Spoilers Beware!

I normally like to run a spoiler-free blog here at THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. We try to tell you what we think about a book without giving away key plot points.

Recently I read a book that I enjoyed, but something happened near the end that bothered me. I want to talk about it, but it would be giving away MAJOR spoilers if I did.

I saw over at SMEXYBOOKS a cool little plug in that allowed Mandi to write about key plot points that each reader could choose to read or not read. I loved it! After digging around on google I found something similar. I wanted to try it out and see if it works. Can you please let me know what you think?

If you were reading a review on my site and I wanted to have a spoiler text I would do like so...

So did it work for you? I need feedback before I use it live! I would love your feedback. ALSO What do you think about spoilers in reviews? Do you read them? Do you like them? Do you avoid reviews with spoilers?

I found this code for a spoiler button HERE.

ETA: So we discovered that this does NOT work with RSS feeds - if I put a big warning at the top of the post *BEWARE* if you are reading from an RSS feed you will see spoilers - would that be sufficient? Or would you get upset if you were reading from a feed reader?

Also - what about those who subscribe via email... what do you see?

Review: Dreaming of the Wolf

Dreaming Of The Wolf
Author: Terry Spear
Release Date: Dec. 1, 2011
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Werewolf Series Book 8
ISBN: #978-1402245558
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): Paperback (384 pgs), e-book
Book Source: Publisher

About the book:
A fierce hunter…
Alicia Greiston is a no-nonsense bounty hunter determined to bring a ring of mobsters to justice. Her dogged pursuit of the crime family has forced her to avoid relationships—any man would only become a target for retribution. Luckily, Jake Silver is more than a man, and his instincts are telling him to stop at nothing to protect her.
An animal passion…
However, the mob isn’t entirely human either, and soon Alicia must flee for her life. When Alicia and Jake’s passion begins to spill over into their dreams, Jake learns he will have to do more than defend her—he’ll have to show his mate the way of the wolf.

What B is talking about:
Driven by the recent loss of her mother, Alicia Greiston is determined to bring the men responsible for her murder to justice. No sacrifice is too high a price to see them behind bars, even if the cost is her own life. Unprepared to meet a man she was certain could never exist in her wildest dreams, the intervention by the sexy stranger turns her world inside out.
Jake Silver thinks his quick fascination with the pretty woman he spies outside an upscale restaurant is purely sexual. He’s a werewolf, after all, and the human he’s determined to get to know a little better could be just what he needs—at least for the night. But, when he’s compelled to do anything to keep her safe, even if it means defying his own pack, he realizes she’s much more than what she seems.
Alicia and Jake are a great match for each other from the beginning, and due to both her resignation to her fate, and the urgings of his wolf, they fall into one another early on in Dreaming of the Wolf. Jake is one of the more perfect males I’ve pleasure of reading yet, having a keen enough intelligence to balance his alpha-male impulsiveness, as well as keeping his affections sweet and comfortably easy throughout. The mutual need he and Alicia share is tender, yet incredibly sexy as well.
Spear takes her time letting us get to know Alicia and Jake in the beginning of the story, but once Alicia is turned, Dreaming of the Wolf really starts to take off. The random pieces and connections begin falling into place with increasing speed, and ratcheting up the tension for the remainder of the novel.
Dreaming of the Wolf proves, yet again, that Spear is very capable of weaving the many elements of a paranormal romance series into her tales, while ensuring each novel is strong enough to stand successfully on its own. Spear’s wolves are welcoming, devoted, clever, and loving. The chemistry between Alicia and Jake shines from the beginning, and doesn’t fade as their story progresses. Though a happy ending is a guarantee, getting there is a happy, sexy adventure that will likely appeal to all fans of werewolves, and the feisty mates that win their hearts.

Review: Mountain Claiming

Mountain Claiming
Author: L. C. Dean
Release Date: July 2011
Publisher: Decadent Publishing
1 Night Stand Series
Genre: GLBT, M/M Romance
Format(s): e-book
Book Source: Publisher/Author

About the book:
When Madame Eve and her 1 Night Stand offer a chance at escape, Daniel Long drops the yoke of submission and runs to the Castillo Resort, Grand Turk and the hope of a future without repression. Everything on the island steals his breath including the gorgeous hotel owner, Jagger Castillo. Daniel quickly discovers he’s out of bondage and way out of his comfort zone.

