the one person who can help him win his freedom—and the only woman he’s ever loved.
What I’m talking about:
Lie With Me is an exciting adventure that remindeds me of one of my favorite TV shows, Alias.  It is filled with several complex characters, all with unknown criss-crossing histories.  The key players include Cameron and Sky, our primary couple, Dylan - a spy and Cam’s best/only friend, Riley - a fellow “spy for hire” and romantic interest for Dylan,  and Gabriel... a CIA agent that uses Cam to run black op missions, who also happens to be Skylar’s father.
The story opens with an attempt on Cam’s life, one that comes from Gabriel’s men.  Tired of working for Gabe, Cam decides to use Skylar as leverage to break free once and all from Gabe’s long-reaching grasp. But when Cam meets up with Skylar, and finds out her life is in danger from unknown assailants, his mission quickly turns from kidnapper to protector. Cam finds an almost instant connection with Skylar and cannot stop himself from getting involved.
I was somewhat confused in the beginning of the book because of the numerous (and necessary) flashbacks and quick changing scenes. But as I read and learned more, I began to understand and appreciate it all.  Since this is the beginning of a new series, I understand the need for proper world-building, so there will be an adjustment period - learning the author’s methods of revealing the cast/plot, etc...  AND I do have to note that I read a poorly formatted electronic galley - completely my fault.  The copy got messed up when I converted the PDF to MOBI for my Kindle and I didn’t realize that until I was almost done with the book... I think that this played a big part in my confusion.
Sky and Cam are a good match. They have different histories, but they are both lost souls - for different reasons, and they connect in an almost spiritual manner. They discover hope and a joy for life within each other’s arms. I did get a bit annoyed with Skylar’s doubts about her physical appearance (thank goodness is wasn’t a big part of her character) and her need to blame herself for all that was going on. But she held her own, and those insignificant characteristics didn’t drag down the story.  And Cam... he is an alpha male that I can appreciate! He is a man with a sorted and complex past. He is flawed, but works through his own mess to find happiness.  Gabe best summed up Cam when he thought:
His daughter was with a man who hated Gabriel’s guts. But Cameron Morre was nothing like him. Cam was honorable.
I adored the “side story” of Dylan and Riley. She is one tough cookie and kick-ass heroine in her own right. Her backstory was the most touching for me, and I was pulling for her every step of the way. I hope we’ll hear more about this wonderful character, and I look forward to finding out how she will find permanent inner-peace.
I have to quickly mention Gabe... he’s not a nice man. He uses people to his achieve his own “greater good,” but loves his daughter to a fault.  I enjoyed his ambiguity and complex nature. One can only hope that we will see Gabe get a new lease on life and maybe find love...
All-in-all, Lie With Me is an thrilling, romantic journey.  I look forward to continuing the story with Ms. Tyler’s second Shadow Force book, Promises In The Dark.
My Rating:
Liked it a lot - recommend (B+)

Readers: I’ll be showcasing a Sneak Peek of Lie With Me for this week’s Sunday Snippets feature. Be sure to check back on Sunday!!

