Review: Portrait of a Crossroads by Kelly Rand
Author: Kelly Rand
Release Date: May 18, 2013
Publisher: Riptide Publishing
ISBN: #978-1626490116
Genre: GLBT – lesbian
Format(s): e-book
Book Source: NetGalley
About the book:
|
Since finding her father’s body at the bottom of the basement stairs, Annette’s been drifting through her days, watching cars pass down the rural Ontario crossroads beside her house. Her brothers have no great ambitions, but Annette remembers a time when she did. She just can’t remember what they are.
Then she meets her neighbour, Sadie, a tattooed, world-weary, newly single portrait artist. Something about Sadie awakens something in Annette—the essence she captures in her subjects, perhaps, or the way the old familiar crossroads seem so fresh and promising from the view out Sadie’s window.
Annette begins to help Sadie, cleaning brushes and filing invoices between long lazy afternoons of conversations and shared silences. Soon, though, Annette wants more from her enigmatic neighbor, and their slowly heating friendship melts into passionate nights. Somewhere along the way, Annette discovers that her lover has illuminated for her, as with the people Sadie paints, not just her essence, but her own endless worlds of possibilities.
What B is talking about:
|
Since discovering her father after his suicide, Annette keeps mostly to herself, gauging the momentum of the world outside her house by sound. Trucks, cars, and airplanes provide the only movement along the crossroad where she lives, their sounds having grown so commonplace that she doesn’t even have to look to know what they are as they pass by. She should be moving on to the next phase of her life, like so many of her recent classmates, but even the glossy college brochures don’t tempt her. But, when the artist who lives next door offers Annette a glimpse into her own life, Annette feels like she’s finally waking up from a very long, tedious dream.
There is quite a lot to like about this short story, and I wasn’t sure what to start with. Ms. Rand has an excellent ability to create vivid settings, her descriptions relating not just color, but texture and history as well. In fact, these scenes have the potential to overshadow the characters themselves, but fortunately don’t. By contrast, there’s a thoughtful economy in the portrayal of most of Annette’s life until she meets Sadie and walks through her door into a different world.
Although Annette’s circumstances in Portrait of a Crossroads could be viewed as tragic, they aren’t. Annette isn’t so much grieving, as she is waiting, but in watching the girl she was fade into something she no longer recognizes, she’s not sure where she should be headed next. She’s neither bitter, nor apathetic, but is simply an eighteen-year-old who was knocked off course by loss, and hasn’t yet begun to search for who she really is. She isn’t wallowing, but is very aware and poised to react whenever a new path might reveal itself. In short, I found Annette to be a very interesting young woman.
Sadie, Annette’s neighbor, remains a secondary character throughout the story, never sharing narrating duties with Annette, nor rising to a position of absolute permanence in Annette’s future, which works very well, as it’s Annette’s story. Sadie is older than Annette, is already living her life as she wants to, and is completely open about her sexuality. Once again, Ms. Rand’s knack for allowing the reader to assume Annette’s perspective so thoroughly is put to good use in passages like this:
As Sadie headed for the living room, Annette watched her from head to toe. Her narrow shoulder that shifted under a white shirt thin enough to reveal the faint trace of ink underneath. Her bare feet. They both had bare feet, Annette realized. They had something in common. Neither of them wore shoes.
Sadie represents just a few of the many possibilities Annette hasn’t yet considered, while becoming the impetus for Annette’s renewed self-exploration in the process.
Sex between Annette and Sadie is similarly low-key. While she is fairly certain of Sadie’s attraction to her, it is Annette who ultimately initiates their first time together, and it is their only interaction within the confines of the story. Sadie makes Annette feel a “spark” in a way her former boyfriend never could. With him, Annette was merely biding her time, but Sadie has become her fantasy. When Annette has the opportunity to act on her desires, she chooses to pursue them, and in the process, resumes the forward momentum of her life. Sadie, for her part, is willing, yet cautious, and she accepts her role as both a guide and partner in Annette’s exploration with a fondness that made their interaction even sexier.
