Publisher: Grand Central
Lords of Deliverance #3
ISBN: #978-0446574501
Genre: Paranormal Romance

About the book:
|
Thanatos, the most deadly Horseman of the Apocalypse, has endured thousands of years of celibacy to prevent the end of days. But just one night with the wickedly sexy Aegis Guardian, Regan Cooper, shatters centuries of resolve. Yet their passion comes with a price. And Thanatos must face a truth more terrifying than an apocalypse-he's about to become a father.
Demon-slayer Regan Matthews never imagined herself the maternal type, but with the fate of the world hanging in the balance she had no choice but to seduce Thanatos and bear his child. Now, as the final battle draws closer and his rage at being betrayed is overshadowed by an undeniable passion for the mother of his child, Thanatos has a life-shattering realization: To save the world, he must sacrifice the only thing he's ever wanted-a family.
What I’m talking about:
|
Lethal Rider opens roughly 8 months after the exciting conclusion of the second Lords of Deliverance book, Immortal Rider. We are quickly brought up to speed on the state of Regan Matthews, long-time Aegis demon hunter who is 8 months pregnant with the child of the fourth Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Thanatos aka Death. In the previous book we followed Regan as she was tricked into believing that a child by Than would stay the impending Demon Apocalypse. At the end of the book, Than’s brother and sister put him into a coma-like state and did not tell him about the child. Now Than has escaped his catatonic state and tracked down Regan. He is hell-bent on revenge until he finds out she is carrying his child, after which Than experiences an array of emotions and isn’t certain which direction he should take.
First of all... I LOVED this book. I tell you, each subsequent book of Ms. Ione’s series gets better. The opening chapters of Lethal Rider are superb. The story seamlessly moves into the next phase of the story while bringing the reader up to speed on pertinent events from the previous book. The details from the past are woven into this story in a manner that doesn't seem intrusive.
Regan and Than have a lot to overcome, and it’s not a smooth ride. She was brought up to hate demons and although she knows they aren’t all bad, it’s still tough for her to trust in and believe them. Yet she also has a major guilt complex over what happened to Than (she tricked him into having sex with her), even though she was mislead and drugged. Finally, she has low self-confidence, believing that once the baby is born, she will be unwanted by her Aegis family. Than... well, he’s an immortal half angel-half demon, and harbinger of death. He lead a celibate life for roughly 5,000 years, believing if he had sex, his seal would break and he would become the demon, Death. He is alternately lusting after and admiring Regan, then hating her for her part in his “deflowering.”
I will say that I felt sorry for both characters - my heart ached because I felt that they were both victims, and they were both hurt by the situation. I felt that there slow journey to love was well-played and extremely sensual. Although even I had a rough time in the beginning when Than was determined to use Regan as a sex slave to “make up” for the 8 months he was placed in a coma. The section of the book when this issue comes to a confrontation made me very nervous. There is a very fine line -- although, Than may have said to himself he's not going to force Regan to have sex, his words are very much to the contrary. It made me squirm, even with Regan refusing to beg and taking charge of her situation.
Although this is Regan and Than’s story, the supporting characters all play significant rolls. Pestilence, the first Horseman and only sibling to turn evil, is gaining power and control over the Earth. Several times while reading the book, I wondered what an average human was experiencing during these dark days. We see what the demon population is going through, but what about someone like me? I would love to read about that! Pestilence is still utterly wicked and the perfect villain.
There are also a wide array of characters that will continue to be significant in the next book. Some of the Aegis brethren are of particular interest. They make some (in my opinion) really bad decisions and draw a line in the sand. I cannot wait to see what happens next! Plus we have the heavenly watchers Reaver and Harvester... knowing that Reaver’s book is coming out after the final Lords of Deliverance, I am already putting pieces of the puzzle together trying to figure out what will happen. Finally there is an unknown “baddie,” someone helping Pestilence, and WOW - will there be some fall out in the next book. Although I like the twists that lead to some of the actions in Lethal Rider, I was not entirely on board with the reasons behind the biggest one. Unfortunately, I can’t discuss much of that without major spoilers, so you get cryptic here.
Finally, I have to say that the humor in these stories is incredible... Dry, witty and fantabulous!! Sarcasm is infused into almost every character’s persona... Here is a little sample from Regan:
Hanging out with her colleagues in her spare time would be about as fun as unclogging a toilet with a spoon.
In conclusion, Lethal Rider truly is the best book yet from the series. The story had me on the edge of my proverbial seat almost the whole book. The plot was fantastic, the twists and turns suspenseful, and there is still so much to be resolved. I can only imagine where Ms. Ione will take us from here!