Jagger isn’t expecting the gift Madame Eve drops on his doorstep, but once he realizes how precious the present is, he won’t let go without a fight. The only question is, can he claim Daniel before the night slips away and cheats them both of paradise.

What B is talking about:
Shy, haunted Daniel Long knows he doesn’t fit in among the happy guests at the Castillo Resort, but the lure of escape and possibility offered by the mysterious Madame Eve was just too hard to resist. His one hope is that a 1 Night Stand may be the very thing he needs to begin a whole new life.
Jagger Castillo loves his life in a resort by the sea, but has given up on the idea of his own happily ever after. One look at Daniel, though, and his opinion is decidedly altered. If only he could break through the wall the beautiful mountain of a man is hiding behind and discover the desires he keeps so well hidden.
Mountain Claiming is a quick, easy-to-read short, with a big story to tell. Dean packs a lot of emotional tension in a relatively few pages. Daniel is easy to fall in love with and he and Jagger are wonderful together as they try to find their way to true happiness.
The idea of having only one night to forever change the course of a life and find true love guarantees that there’s little time for potentially burdensome details, but in this case I’d have happily read any additional particulars Dean might have offered. There seems to be so much more to these two characters than can be explored in such a short tale, but, as Jagger so neatly puts it, “Dusk to dawn is not much time for a fresh start, so quit worrying about me and get on with discovering what gives you joy.”
Dean has done a lot with Mountain Claiming, considering these stories are supposed to be quick, steamy reads. Aside from a nearly too tidy shift in personality for one of the main characters at the end of the story, this was a solid, fun read. On the whole, Mountain Claiming has a lot going for it. Both main characters are distinct in their personalities, there are serious themes which are treated with appropriate consideration, and I found myself hoping for a happy resolution from the very beginning. While I have not had the opportunity to read any other titles in the 1 Night Stand series, I very much enjoyed this one, and feel that Dean is definitely an author to watch in the GLBT Romance genre.

Enjoyed - strongly recommend (A-)

Review: Infinite Betrayal

Infinite Betrayal
Release Date: March 22, 2011
Publisher: Liquid Silver Books
The Infinity Series #1
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): e-book
Book Source: Author

About the book:
He would protect her with his life…
Mathias has been ordered to protect Mina Roarke at all costs while keeping her Father’s secrets concealed.  But from the moment he sees her, the hunger he’s desperately tried to bury, roars to life.  The beast within is awakened and wants only one thing…Mina.
But when his enemies target her life, Mina and Mathias become caught in a lethal game of revenge.   To save her, Mathias must not only expose the truth…but also what lies deep within him.

She was just looking for answers…
Mina had always been told she was special. In what way, she never fully understood until her life and everything she thought she knew and believed in was turned completely upside down.

After the unexpected death of her mother, Mina finds clues about her past that trigger more questions than answers. Her quest to find those answers thrusts Mina deep into the Black Forest of Germany and into the arms of a man who tests her control…in more ways than one.  She is wrenched from her own reality into a world filled with adrenaline-charged danger, blazing sexual heat, and the answers that have been hidden her entire life.
Mina alone holds the power to change her future but when she comes face to face with ultimate betrayal, can she still trust in the one man that has captured her heart?