Portrait of a Crossroads is, at its simplest, the story of a young woman finding her way. Ms. Rand has created a world of striking contrast for Annette to exist in, taking her from the monotony of a life in stasis and jolting her into an awareness that is rich in both color and feeling. That the main character happens to be a lesbian isn’t even the most noteworthy aspect of the story, which I was very happy to see. Such fanfare could have done significant harm to Ms. Rand’s wonderful storytelling, but nothing of the sort occurs. I haven’t read a great deal of f/f fiction, but if Portrait of a Crossroads is any indication of the genre’s potential, then I’m very excited to see what else might be out there.

About Sharp Bite of Pleasure:
Alexa Dangelis, the daughter of the vampire king of the vampire capitol of Vila Pluvia and the East Coast, has returned home after eight years to attend her father’s funeral. The public believes King Christophe committed suicide, but Alexa thinks he was murdered, possibly by her power hungry half-brother Bradley. She’ll make Bradley pay for his crime before he stops her from becoming the new queen.
Werewolf, Penny Seiler and Alexa were once secret lovers before Alexa left her to marry the West Coast vampire king. Penny has never gotten over Alexa’s betrayal and now she lives in fear that Alexa will try and claim her again. When she and Alexa meet again, the sparks between them flares and Penny slowly succumbs to Alexa’s seduction.
And now for the exclusive excerpt...
The first time Penny and Alexa see each other again after eight years apart…
The floral air brushed over her face, giving her the calming effect she required. She needed some sort of solace after her near breakdown in the bathroom. At least no one had witnessed her embarrassing reaction…well, maybe one had. She didn’t know what excuse she would give Lissa for running from the room like the devil was on her back.
Lissa…Alexa… Her mind was still a jumbled mess and she needed to clear it before she returned inside and pretended like everything was fine. Unfortunately, her date and most likely her brothers would know something was off. They were tuned in to her moods too well. She hated being an open book for them. It disturbed her, just as it had when Alexa walked down those stairs…
Penny shook her head, trying to erase the woman from her mind. She studied the half moon, edgy with the urge to shift and run. For now she would have to wait. Transforming into a snarling and furry beast at a state function like this would be considered gauche.
Giggling at the idea of trotting into the ballroom in her wolf form and scampering around the well-dressed government officials, she walked deeper into the grassy labyrinth.
A few minutes later she reached the center. A small water fountain stood in the corner and a gazebo in the middle with a bench, vacant for her to sit and view the starry sky. For once the sky was clear, unlike the past few months when passing storms had popped up unpredictably.
She sat and listened to the soft breeze flowing through the leaves. Music from the palace trickled over to her. She began to meditate, trying to find a balance taught to her by her therapist years ago.
She was close to reaching equilibrium when she heard a slight crackling on the dirt path behind her. She stiffened and rose, facing the one who would try to claim her soul again.
“Hello, Alexa. Why am I not surprised you’d find me?” She didn’t wait to be addressed. Her voice sounded strong and unyielding, at least to her ears.
“The moment I entered the ballroom, I knew you were there. Your unique scent is easy to recognize.” Alexa emerged from the shadows. “How many years has it been since we last saw one another?” She continued walking toward her and climbed up into the gazebo.
Penny expected Alexa to overpower her. Surprisingly, she kept her distance. Penny didn’t back away as she wanted to and soaked in the vision of this immortal woman who had come close to destroying her with her treachery.
“Eight years to be exact. You look well,” she responded politely. No matter what hardship a vampire went through, they always appeared unmarked by whatever affliction might fall upon them.
“So much time has passed.” Alexa took another step. “You look…distressed. Did my appearance here tonight unsettle you?”
Penny’s laugh was empty. “Stop playing games. You know full well it would ‘unsettle’ me.” She shrugged, feigning boredom. “It’s a knee-jerk reaction. You make quite an impression wherever you go.”