About the book:
|
Arik Wagner, a soldier with the U.S. Army's paranormal unit, the R-XR, kissed a girl and liked it. And then he went to hell as punishment. Where he's spent weeks being tortured…and plotting revenge.
Limos, Horsewoman of the Apocalypse, isn't your average girl. She's immortal, dangerous, and her fiancé is Satan himself. In a moment of weakness, she gave in to her desire and kissed Arik, triggering her fiancé's wrath – and his claim on her. In order to save Arik, and the world, Limos must make a dangerous pact with her recently turned evil brother, Pestilence. A deal that might just cost her her soul…and her heart.
What I’m talking about:
|
Immortal Rider is the second book of Ms. Ione’s Demonica Series spin-off series, Lords of Deliverance. This series tells of the pending apocalypse by following the Four Horsemen as they struggle to maintain a balance between good and evil. Each is cursed with carrying one of the four Seals of Armageddon (if all four break... hell on earth). Immortal Rider focuses on the only female rider, Limos, aka Famine. Limos is betrothed to the evil Lord Satan, who can claim her if she ever gives in to lust for another. In a moment of weakness she does just that - kissing Arik as she never has any other. This sends Arik to the demon realm to be tortured, and sets of a chain of events which ultimately could break Limos’ seal, setting free Famine.
As events unfold and our hero and heroine are brought together, I am amazed at the intricacy of the storyline and richness of the characters. Ms. Ione has added a whole new level onto her already amazing Demonica world. And unlike the first book, Eternal Rider (review HERE), there isn’t a steep learning curve in Immortal Rider, so the book is less confusing and a smoother read.
One thing I love about this story is that the players are gritty and raw - even the heroes/heroines aren’t always good. This gives the characters complexity and intensity. Limos is a prime example. As a horsewoman raised by demons in the underworld, she longed to marry Satan and bring about the apocalypse. Even after meeting her brothers, she continues to work to bring them down, but over time, she learns to love them and chooses not to marry Satan. Yet, even in the current day and age, when she is “good,” she continues to lie and hurt those around her. She has to own up to her mistakes, which creates a more emotionally driven storyline.
Arik and Limos are HOT. If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading any of Ms. Ione’s work... Well, have a fan, ice water, cold shower, etc. near by. But it’s not all about the hot smex (really, it’s not!). The bonds created around these two characters heightens the emotional satisfaction and HEA conclusion. And let me tell you... it wasn’t just them. I am already head-over-heels in love with Thanatos (aka Death) and Regan... what a cliff-hanger of sorts. Their story comes up next in Lethal Rider (June 2012).
There really wasn’t much I didn’t enjoy about this story. I did feel that there are a few too many “I’m not gay, not that there is anything wrong with that” references, but it didn’t diminish the overall enjoyment of the book. There is some graphic violence, but once again, it’s value-added for the story and not filler for added action. I highly recommend Immoral Rider to all paranormal fans... but I do suggest you start with Eternal Rider first.