What VampBard is talking about:
Infinite Betrayal is the first in what could be a powerhouse series by Gayle Donnelly and Robyn Mackenzie.  To say that I enjoyed this book would be an understatement.  I devoured it in a day.  The authors artistically crafted a world wherein they created a race to act as liaison between the human population and the natural world without humans being aware of their existence.  Me likey :)  Additionally, this race - the Coteri - are a strong, gentle presence.  Although, a faction - the Valta - are wreaking havoc in the human world, and the Coteri, through their King's leadership, are trying to squelch the chaos.
Where to begin... ah, yes... our hero, Mathias.  Strong, stubborn and driven to complete his mission.  Too bad he didn't factor in falling in love with Mina, the King's daughter.  Kinda complicates his position as a General in the Royal Guard a bit, huh?  Especially when the King doesn't know, and Mathias' is compelled to act on his desire to be with Mina prior to the end of his assignment.  The internal conflict Mathias endures is beautifully depicted, and focuses on his inner battle to do his job and follow his heart.  We get a decent description of Mathias near the beginning of the book when Mina sees him for the first time, and when she's describing him to her bestie, Chloe.  What's better than the physical description of Mathias is the way he interacts with Mina, from start to finish.  His protectiveness as well as the way he fights to retrieve her when she's been kidnapped is nothing less than spectacular characterization.
The perfect compliment to Mathias is our heroine, Mina.  Strong-willed, independent and taking control of her own life after facing the death of the only parent she's ever known, Mina learns exactly how 'special' she is through the course of the book.  Even while dealing with immense inner-conflict, similar to Mathias, Mina pulled-off the appearance of being confident and self-assured.  Her psyche was further exposed during her captivity with the baddie, Luca, and she brought to the forefront some of the strategies she used to ensure that her sanity was retained during that ordeal, as well as at other times during her life.  These coping strategies, as well as others Mina displayed, were excellent examples of strong traits that women world-wide need to embrace.  Kudos to the authors for ensuring that their heroine exemplified what so many women struggle to emulate.
Roderick.  We saw a lot of him in this book, and learned about his motives for laying low in Mina's life until this point.  He appears to be selfless, and appears to rule with confidence even when filled with self-doubt.  He's lost the love of his life, Mina's mom, Julia.  He's in mourning, and while he should be allowed time to grieve, he is not afforded that luxury.  My favorite scene involving Roderick, the King of the Coteri, also involved Mina.  She was in his office, and on the mantle were keepsakes from her childhood that her mother had sent.  As she took in how involved Roderick really was in her life, even if from afar, he simply sat in a chair taking it all in.  Taking in her reactions, taking in the way she moved, analyzed the items, and the way she communicated her emotions.  Well, that's how it appeared anyway!  He really did have the best interests of his daughter at heart when he distanced himself from their lives, all the while ensuring their safety and comfort through strategically placed protective measures and financial support.
There was one plot concern in the story.  Mathias took Mina to Munich (say that fast 5 times!) for a shopping expedition.  He told her prior to departure that she would be unable to meet with her father for a few days because he was tied up with business.  Later, Mina indicated that she couldn't wait to leave Munich so that she could meet her father.  I felt this was a plot-gap, and either needed further development or a bit more clarification for the reader.  I went back and re-read the entire section in question twice, to make sure I hasn't missed anything - flipped a page without reading it accidentally, etc.  It confused me as a reader.
Over-all, I really enjoyed Infinite Betrayal.  It has tidbits that reminded me of Nalini Singh's Psy/Changeling series (a favorite of mine), although I didn't feel as though the plot at all mimicked the other series.  The strong characterization, and the way the authors introduced the characters have set-up a great universe from which I hope to read several more installments in the future.

Enjoyed - strongly recommend (A-)

Quickie Review: The Body Thief

Body Thief
Author: C.J. Barry
Release Date: Nov. 1, 2011
Publisher: Berkley Trade
The Body #2
ISBN: #978-0425243312
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): Paperback (336 pgs), e-book
Book Source: Publisher

About the book:
Shapeshifter Camille Solomon and XCEL agent Griffin Mercer learn to trust each other as they infiltrate a shifter faction in Las Vegas-only to find that their growing passion for each other puts their hearts and their lives in danger.

What VampBards talking about:
Ms. Barry has provided a very strong heroine with Cam!  I enjoyed watching Cam put Mercer in his place at every turn.  I'm evil that way, and a sucker for a strong female character.  I really liked watching the two come together, as well.  It was well-crafted and thoughtful writing for the sci fi genre.  Love scenes, eagerly awaited, were tender and integral to the plot.  I didn't find any fluff, no unnecessary side stories, or anything else that deterred from the main plot arc.  Loved to hate the baddie, Harding... but couldn't take focus off the Cam/Mercer storyline long enough to delve into that one further.