“From the aroma of your sweat and your hesitance, I can tell I made quite the impression on you. You’re not immune to me as you want me to believe.”
Penny backed away and cursed in her head. Humor crossed Alexa’s face and she moved forward.
“So, it’s going to be a cat and mouse game between us?” she asked, placing a hand on her hip. Penny waited for Alexa to charge after her, to grab her and hold her in a passionate embrace like she used to.
“Are you’re remembering all the times we chased each other in the woods and then made love for hours?” Alexa asked, suddenly standing too near.
She did her best not to react when Alexa brushed a finger over her cheek.
“Your touch doesn’t affect me anymore.” Penny stepped back and crossed her arms to hide their trembling. “Actually, I’m thinking how much of a pushy bitch you were.”
Alexa laughed and tapped her mouth with a manicured nail. “I missed you more than you can know.”
Penny laughed hollowly. “Oh please. I’m no longer some dumb, immature kid who ended up fucking a spoiled daddy’s girl.”
Alexa was quiet beside her, although Penny could feel the hum of anger coming from her.
“Alexa, I--”
“No. Don’t apologize,” Alexa moved off to the side and away.
Penny felt like she had lost something. Why? It didn’t make any sense. She was used to that yawning emptiness ever since Alexa had left. She’d almost died after Alexa had been with her one final time with the intent to say goodbye due to her impending marriage. Memories of that night she’d admitted her love made her eyes burn. Shame spread through her over the way she had reacted to Alexa’s rejection in the days following.
“You’re right, I was spoiled. With a snap of my fingers I had whatever I wanted, or my father would acquire it for me.” Sadness filtered into Alexa’s voice.
Sympathy for Alexa clogged Penny’s throat. She jabbed her nails in her palms to stop from reaching for her. Her arms ached with the need to hold Alexa and touch her, but it was more like a phantom pain. She cleared her throat, trying her best to remain civil and not run away or do something stupid like grab Alexa and kiss her.
“I’m sorry about King Christophe. His death…suicide was a horrible loss.”
“He didn’t kill himself!”
She had never heard such an emotional outburst from Alexa before, even when they were intimate with one another. Alexa stepped toward her again. She retreated and landed up against the wooden railing of the gazebo. “The newspapers announced his death after they were sent an official statement. There’s been nonstop talk, rumors…discussions on television and on the blogs.”
“Stupid modern technology,” Alexa muttered, sliding in closer.
Riddled with tension, Penny dug her nails in the railing, observing Alexa carefully. “Don’t tell me you’re surprised by gossip about your family in the media. It’s been like that for years.” She counted herself lucky the gossip rags had never got wind of their relationship.
The only noticeable reaction from Alexa was the small strain lines around her mouth. They vanished as soon as they materialized and she was back to being cold and aloof. Penny snorted. How did I ever fall for this woman in the first place and allow her complete access to my body?
Alexa’s smile made Penny’s stomach contract.
“Now you’re thinking about the times we made love,” Alexa said in an assured voice.
Penny bolted to the center of the gazebo as Alexa slowly stalked her. She’s still upset about her father. Must be the reason she changed the conversation at the drop of a hat. “Your intuition is not what it used to be. I must have been crazy to have a fling with you in the first place.”
Her statement came out harsher than she’d intended and it hit home. Alexa’s cheek twitched and she eyed Penny in stony silence, licking her lips.
Penny’s inner thighs quivered. Shit. Alexa would pick up on it.
“For all your cutting, juvenile remarks, and acting like you’re not attracted to me, your scent tells me the opposite.”
She crossed her arms and widened her stance. “Childish?” She purposely ignored the mention of her arousal. Damn the vamp and her keen sense of smell!
“Yes, you’re acting like a bad-tempered child.” Alexa crossed her arms to mimic her.