ARC Review: Eternal Rider
Author: Larissa Ione
Release Date: March 29, 2011
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Lords of Deliverance Book #1
ISBN: #978-0446574495
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): paperback (432 pgs), e-book
I received a copy of this book from the PUBLISHER for the purposes of an honest review.
From the author’s website:
They are here. They ride. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
His name is Ares, and the fate of mankind rests on his powerful shoulders. If he falls to the forces of evil, the world falls too. As one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, he is far stronger than any mortal, but even he cannot fight his destiny forever. Not when his own brother plots against him.
Yet there is one last hope. Gifted in a way other humans can't-or won't-understand, Cara Thornhart is the key to both this Horseman's safety and his doom. But involving Cara will prove treacherous, even beyond the maddening, dangerous desire that seizes them the moment they meet. For staving off eternal darkness could have a staggering cost: Cara's life.
What I’m talking about:
Although new, the Lords of Deliverance series is set in Ms. Ione’s amazing DEMONICA world. Many of the characters and locations from her previous series are present and active participants of this new book. The mythology and rules follow suit. It’s a great continuation for fans of the Demonica series, but it’s also a wonderful place to “jump in” if you are new to Ms. Ione’s work.
The series centers around the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but this isn’t your run-of-the-mill retelling. Ms. Ione creates here own version of these biblical characters, two of which made an appearance in Larissa’s fifth Demonica Series book, Sin Undone. In fact, this book takes place shortly after the conclusion of Sin Undone.
Eternal Rider features the second horseman, Ares aka “War.” He is over 5,000 years old and has been living a fairly quite existence along side his sister and brothers after being cursed to carry the Seals of Armageddon. In Sin Undone, the Seal of the first horseman, Pestilence, broke, turing Ares’ fun-loving brother into a pure evil demon hell-bent on breaking the Seals of his siblings, therefore bringing about the end of days. Each horseman has an “Achilles heel” that can cause his/her Seal to break. For Ares, it happens to be the life of a human woman, Cara.
Cara’s solitary life is going nowhere, and she is a shell of her former self. When she happens to get mixed up with a hellhound and mistaken for a demon, her life is forever changed. Soon she comes under the protection of Ares and his “good siblings,” for her death would mean the fall of the second horseman and rise of War. As Cara learns about the paranormal world she never knew existed, she regains her inner strength and becomes more alive.
Ms. Ione has another winner with Eternal Rider! She takes the already magnificent world from her Demonica Series and adds more layers without creating unnecessary rules or confusion. The mythology flows naturally from one series to the next. For those that haven’t read the Demonica Series (YOU SHOULD!), there may be a bit of a learning curve when it comes to the terminology and characters, but it is worth the time (she even includes a handy glossary in the front).
One thing that I love about Ms. Ione’s writing is that she doesn’t follow any “preset patterns” for paranormal romances. For example: Ares and Cara are a great couple. One thing that I adore about them is that they are not a pre-destined pair. They meet, they get to know one another, they deal with life-and-death situations and they fall in love - even though neither of them is looking for it to happen. And I adore Ares wonderful sense of self-humor. I love his self-berating diatribes over his sometimes silly teenager-like obsessions over Cara.
Another example of how this story goes it’s own way is found in “turned” brother Reseph aka “Pestilence.” He. Is. Evil. In a genre filled with “happy endings,” I kept hoping, like the siblings, the Reseph would have a moment of compassion, but there are no redeeming qualities to this demon. Pestilence is to Reseph what Angelus is to Angel (from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series): a pure evil soul trying to wipeout the memories of the “good guy” he once was. A character you truly hate.
This tale is full of fast moving action and steamy romance. A warning - there is some graphic violence, but it’s not added for shock value--it’s an intricate part to the telling of the story. And I will admit, for most of the book I felt the smex wasn’t on par with the erotic tellings in the Demonic books, but Ms. Ione comes through in the end with some steamy stuff! *blushes* This story is a MUST for Demonica Series fans and worth the read for anyone else!
My Rating:
Really enjoyed - strongly recommend (A-)

