Review: Demons Like It Hot

Demons Like It Hot
Author: Sidney Ayers
Release Date: Dec. 6, 2011
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Demons Unleashed #2
ISBN: #978-1402251771
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): Paperback (448 pgs), e-book
Book Source: Publisher

About the book:
A RECIPE FOR DISASTER...
Matthias Ambrose is a demon mercenary who never took sides, until his attraction to the spunky caterer he was hired to kidnap leads him to almost botch a job for the first time in eight hundred years. Now he must protect her from his former clients, but even an ice-cold demon like Matthias struggles to resist her fiery charms.
OR THE PERFECT RECIPE FOR PASSION...
Completely engrossed with planning menus and prepping recipes for her shot at cooking show fame, star caterer Serah SanGermano refuses to believe she's on a fast track to Hades.
But how's she supposed to stick to the kitchen if she can't stand the heat of her gorgeous demonic bodyguard?
As a diabolical plot to destroy humanity unfolds and all hell breaks loose in Serah's kitchen, she and Matthias find themselves knee-deep in demons and up to their eyeballs in love...

What B is talking about:
What self-respecting chef with a demon problem wouldn’t jump at the chance to be on a popular televised cooking show if it meant saving her catering business from financial ruin? Serah SanGermano has gotten used to the idea of demons (both good and bad), imps, the existence of succubae, and angels, and she’s fine with it, really, if only they’d stop trying to sabotage her catering jobs and blow up her kitchen.
Some mistakes can never be undone, and while Matthias Ambrose has learned that lesson well over the long centuries of his existence, his latest mistake could mean the end of the world. Literally. Once a target he was paid by the Infernati to kidnap, Serah has now become his mission, and keeping her safe is his one chance to save all of humanity.
Serah was the heroine’s best friend in Demons Prefer Blondes (review HERE), the first novel in the Demons Unleashed series, and I was glad to see her get her own book this time around. As the more reserved of the pair, she is reluctant to accept her destiny, but proves that she is truly heroic at heart. The entire novel is filled with a quirky, fun mix of contradictions. Serah doesn’t have faith in herself, but has no doubts as to her friend (and Paladin) Kalli’s ability to return her demonically trashed kitchen to sparkling cleanliness within moments.
Matthias is an alpha male in need of redemption. Rather than coming across as a tired device, however, Ayers seems to gleefully heap all manner of discomforts on our hero, giving his role in the story an unexpectedly sweet turn, and making it easier than it otherwise might have been to hope for his eternal happiness alongside Serah’s.
Serah and Matthias are convinced they are completely wrong for each other, but they are destined to be together anyway. This sort of planned HEA could have played out too predictably, thereby robbing the story of some of it’s hottest and best moments, but Ayers makes it a lot of fun to watch their collision into each other. The tension between the two is both charming and sexy, and is perhaps even more erotic than when they are giving into temptation.
One of my favorite things about Demons Like It Hot is that Ayers gives her heroine a healthy sense of humor and plenty enough snark to drive her man insane. Matthias has a slightly easier time of it than Rafe, from the first book in this series, but he’s still left grinding his teeth a good bit, which I found fairly delightful. It would be difficult to explain why, exactly, that is so much fun, so it’s much better to just read along and enjoy.

Review: Demons Prefer Blondes

Demons Prefer Blondes
Author: Sidney Ayers
Release Date: June 7, 2011
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Demons Unleashed Series #1
ISBN #: 978-1402251740
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): Paperback (416 pgs), ebook