Penny longed to stamp her foot in annoyance but didn’t. “You’re such a wise-ass. Some things never change.”
“I agree with you there. We’ve come full circle. Do you remember the first time I caught you? I do. From the moment I saw you at the street fair in Three Points, I wanted you and nothing was going to stop me from taking you.”
Penny remembered all too well. She’d been so scared when the vampire king’s daughter approached her on the street and invited her to spend the night with her at one of the most expensive hotels in Vila Pluvia. She’d politely refused and ran away, searching for her brothers for protection. But Alexa had caught up with her and pushed her into a side alley against a wall and gave her a kiss, her first from a woman. When Alexa got down on her knees and gave her an orgasm with her talented mouth, regardless of being in public, Penny changed her mind and welcomed anything Alexa wanted to do to her. She ended up spending the night and early morning hours rolling around on silk sheets with the seductive, aggressive vamp. Over the course of the next two years, she and Alexa had been together every chance they could get. The majority of their time spent together was them biting and kissing…sucking on one another…
She blinked, coming out of her recollection. Alexa stood less than a foot away. Penny licked her lips this time. Alexa’s mouth fell open and the edge of her fangs peeked out.
Penny’s knees locked together.

Review: Public Display of Affection by Emily Cale
Author: Emily Cale
Release Date: Jan. 18, 2012
Publisher: Decadent
1 Night Stand Series
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Lesbian, Novella
Format(s): e-book
Book Source: Publisher
About the book:
|
After a heartbreaking end to her relationship with her girlfriend, Lucy Stark is looking to try something more adventurous. She turns to Madame Eve’s 1Night Stand service to help her find the perfect woman to push her boundaries and introduce her to the more daring side of a sexual encounter.
Samantha Taylor’s helped more than one woman explore her sexuality, but Lucy’s the first to really get to her. Keeping her walls up and the women she dates from getting inside is a skill she’s managed to master. After one night of unbridled passion, she has to decide whether to give up her hard exterior or let the woman of her dreams slip away.
What I’m talking about:
|
Once again I find myself drawn to Decadent Publishing’s 1 Night Stand Series. In this go around, we meet Lucy, a woman feeling a bit down on her luck and waiting for the other shoe to drop. She was dumped by her girlfriend for another and lost her job. Deciding to try and do something about it, Lucy hires Madame Eve’s service to help her find a woman who will break her out of her vanilla world. And as always, Madame Eve delivers more than Lucy expected.
I was immediately drawn into the story from the beginning. Ms. Cale is able to capture Lucy’s raw emotions on page so that I too was nervous and second guessing Lucy’s decision to utilize the services Madame Eve offered. Although Lucy tells herself that she wants to move beyond her vanilla nature, I think she really wants to break free of her ex, Kristen.
After a short while, Sam shows up at Lucy’s hotel room and takes charge right away. She orders Lucy to put on a butterfly vibrator under her clothing and then takes her out for dessert at the hotel restaurant. What happens next is delicious! Using a remote control, Sam stimulates Lucy off and on while engaging in polite dinner conversation. I enjoyed equal parts of Sam’s excitement to control the situation and Lucy's mixed emotions over wanting to orgasm and fear of doing so in public. The well comprised scene was extremely enjoyable for all!
Although I felt the first part of the story was well written and exciting, the coherency of characters seemed to fall away after the first two chapters. At once point later, Lucy demands the remote for the vibrator, and she pushes Sam. For me, the burst of confidence and aggression felt too sudden. Behavior isn’t modified overnight. In addition, the Dominatrix-lite, Sam, suddenly is willing to step out of character and play submissive. Again, I felt these changes should take time to develop.
Overall, Public Display of Affection is an enjoyable story, but I feel it suffered in its short length. I became engrossed and hoped for more. The personality roll-reversal of the last chapter may have worked with more character development, but in the novella length it felt too drastic. With that said, the story has some tender and smexy moments which make it worth the read!