Celebrating... Larissa Ione

Eternity Embraced

Demonica Series Book #3.5
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): e-book - novella length
NOTE: this book was originally released in the compilation The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2, published by Running Press (September 2009).
From the author’s website:
Desire…
Demon slayer Andrea Cole has always taken down the demons and vampires she hunts without mercy. But when a fellow slayer is captured and turned into a vampire by a sadistic monster, she must choose between loyalty to her family and the man she loves.
Versus Instinct…
Kaden Quinn has dedicated his life to slaying vampires, so when he is turned into one, his greatest nightmare comes to life. And when the woman he loves is thrown into a dungeon with him — as food — he must battle new instincts and old desires, and choose between his life, and hers.
What I’m talking about:
This wonderful short from Larissa Ione’s Demonica Series focuses on two Aegis Guardian agents (demon slayers): Andrea and Kaden. When the story starts, we find out that Kaden has been taken hostage by a cell of ruthless vampires. Although Andrea hopes her partner and lover has not been made into a vampire, she is quickly disappointed when she finds him, complete with fangs, in an underground cell in Oregon.
Andrea and Kaden have been mislead their entires lives - believing that demons, vampires and shifters are all evil and must be destroyed. So when Andrea is confronted with the fact that her true love is now something she abhors, she must battle her own beliefs to determine if Kaden is still the man she loves. Similarly, Kaden realizes that although he is a vampire, he isn’t a depraved creature-of-the-night. Their physical reactions to one another and the emotional upheaval that ensues after their reunion is fabulous and riveting. Even though this is a novella-length story, it is rich with detail and full of action. I came to care about Andrea and Kaden quickly and enjoyed following them on their journey.
For those that have not read any of Ms. Ione’s amazing Demonica books, this is a great introduction. Although the story has minimal interaction with the series’ regular cast, it is a wonderful example of Ms. Ione’s amazing talent. For series regulars, it’s a great reminder of why we love this series! It is unconnected to the full-length novels, however, it does mention characters, some which do not come into play until the 4th Demonica story. I strongly recommend you go out and pick up this novella today!

Really enjoyed - strongly recommend (A-)

Sunday Snippets #22
From Sin Undone by Larissa Ione
Book release: Tuesday August 24, 2010, so in addition this Snippet is also a
“Foreplay is overrated.” The gash in her arm screamed with pain as she shed her pants and hopped up on the stretcher. She left her thigh and ankle holsters in place, though, because her weapons weren’t going anywhere.
“Then you’re not doing it right.” Con snapped on some surgical gloves, somehow making the sound and the action erotic. “You’ve had shitty lovers.”
“You were one of my lovers,” she pointed out, but he didn’t take the bait.
“Once. And there is something to be said for a hard, fast f*ck.” His voice became a mesmerizing purr. “But there’s nothing like taking the time to slowly peel off every article of clothing, to kiss every inch of your lover’s skin as you do it. To lick all the sensitive places until they quiver. To explore all the textures of your partner’s body with your fingers, your mouth.” His fangs flashed as he added, “Your teeth.”
Hunger gripped her so fiercely she had to struggle to breathe. Yet somehow, she managed to speak calmly, as if Con’s graphic words hadn’t affected her. “The end result is the same. An orgasm. So why waste all that time? In the hour is takes you to lick someone from head to toe” -- God, seriously? Want. -- “I could have had half a dozen orgasms.” Assuming she was with some fictional male who could come that many times, too -- or a Seminus demon, whose ejaculate left females climaxing over and over, even if he left the room.
“Trust me,” he murmured, “the wait is worth it. You’ll get all those, but they’ll be better. Hotter. A-f*cking-mazing.”

