I have been waiting for the release of Body of Sin since finishing the third book in Ms. Silver’s Otherkins series back in September 2010. That book, Sins of the Flesh (review HERE, purchase information, Sins of the Flesh (Hqn)
) left readers with a bit of shocking news. The first three books of the Otherkin Series together tell the tale of three sons of the Egyptian underworld god, Sutekh and their quest to discover the identity of their youngest brother’s, Lokan, murder. If you haven’t read the first three books in the series, you may want to stop reading here, because this review contains SPOILERS from the first three books.

The first three books of the Otherkin Series together tell the tale of three sons of the Egyptian underworld god, Sutekh and their quest to discover the identity of their youngest brother’s, Lokan, murder. If you haven’t read the first three books in the series, you may want to stop reading here, because this review contains SPOILERS from the first three books.Okay, so, Body of Sin starts up immediately after the conclusion of the third book when we discovered that Lokan’s murder was none other than his own father, Sutekh. This left the underworld in a bit of an uproar. Lokan’s body and soul were separated, leaving him to wander the null zone, body-less. However, Lokan’s brothers were able to send his body back to him at the conclusion of the last book. In Body of Sin, Lokan continues to wander, trying to find a way back Topworld, to his daughter, Dana and the his baby’s mama, Bryn. Meanwhile, Bryn fears for Dana and her own life with rumors circulating that Sutekh will come for Dana next.
Body of Sin wrapped up Lokan’s murder and all of the associated outfall quite nicely. I enjoyed the story and felt Ms. Silver gave Lokan all he deserved.
I delighted in how the beginning of the story alternated POV from present day Lokan, present day Bryn, and past Lokan/Bryn. The flashback POVs gives the reader great insight into the development of Lokan and Bryn’s love over the course of seven years while caring for their daughter. Each present day section left on a mini-cliffhanger and kept me reading to the next section to find out what was going to happen.
Once Lokan and Bryn are united in the underworld, the story took on a different tone - no more flashbacks, just the need to survive the tests presented to the couple as the made their way out of the underworld. Their romance was sweet, but I felt that Bryn’s efforts to be honest with Lokan while still hiding the truth of her bargain was overplayed a bit too often.
However, when all was said and done, I was completely satisfied with the conclusion. Although there were hints throughout the book as the to outcome (and I guessed pretty much all of it), there were still some nice surprises. I hope that Ms. Silver isn’t finished with this series, because I think that Bryn’s three mysterious brothers, Boone, Jack and Cahn deserve stories of their own!
This is an enjoyable take on the Egyptian mythology, filled with adventure and romance. I highly recommend starting with the first book, Sins of the Heart (review HERE, purchase information: Sins of the Heart (Hqn)

She tried to edge sideways, but he gad a solid grip on the sheet, limiting her choices. Either she stayed exactly where she was and kept her cover, or she dropped it and bolted.
He was too close, too tempting, and she was wearing a film of three-day sweat. That was pretty much the only thing that kept her from dropping the sheet and grabbing him.
The pounding of her pulse marked the seconds.
She held his gaze, aching, wanting, knowing on every level that letting him get close to her was a mistake.
Don’t touch him. Don’t ache for him. For the love of Aset, don’t have sex with him.
But that was the thing about common sense. It was only worth something if she chose to heed it.
And right now, the way he was looking at her, like he was starving and she was a nice, rare steak, made her want to bury her common sense six feet under.
She took a single step toward him.
His expression shifted, hardened, like that of a predator catching a scent.
Dropping the sheet, she bolted.

What I’m talking about:
The three books of the Otherkin Trilogy together tell the tale of the sons of the Egyptian underworld god, Sutekh and their quest to discover the identity of their youngest brother’s murder. There are clues and hints that help are woven into each story (especially in the first book) that are necessary if you are like me and want to figure out “whodunit” before the author tells you.
The third book, Sins of the Flesh, picks up after the second story finishes. The focus of this book is the third son, Malthus Krayl. He watched his two older brothers fall head over heels for women (in the first two books) and he knows that will not happen to him. He picks up the quest to discover more about his brother, Lokan’s killer by following clues on the “topside” (human realm). While staking out his latest lead, he sees a mysterious woman and is drawn in - wanting to know more about her and why she is also after his lead.
Calliope is a solider for the Asetian Guard, sworn enemy of Sutehk, and her hatred of Sutehk’s sons is also personal. When she first meets Mal, she is vicious and I LOVED it. There is no “love at first sight.” An attraction, yes, but she is hard-core and will not let him stop her from following her orders. She is loyal to the Guard and stays focused beyond all measures as the sexy Mal puts the moves on her.
Right from the start I enjoyed the chemistry between Mal and Calliope. She is fierce and strong. She does what she has to in order to survive, and is always adjusting to the situation. She stays true to herself, even as she falls for her life-long enemy. She doesn’t just see him, swoon, and it’s over. She analyzes her sentiments, studies her loyalties, is mortified, but eventually opens up to the possibilities for true happiness.
Mal is an adrenaline junkie. He loves a challenge. And what I love that he first assumes he is attracted to Calliope because she is a challenge. In fact his response to her saying no?
He rarely encountered a woman who said "no," and when he did, he simply turned to the one beside her who invariably said "yes."
But then Mal digs deeper and scrutinizes his feelings, just as Calliope does. And this is what makes their relationship work... we are privy to their inner-most fears and desires. Ms. Silver does an excellent job portraying a couple who has to “work it out” in order to achieve happiness.
Due to the fascinating and continuing storyline surrounding the murder of Lokan Krayl, these books read more like an urban fantasy at times. Different than a “story arc” common in paranormal romance series, these books leave you with a bit of a cliff hanger each time. Even in the end, after the discovery of the identity of the murderer, more questions remain unanswered. The heros are left in somewhat of a perilous situation and there will be major ramifications from the death of Lokan and the discovery of his killer. And even though Mal and Calliope professed their love for each other, they didn’t get the “epilogue” of happiness. There isn’t a “happily ever after” written (yet). I wanted one more chapter giving me the HEA and letting Mal and Calliope enjoy their new love.
This story is my favorite of the three books. The action is faster and the answers come more quickly. The sparks that finally do ignite between Malthus and Calliope sizzle! And even though I have a TON of questions (that I am emailing to Ms. Silver), I found the answers that were given satisfying. But due to the open ending and some other “why did...” questions I have, I didn’t get a sense of closure. Thank GOD that Ms. Silver already has Book 4 underway (Body of Sin, June 2011). This is a fun and exciting new series, but be prepared to deal with unanswered questions along the way!