Quickie Review: Hot Buzz
*NOTE: THIS REVIEW HAS BEEN EDITED on Sept. 16, 2012. This story was originally reviewed under the title "Good Vibrations" and was published on April 24, 2012 as part of the Edge Series by Decadent Publishing. I have updated the links and book information, but the review remains the original review (title of book only change).

Jerri can’t sleep at night. Every night she hears Krysta pleasure herself with her vibrator in her bedroom. Jerri wants to be the one to help Krysta find satisfaction and much more.
Then one night Jerri’s jealousy gets the best of her and she confronts Krysta. She’ll prove to her that something like a vibrator can’t give her satisfaction, and only a flesh and blood woman like herself can.
What I’m talking about:
|
This is my second Edge story, and once again the short format delivers. For those not familiar, Decadent Publishing has a hot little series, The Edge, of unrelated (or in groups of related) short erotic stories. They are vignettes - views into a romance, but not the whole picture. The stories are not character or plot-driven, but rather snapshots of a few sexy moments.
Hot Buzz is the story of lonely Jerri who has pined for her roommate Krysta for 5 years. Fearful of becoming another notch on Krysta's bedpost, Jerri keeps her feelings hidden. That is until one night while out at a club and both women engage in some buzzed flirtation with other people. For some reason it is this night that the true colors show. They hungrily take one another in a night of passion and vibrators.
Hot Buzz gives us just enough insight into the longing Jerri has experienced over the years -- enough to give the reader reason to care and cheer for the couple. Jerri and Krysta are hot in bed, but getting there was a little annoying. The jealous almost "cat-fighting" isn’t my cup of tea, but it brought the two together for an erotic coupling - and that was most certainly enjoyable. And in the end, the reader is left with the notion that everything will work out nicely for these two. I like my happy endings! All-in-all Hot Buzz is an enjoyable, erotic read.

About the book:
|
Deborah Murnay has a life most women would die for. She has a loving wife of four years who gives her anything she wants. But, Deborah hides a dark secret. Her wife Genevieve not only enjoys kinky, dangerous sex, but is insanely jealous and possessive. When a violent argument between the two leaves Deborah bruised and battered, she has no other choice but to run away.
Through some intricate planning on Deborah’s part, she’s able to trick Genevieve into thinking she’s dead. Deborah becomes Sharon Wade and ends up hundreds of miles away in the small town of Woodberry Creek where she can start over again, even though she lives in fear that Genevieve will find her and kill her.
When grade school teacher Bridgette Woodberry notices her new neighbor, she quickly figures out Woodberry Creek’s new resident is hiding something. Deborah knows she can’t have a future with Bridgette, but finds herself attractive to the kindhearted redhead whose kisses and warm embrace makes her feel protected.
As Deborah turns to Bridgette to help heal her scars, Genevieve is waiting for the right moment to take back her wife and make her pay for deceiving her.
What I’m talking about:
|
Sleeping with the Frenemy is a lesbian retelling of the 1991 film, Sleeping with the Enemy, starring Julia Roberts. For those unfamiliar with the story, it involves a wife’s escape from an abusive husband by faking her own death. In Ms. Grant’s version, we witness the extremely HOT yet harmful relationship between Deborah and Genevieve. The women have been married for 5 years, and at first it appears they have a wonderful relationship and ideal life. Yet as the story progresses, we witness the extent to which Gen abuses and controls Deborah. Similar to the movie, Deborah escapes the marriage by faking her death and moving to a small town far away. However, soon enough Gen finds out that Deborah has betrayed her and plots her revenge.
The story reads well and moves at a good pace. Even though I saw the movie (many years ago), I still experienced a suspenseful thrill. Although there weren’t any major surprises, Ms. Grant changed enough of the details that kept the book fresh, and she makes it her own story. Even though I knew everything would work out, I was still very much on edge worried about Gen showing up!!