Review: Sin Undone
Sin Undone
Author: Larissa Ione
Release Date: August 24, 2010
Publisher: Hachette Book Group
ISBN: #978-0-446-55681-1
Genre: Paranormal Romance
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review.
From the author’s website:
HER TOUCH IS DEADLY
As the only female Seminus demon ever born, master assassin Sinead Donnelly is used to being treated like an outcast. She spent decades enslaved, and now vows she’ll die before she’ll relinquish her freedom again. Then Sin’s innate ability to kill her enemies goes awry: She creates a lethal new werewolf virus that sparks a firestorm of panic and violence.
HIS HUNGER CAN’T BE DENIED
Half-werewolf, half-vampire Conall Dearghul is charged with bringing in Sin to face punishment for the plague. And she’s no stranger: He’s bound to her by blood, and the one sexual encounter they shared has left him hungering for her raw sensuality. Worse, Sin is the underworld’s most wanted and Con soon learns he’s the only one who can help her . . . and that saving her life might mean sacrificing his own.
What I’m talking about:
Picking up right where Ecstasy Unveiled (Demonica Series book #4) ends, the gang at Underworld General Hospital (UGH - hospital for demon/paranormal kind) face a plague that has the potential to eradicate all werewolves. At the center of the outbreak is tough-skinned Sinead (Sin), the sister of Lore - hero from book #4. She recently learned that she is the only female Seminus demon (a true “freak of nature”) and has 3 half-brothers that run UGH. She has been used, abused and all alone for pretty much her entire life. She feels horrible about what’s happened, but cannot express any emotions on the matter, for as a master assassin, Sin cannot afford emotions or morals.
Even though this is the 5th (and final) book in the Demonica Series, it is written in a way that can be enjoyed by both long-time fans and new-to-the-series readers alike. (Of course, if you haven’t read any of the earlier books I recommend them all!) Ms. Ione gives just enough background to help new readers understand her amazing mythology, without completely rehashing the first 4 books. In addition, the story lines are fairly self-contained to this book. Sin is pretty much new to the Demonica world, so we don’t have a long history in the earlier books. Other than the fact that Sin started the virus in the previous book, everything you need to know is presented for you in Sin Undone.
The intense story lines of Sin Undone are sensational! This book is more actioned-packed that the earlier Demonica stories (with the possible exception of a near-apocalyptic fight in Passion Unleashed), and it works. In addition, there is a lot of political posturing and “behind the scenes” dealing among the various werewolf tribes that add compelling layers of complexity to the story. I was on the preverbal “edge of my seat,” throughout the book. Not only is the staff of UGH trying to save the werewolf race, but also protect Sin from being arrested for her crimes or falling victim to her own assassins (who want to become the next master). Sin and Con are constantly on the move and they take me along with them.
Sin and Con are a pair that work. Even though she is (accidentally) killing off members of his race, Con sees the true light at her core and works hard to save Sin from herself. And as he does, Con realizes he too needs to get over his past so that he can have a future. Sin stays true to her tough-ass nature, but finds a way to let Con into her life and heart. Ms. Ione has a remarkable talent for exposing raw emotions in her characters in a way that takes me along on their highs and lows. Each step Con and Sin take in their relationship--the unmasking of true feelings: hurt, abandonment, shame, disappointment, joy, lust, love--are amazingly written and emotionally satisfying.
I also need to mention that Ms. Ione writes some of the BEST smex scenes ever... and this book is no exception!
There is a enjoyable side story involving werewolf, Luc, which is a special treat for long-time Demonica readers, but is just as nice for new fans of the series. In addition, we meet some new players that will spin off into Ms. Ione’s upcoming Lords of Deliverance series (March 2011).
All-in-all a fantastic ride and phenomenal finish to one of my favorite paranormal series.

Sunday Snippets #1
I’m going to try a new feature on my blog call Sunday’s Snippets. The idea is to give you a little look into a book I love or want to read. I hope you enjoy...
Sunday’s Snippets #1
From Passion Unleashed by Larissa Ione.
Hell, he didn’t want to deal with any of this. He’d kept himself awake last night wondering why he hadn’t taken her virginity yet, but this morning, another horrifying thought had come to him. Was he dragging this out because he wanted to get to know her? Was he hoping she’d get to know him, learn to love him, and want to show him by making love to him?He almost laughed out loud. Who the hell would love someone else enough to give up their life for a night of sex?
No one. Which meant he might as well give up. He could stay with her, protect her until she got home, and then he coud go out in a blaze of glory, killing vamps or something.
He’d had worse plans.
So... that was it, then. He was going to die, and Serena was going to live.