Review: The Doomsday Vault

The Doomsday Vault
Author: Steven Harper
Release Date: Nov. 1, 2011
Publisher: ROC
The Clockwork Empire, Book 1
ISBN: #978-0451464293
Genre: Steampunk, Fantasy
Format(s): Paperback (400 pgs), e-book
Book Source: Publisher

About the book:
In a Britannia of clockwork automatons and airships, Alice Michaels’s prospects are looking grim.
The Honorable Alice B. Michaels is in a life or death struggle for survival—socially speaking, that is. At twenty-one, her age, her unladylike interest in automatons, and the unfortunate deaths of most of her family from the plague have sealed her fate as a less than desirable marriage prospect.
But a series of strange occurrences are about to lead Alice in a direction quite beyond the pale. High above the earth on the American airship USS Juniper, Gavin Ennock lives for the wind and the sky and his fiddle. After privateers attack the Juniper, he is stranded on the dank, dirty, and merciless streets of London. When Alice’s estranged aunt leaves her a peculiar inheritance, she encounters Gavin under most unusual—even shocking—circumstances.
Then Alice’s inheritance attracts the attention of the Third Ward, a clandestine organization that seizes the inventions of mad geniuses the plague leaves behind—all for the good of the Empire. But even the Third Ward has secrets. And when Alice and Gavin discover them, a choice must be made between the world and the Empire, no matter the risk to all they hold dear.

What B is talking about:
Alice Michaels, the twenty-two year old daughter of an ailing Baron of the British Empire, is titled, beautiful, and intelligent. Unfortunately for her, she is also uniquely gifted when it comes to the automatons that exist alongside humans in the world left ravaged by a clockwork plague, exhibiting a truer affinity for the machines she builds than other members of the society by whom she so desperately wants to be accepted.
Having watched his captain and his best friend be murdered by pirates, and finding himself abandoned by his employer on the filthy streets of London, Gavin Ennock wants nothing more than to somehow earn his way back home to Boston. He, too, is trapped by the rules of a society that doesn’t want him, and he soon finds himself in the employ of the Third Ward, a secret organization determined to “contain” the most dangerous members of the plague’s survivors: the clockworkers.
Since I am continually fascinated by all things Steampunk, even the cover of The Doomsday Vault, with its promise of corsets and clockworks, drew me in right away. Harper strikes a nice balance between the apparatuses themselves and the science behind them, the latter being exhibited mostly through Alice’s determination to find out how everything works. The technology is present throughout the story, making it as much a character as any of the people Harper writes about.
Harper begins The Doomsday Vault with a jolt, throwing Alice directly into a zombie attack while on her way to a ball. Gavin’s beginning in the novel is similarly a shock, with pirates taking over his beloved dirigible, the Juniper. Adding to the darker nature of the story, there are some truly unlikeable characters throughout the novel as well.
Although the two main characters are indisputably heroes, Gavin even more so than Alice, there are instances where they must both sacrifice their better moral judgment for the “greater good.” This is true of many of the secondary characters even more often. While sometimes a successful device for lending a feeling of gravity to a work, in this case, it left me feeling uncomfortable and distant on more than one occasion.
The Doomsday Vault was a good way to start off a new series in a highly specialized genre. Its combination of science and fantasy and good versus evil work well, especially when that evil isn’t always what it appears to be. Harper also seems to be using a fictional past to encourage patience and tolerance in ourselves, as well as giving us a warning about letting our own fears be used against us. Though it sometimes relies too heavily on the main characters to show how the pieces of the mystery within the story are connected, The Doomsday Vault is still a clever and worthwhile take on the Steampunk universe.

Review: Dead Mann Walking

Dead Mann Walking
Author: Stefan Petrucha
Release Date: Oct 4, 2011
Publisher: Roc
Hessius Mann Novel #1
ISBN: #978-0451464217
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Format(s): Paperback (342 pgs), e-book
Book Source: Publisher

About the book:
JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE DEAD DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN'T HAVE A LIFE...
After Hessius Mann was convicted of his wife's murder, suppressed evidence came to light and the verdict was overturned — too bad he was already executed.
Thanks to the miracles of modern science Hessius was brought back to life. Sort of. Now that he's joined the ranks of Fort Hammer's pulse-challenged population, Hessius attempts to make a “living” as a private investigator.
But when a missing persons case leads to a few zombies cut to pieces, Hessius starts thinking that someone's giving him the run-around — and it's not like he's in any condition to make a quick getaway...