I received a copy of this book from the PUBLISHER for the purposes of an honest review.
From the author’s website:
A BAD DAY FOR A DEMON...
Rafe Deleon is a senior demon and he resents like hell his assignment to Earth to retrieve the Chest of the Damned before it ends up in the wrong hands. But then he meets beautiful, intriguing succubus, Lucy Gregory, and she’s just unleashed a whole load of trouble...
REALLY SUCKS FOR A SUCCUBUS...
Lucy’s chic suburban salon has suddenly become the Underworld’s center of mass chaos and destruction. The only good in a day going rapidly down the tubes is the arrival of a gorgeous demon who’s adamant he can help her...
But Lucy has quite a few deeply unpleasant--not to mention deadly and hateful--surprises ahead of her. Surely there’s never been a worse time to tryout a new boyfriend...
What B is talking about:
Lucia Gregory is doing just fine, thank you. She’s got a steady clientele at her salon, a quirky, but devoted, assortment of friends, and has been successfully boyfriend-free for five years and counting. While she’s not complaining about the latter, her mother certainly is.
Rafael Deleon is a centuries-old member of the Paladin, a select group of demons allied with and blessed by angels. His sister has been captured by the Infernati (bad demons), the chest she was sworn to guard has been sent to Earth, and he’s been tasked with guarding a succubus who’s just come into her powers. Could things get any worse?
Of course they can! Ayers’ website boasts “Sinfully Snarky Paranormal Romance” and she’s not kidding. Demons Prefer Blondes firmly embraces the idea that while things might seem to be as bad as they could possibly be, they are likely to become much worse before all is said and done. Good thing her characters have a sense of humor—or, most of them do. Ayers keeps the funny stuff going throughout the novel, two of the best jokes being an amusing bit of alliteration concerning the toes of one of Lucy’s customers and the regrettable exposure of some gravitationally-challenged Santas.
Lucy doesn’t have a lot of moments of self-doubt, which should be a great thing for a heroine. Occasionally, however, it seems that a little more reliance on her friends would have saved her a lot of pain and frustration. Lucy does figure out that all of her loved ones are crucial to the battle she’s destined to fight eventually, and she’s able to not only survive, but also win the day because of it.
There’s only one sex scene in the novel, but there are lots of other sexy ones. It takes a while for them to finally cave in to their desire for one another, and several stops and starts within the scene itself, but once they do, Lucy and Rafe make it a good one. There are several scenes where Ayers just lets them react to one another that are electric and sweet at the same time.
Demons Prefer Blondes has a lot to offer, its most noteworthy charms resulting from the easy rapport and affection between Lucy and her friends, the humor Ayers liberally casts throughout the novel, and the erotic tension that’s present when Rafael is hiding behind his sworn duty instead admitting the truth of his own heart. It’s full of lively characters, some likable, some most definitely not, but nearly all memorable. I’m not sure where Ayers is planning to go with the next novel in the series, but I’m interested to find out.

Author Interview & Giveaway - Sidney Ayers

Today I have the honor of bringing to you author Sidney Ayers. Sidney loves infusing her stories with humor. She writes a plethora of genres, ranging from historical, to paranormal, to contemporary.
A native of Michigan, Sidney still lives in the same town she grew up in. No matter how hard she tries, she just can’t seem to get away. Michigan is in her blood. Right now, Sidney is currently working on the 2nd book in the Demons Unleashed series of humorous paranormal romances. Please help me welcome Sidney toThat’s What I’m Talking About
Twimom: Sidney, welcome and thank you for stopping by.
Sidney: You’re welcome. And a Big thank you for inviting me.
Twimom: First of all... Michigan?! I am also a native, although I haven’t lived there since 1994, I still travel back yearly.  I grew up *holds up hand and points to spot* here.  (For those non-natives, we Michiganders can show where we live by using our hand as a map.) I have to ask... Wolverine or Spartan?
Sidney: Go GVSU Lakers! Sorry, I don’t want to offend anyone. Hee hee hee.
Twimom: Well, as long as you didn’t say OSU, we are good! Okay, enough about Michigan... can you tell my readers how long you’ve been writing and what sparked your interest in the paranormal genre?
Sidney: I love stories like Bram Stoker’s Dracula and love shows like Supernatural and other shows with a paranormal elements. I’ve  always enjoyed reading paranormal romances as well. However, I noticed a lot of books in the genre took a rather dark turn. I really discovered my penchant for humor when I entered a round robin story contest that Avon sponsored back in 2006. I wrote a couple of off-the-wall parodies that got rather good feedback.  Little did they know that their contest would unleash a monster.
Twimom: Or rather a demon! (hehe) Demons Prefer Blondes is the first book in your new Demons Unleashed series. Can you tell us a little about this new world you’ve created and your plans for the series?
Sidney: The series takes place in Connolly Park, a fictional suburb in a fictional metropolitan area in the southwestern part of Michigan. If you’re familiar with the area, you’ll be able to figure out what town it is loosely based on. As the series progresses, this town will become an even bigger hotbed of demonic activity.
Twimom: I look forward to seeing where the series leads! I see on your website that you also write under the name Arianna Skye. Can you tell us about the other books you’ve written? What is your favorite genre to pen?
Sidney: As Arianna Skye, I’ve written one fantasy erotic romance, Wings of Desire, published by Eternal Press last February. It’s a little steamier than Demons Prefer Blondes, but it’s just as snarky. My favorite genres are paranormal, fantasy and historical romance. Eventually, I’ll find a way to combine them.
Twimom: Wow - now there is a book I’d love to read... I love all those genres! I always like to ask authors about their reading habits... What types of books do you enjoy reading? What was your favorite read during 2010 or so far in 2011?
Sidney: I love reading historicals. I’m about ready to dig into Unveiled by Courtney Milan. I also enjoy paranormals, of course,  but I tend to avoid reading the same genre while writing.
Twimom: What upcoming 2011 releases are you most excited to read?
Sidney: I seriously have to list them all? I’m still hankering to catch up on JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood novels. My TBR list is a mile high right now.
Twimom: Oh those Black Dagger Brothers *sigh* Yes... that is a great place to start playing catch up!
Sidney, once again thank you so much for taking the time to tell my readers a little bit about yourself and your writing. It was wonderful chatting with you.
Sidney: Thanks again! I had a great time!