I enjoyed the many sides of Gen. It would have been easy to create a character that was strictly evil, but Ms. Grant gives her antagonist a human side. Gen loves Deborah, she just has a warped sense of right and wrong (and what constitutes a healthy argument). The couple share some of the most erotic scenes I have ever read. Their passion is intense, and Deborah willing enjoys their moments together, until it goes too far. Warning - the sexual content of this story is smutterific!
Once Deborah escapes, she finds herself in a town where everyone is open and kind. She is a broken woman, but finds herself attracted to and opening up to neighbor, Bridgette. It’s an enjoyable contrast to see Deborah learning to love and trust again.
Overall, Sleeping with the Frenemy is a good read, and although I’m not a huge contemporary romance fan, I found the book enjoyable. The story is familiar but with enough changes to make it fresh and remain suspenseful.

About the book: |
When medical student Valentine Darrow is bitten by a Vampire on her way home to propose to her lover, Alexa Newland, her life becomes a nightmare. She is consumed—both by a craving for human blood, and by an obsession to find her attacker and bring him to justice. Alexa is determined to be everything that Valentine needs, but when Val's appetite outstrips Alexa's ability to nourish her, Alexa decides to undergo a dramatic and risky procedure in order to save her lover's soul.
Will Valentine be able to control her thirst—for blood and for vengeance? And can Valentine and Alexa's relationship endure against seemingly impossible odds?
What I’m talking about: |
On the what should have been the biggest night of her life, Valentine Darrow, daughter of political big wig, is brutally attacked and wakes to find her life drastically altered. She discovers that she’s been infected with a virus that consumes her red blood cells from the inside, and in order to live she must consume blood. Yep, she’s a vampire.
Ever supportive is Valentine’s true love, Alexa. Alexa is determined to make their relationship work under the strain of Val’s growing blood lust. Together they are introduced to a world they only believed to exist in fantasy. They are driven to find and bring down the mysterious vampire that not only attacked Alexa, but other socialites as well.
I will admit I had a tough time getting into this book at first. The story line was interesting - I loved the analytical view of the vampirism - breaking it down into medical terms and biological processes. But I wasn’t emotionally bonding with Val and Alexa. I think it’s because their love was fully and deeply developed before the book even began, and the reader is expected to take this as fact. However, without the slow development of the relationship within the context of the story, it was hard for me to connect.
As Val grew into her new lifestyle, her constant concerns over harming Alexa, her never-ending nightmares over her attacker and the drive to identify this elusive vampire began to grow old and repetitive. But right at that point when it began to bother me, there was a significant change in the book.
In the very center of the book, the story shifted from Val’s point-of-view to Alexa’s POV. It was introduced following a dramatic scene in the storyline. I enjoyed the dynamics, however, all to often I would get confused thinking Val was speaking, when it was truly Alexa. It seemed that in both situations, the woman who was behind the POV was strong and the partner was more needy or weak. Because both voices felt similar - down to using the same arguments to protect their partner, there were times I had to re-read a passage to clarify who was talking.
All gimmicks aside, there is a very good reason for the change in POV, and after this point, the book really picked up steam. I enjoyed looking at the world from Alexa’s POV, especially as she makes a daring attempt to create an ideal situation in which she will be able to safely satisfy Val’s need for blood.
In addition to the changes in POV, the story began to move forward at a much quicker pace. The women started tabling their anxieties over harming the other and began working on finding answers about the attacks.
The book ended with a satisfying conclusion in the mystery of “whodunit,” however, unanswered questions remain - namely WHY? and who is ultimately responsible for the attacks? I have my guesses... and at the top of the list is the head of New York’s Vampire community, Helen Lambros. Alexa is right to be leery of Helen!
everafter is a solid introduction to Ms. Stark and Ms. Tam’s everafter world. There was a lot of information to convey to the reader, and even with the bumps I encountered in the beginning, I find that I couldn’t put down the story after a while.