Author Interview - Stephanie Tyler

Today I have the honor of bringing to you author Stephanie Tyler.  Stephanie is a New York Times bestselling author that writes what she loves to read - romantic suspense with military heroes - for Bantam Dell. She lives in New York with her husband, her daughter, her son, and her Weimaraner. She also writes paranormal erotic romance for Bantam Dell with Larissa Ione under the pen-name Sydney Croft. Stephanie tells me that she has the best job in the world! Please help me welcome Stephanie to That’s What I’m Talking About
Twimom: Steph, welcome and thank you for stopping by.
Stephanie:  Thank you for inviting me here today.
Twimom: How long have you been writing and how did you start? What are your inspirations?
Stephanie:  I feel like I’ve been writing forever, but I didn’t start writing romance until my daughter was born with some serious medical problems, so about nine years ago.  At the time, I was teaching, and it didn’t look like I’d be going back, as she needed full-time care.  Writing was a way for me to escape from the stress while still being with her – and I’d started reading romance novels while she was in the hospital, as my usual fare of straight thrillers and literary fiction was just a little too real at the time.  I needed happy endings.  And as I read, I thought, I can do this…I want to write this.  And everything fell into place.  What I’d been writing before – poetry, short stories, etc., were just not as satisfying as writing what I’m writing now.  So it’s definitely more than a little bittersweet for me – I don’t think I would be writing as my full-time job if Lily hadn’t been sick and didn’t have continuing special needs.
My inspirations come from anywhere and everywhere – people, reading, TV, etc.  My characters are always sort of arriving in my head.  I keep a notebook with me at all times and I’m usually writing at least three books at once.
Twimom: Goodness, I hope you daughter is healthy, but it’s a wonderful story-thank you for sharing.  I notice that your stories involve mostly strong, type-A military men... Were you in the military? A family history? What is the attraction? (other than the obvious: Hot, sexy men!)
Stephanie: My grandfather was in the Navy and I have a lot of friends who’ve served.  There’s just something so sexy about a military hero – a man who’s trained to serve and protect, as you mention.  Plus, I just really like alpha men – being a strong woman myself, I need that strong man.  And the thing is too, like I mentioned above, my characters come to me pretty well formed – and these military men character kept tugging, whispering in my ear...they come to me military heroes and I just tell their stories.
Twimom: Excellent. I have to admit, I have my own ex-military man of my own! *grins* Can you tell my readers about your plans for your upcoming Shadow Force series? (Book #1: Lie With Me comes out October 26 and Book #2: Promises in the Dark comes out in November 2010)
Stephanie: Right now, I just finished the third book – IN THE AIR TONIGHT (Aug 2011) and started the fourth in the series (NIGHT MOVES / OCT 2011), and I have plans for at least two more…still military romantic suspense, still a group of hot alpha guys ready and willing to save the world – and the women who love them.  These men walk a fine line between right and wrong in order to do so, and as they begin to work on their own, they have to monitor that for themselves…how far they’re willing to go for the greater good.
Twimom: Sounds wonderful! I have to admit that after reading the first book in the series, I love that “fine line between right and wrong.”  It makes your heroes more complex and exciting! Do you write any other genres?
Stephanie: I co-write paranormal erotic romance with Larissa Ione as Sydney Croft.  And I guess at least one of my Blazes would be considered straight contemporary romance (Coming Undone.)
Twimom: My blog followers know that I am a HUGE fan of your alter-ego, Sydney Croft's ACRO series... Can you give me a hint about the upcoming (and final - BOO HOO) story, Taken by Fire?
Stephanie: The book was so much fun to write because we brought in everyone – so you’ll get to see all the ACRO characters you know and love, and get updates on them! And I really think it’s a satisfying conclusion to the ACRO series.  We’d always planned for a six-book arc, so we’ve been working toward this ending since book 1.  All I can say is that Stryker is the hero…and his heroine is Phoebe.  And Melanie.  (No, you can’t bribe me with chocolate…well, wait, what kind?)
Twimom:  *Jumps for joy* I’m already salivating - especially after seeing the cover! Can you tell me a little more about your other books?
Stephanie:  My Hold trilogy features three brothers who are Navy SEALs.  My Blaze trilogy features a SEAL team as well – they were some of my first published books and I learned so much from writing for Blaze.  I get lots of letters asking if I’m going to continue that series.  I have an open invitation to do so, but finding the time is the problem – but, in publishing, that’s a good problem to have.  You always want to have deadlines, because that means you have work!
Twimom: I always like to ask authors about their reading habits... What is the best book you've read in 2010? What types of books do you enjoy reading?
Stephanie:   I’ll start with the types of books I enjoy – romance for sure, mostly romantic suspense, erotica and some paranormal (I just started Gena Showalter’s Lord of the Underworld series and I’m really liking) I also read a lot of biographies and non-fiction.  I go back to some literary fiction every now and again as well, and poetry, too.

For the best book I’ve read in 2010 - that’s a tough one.  OMG – how can I answer that?!  Can I tell you the book I recommend to everyone instead?  It’s called The Dirt – the true story behind Motley Crue, as told by the band themselves.  You don’t have to like the group per se – but this is such an amazing look at a rock band – if you love music, this is the best book on what goes on behind the scenes in rock bands – hands down.  It’s funny and tragic and so truthful – give it a try.  Because, hi, rock stars and tattoos – that’s right up there with the military man hotness.
Twimom: Oh, that Motley Crue book does sound interesting. And I love that you are trying out Gena’s Lords of the Underworld. I adore that series (and dedicated a whole week to it earlier this year!) What upcoming release are you most excited to read?
Stephanie: Probably JR Ward’s newest – I love her writing!
Twimom: Steph, once again thank you so much for taking the time to tell my readers a little bit about yourself and your writing. It was wonderful chatting with you.
Stephanie: Thanks, Jen. It was fun being here.
Readers: You can find Stephanie on line at
Her Blog