What G & U are talking about:
Dead Mann Walking is a debut novel in a new series about Hessius Mann, a zombie detective.  It is not the typical urban fantasy that Gikany and Una read, but we found it quite interesting.  This new Hessius Mann series may be something to pick up and keep an eye on.
The novel begins with Hessius, our main character, fussing over an article about pieces of a zombie that were found in the desert.  From this point the story begins to flow and unfold into an engrossing mystery/detective drama.  Despite being somewhat simple, there are many fascinating twists to this tale that we did not see coming.
One of the reasons we enjoyed the novel was the main character himself, Hessius.  He, too, is a chak, a more derogatory term for a zombie.  He died (well, was executed) and due to the wonders of medical breakthroughs and science, was brought back to life.  Hessius would argue that it is not quite life, more like a new existence.  Hessius is not the macho, courageous hero; he has faults.  One of the greatest aspects of him is that he is, usually, aware of his faults and does his best to fight against them.  But he is not free from weakness either and following along with him while he struggles is really enthralling.  His complexity allows him to be truly grounded and gives him a realism that comes alive on the page.
The mythology developed in Dead Mann Walking is very intriguing as well.  It is not the stereotypical zombie novel.  However, we haven’t read many novels where zombies were the focal point (they are usually tools of some other paranormal entity).  But we found the mythology fresh (even if the zombies are not) and fascinating.  What is really interesting is that for being about animated dead bodies, it really is not gratuitously graphic or nasty.  Any discussion of decomposition is straightforward and clinically done – when necessary.  Those with a weak stomach should have no issues with reading this novel.
Between the detective drama and the on-going political and racial issues between chakz and Live Bloods, there is much going on in this world to keep you gripped to the page.  However, with the way the novel ends, we wonder where the series will go from here.  One thing is for sure, Dead Mann Walking is a great new novel and we look forward to the next one in this series.

ARC Review: Last Breath

Last Breath
Author: Rachel Caine
Release Date: Nov. 1, 2011
Publisher: NAL
Morganville Vampires #11
ISBN: #978-0451234872
Genre: Young Adult
Format(s): Hardcover (352 pgs), Paperback (4/2012), e-book
Book Source: Publisher

About the book:
With her boss preoccupied researching the Founder Houses in Morganville, student Claire Danvers is left to her own devices when she learns that three vampires have vanished without a trace.
She soon discovers that the last person seen with one of the missing vampires is someone new to town-a mysterious individual named Magnus. After an uneasy encounter with Morganville's latest resident, Claire is certain Magnus isn't merely human. But is he a vampire-or something else entirely?

What Una is talking about:
I picked up the Morganville Vampires by accident.  There was a short story in an anthology and it really piqued my interest.  Last Breath is the eleventh book in the Morganville Vampire series and the world continues to fascinate me while the characters continue to enthrall me.  Ms. Caine has expanded on the departure we saw in her last book and it only enriched the experience.
Last Breath finds the residents in the Glass house in the center of scrutiny.  Without spoiling anyone who has missed reading the previous book (Bite Club - review HERE), we begin with the ramifications of our cliffhanger.  Sides are once again being drawn between the vampires and humans with our heroes – the Glass House residents – Michael, Eve, Shane and Claire, once again caught in the middle.  There is a new evil that has infiltrated the town and it puts the last nemesis, Bishop, to shame.  However, I will say that the book summary (see above) does not seem to match my feeling or personal understanding of the actual book plot.  Or more to the point, I feel that it was a little misleading.  I did read an uncorrected proof so maybe this is the reason.  That being said, it did not detract from my enjoyment of the novel.
I admit, this is a young adult novel that does have the young adult aspects – language, slang, angst, but it does so in a way that allows adults like me to relate to the reality and not be irritated by it.  Ms. Caine does an expert job in crafting this series.  In the previous book, she allowed us to glimpse portions of the story from Shane’s perspective (up until then, the stories were told from Claire’s point of view).  In Last Breath, Ms. Caine pulls out the stops and gives us insight into several other characters, all of whom I have been wondering about their perspective.  It truly added a new refreshing aspect and overall enriched the novel immensely.
The Morganville Vampire series is a young adult novel that I would recommend mothers and daughters could share.  I would say that it is best for ages mature middle school age through high school and up.  There are, what I would consider some adult choices that are made and I feel are not appropriate for young/elementary school age or immature students.
Suffice to say, this is another great book in a wonderful series.  Last Breath took mine away several times.  I admit, I did get worried and teary-eyed in a few places.  However, Ms. Caine did not disappoint.  Go out and try the Morganville Vampire series, but I do not recommend you start with Last Breath.  There is such a rich back-story, it is well worth starting at the beginning or, at least, you can start at book 9, Ghost Town, (review HERE) as Twimom did.