What I’m talking about:
This is the second book in Ms. Silver’s Otherkin Trilogy and it picks up immediately where Book #1, Sins of the Heart, finishes. This book centers on Alastor Krayl, the second son of Underworld Egyptian god, Sutekh. The story focuses on Alastor’s committed drive to discover who murdered his youngest brother, in hopes of reanimating his lost soul. This mystery started in Book #1 and does not finish here.
Alastor meets Naphre quite by accident, but is immediately drawn to her. He survives in the harsh Underworld by letting out no emotions, so when Naphre stirs up feelings within him, he’s not sure how to react. As he follows the clues to discover the truth about his brother, he learns that Naphre is more involved that he could imagine. This feeds his obsession for Naphre and he cannot figure out why he is so attracted to her. But as he grows closer to her, he keeps deep (and important) secrets from her - which in the end could destroy any chance of a relationship.
Most of the story is spent on Alastor and Naphre and their mutual desires. We learn very little about the overall “whodunit” storyline, which frustrated me at times. The story is filled with wonderful details and descriptions. I enjoyed following their love story, which is touching (although at times I wanted to strangle Alastor for keeping so many secrets!) The mythology and players are fascinating. But I felt that there was too much time spent on all of the descriptive details and not enough on the action. I want to know what’s going on!! Of course, that is what the third book is for, but I felt a bit disappointed that we didn’t learn more about the evil players and what their ultimate goals are.
I recommend reading the first book in the series prior to this one. Although they are two different books, they are of one tale. I look forward to reading the final chapter of this story with the upcoming release of Sins of the Flesh (Sept. 28, 2010). I have high expectations for a wild conclusion.

What I’m talking about:
Roxy Tam led a pretty rough life and at 19-years old, it was soon going to be over. Kidnapped by a serial rapist and killer, she had no hope for escape. That is until Dagan Krayle found her. She watched in terror as he reached into the chests of her captors, removed their hearts and an oily-like, gray substance known as the “darksoul.” He then let her go. Fast forward 11 years and Roxy is now deeply involved with the supernatural and hopes some day to find Dagan again so that she can make him pay for the horrors he brought into her life that fate-filled night. Or, so she tells herself, even though she can’t stop dreaming about Dagan in the most intimate of ways.
Welcome to the exciting world of Egyptian mythology! This story is deeply routed in a complex mythology based on ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses, and many other existing underworld stories. It took some time for me to get a clear grasp on each of the characters and their roles in this elaborate world, but figuring it all out was half of the fun.
In addition to the wonderfully intricate mythology, Ms. Silver spins a tale of mystery and suspense. I found myself biting my nails as Roxy and Dagan slowly unraveled the mystery of who or what killed Dagan’s brother (which by the way, is supposed to be impossible). Both characters are unsure who to trust, including each other, and with so much going on, I wasn’t sure who to believe, either!
And let me quickly talk about Dagan and Roxy... they are one hot ticket! Even though there was an instant attraction, they each went their separate ways. Never knowing what became of the other, neither could forget that night, which lead to 11 long years of smexy dreaming. So after all that time, the pent up frustration and anger leads to an amazingly hot first kiss and... some other sizzling things as well!
The downside of this story with so many moving parts is that there were many questions left unanswered and situations unresolved, whether by design or accident, I’m not sure. I say this because the overall story by no means ends with Sins of the Heart. While Dagan and Roxy get their Happily Ever After (HEA), the mystery of whodunit is left wide open, with only a few pieces of the puzzle in place. This was a bit frustrating for me, because I am not a fan of cliff-hanger type endings. However, I was comforted in the fact that Roxy and Dagan did get their HEA and will face the unknown together.
Ms. Silver does a superb job of describing each little detail, from the way Dagan eats his lollipops, to the color of Roxy’s eyes. I enjoyed all of the finer points, but did get a bit run down by the constant reminders of certain facts (like the soul reapers don’t dream or that Roxy and Dagan are supposed to be enemies).
Sins of the Heart has a great mix of action, mystery and romance, and in spite of the open ending, it was an enjoyable read, with complex mythology and whodunit tale. I look forward to the next installment of this series, Sins of the Soul, due out on August 31, 2010.
