The Year Mark by Una

I know that I am supposed to be sending Twimom a review from Gikany and I regarding Devil’s Punch.  However, I have been in a rut.  Not the great one that is alluded to in shapeshifter novels, but the blue kind.  I realize that it has been almost a year since my mom passed.  I just reread the article I wrote last year (Bittersweet Mother’s Day).  Hard to believe a year has passed.  Some days it still feels so fresh and other days, it seems like ages I’ve carried/dealt with this grief.

When down in the dumps, I like to reread favorites.  Those books that pull me out of my funk, the one your fingers itch for, the ones that always feel good to read. Currently, I have been rereading the Kate Daniels series. After finishing Tohrment’s book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, I found I had too much in common with the grieving process and needed to escape.  Currently, my dad has been cleaning out my mom’s closet.  He said it was time.  I was supposed to help.  I still can’t fathom it.  Her clothes still carry her perfume.  I didn’t cry while I read Tohr’s book, but I did feel that numbed pain, I was walking in Tohr and John Matthew’s shoes.  So to cheer myself up, I grabbed a sarcastic mercenary gal who stabs first and asks questions later.  Kate always makes me laugh.  I had already reread the Mercy Thompson series earlier this year and since I hadn’t read Kate recently, grabbed for her.  I’m glad I did.
Easter was better this year.  Last year, I can’t remember much of what happened.  I was still too shell shocked to contemplate Easter without my mom.  This year, this Easter I will remember.  Although she was greatly missed, I felt my mom’s presence.  The kids laughed, my munchkin hunted Easter eggs and my cousins “helped” him along.  The sun shined, the air carried the scent of flowers awakening from a long winter’s nap.  It was serene.
However, I should have finished Devil’s Punch and for that I owe you all an apology. Gikany did…so as our usual pace, I am behind, sort of.  However, I should have it to you soon, or you might get Shadow’s Fall since, although due next week, we have that review ready.  Please check back later today – I promise we will have a review for you!  However, I thought I would at least post this.  It is the year mark, well, a little early since Easter is earlier than last year.  I would ask all of you, if you don’t mind, to please grab an old favorite on April 18th, and in memory of my beloved mom, enjoy a laugh, read a book, revisit a beloved character.
So what book do you think you would grab?  You know what I’m reading…what would you reread for comfort?
I wish you all a very fresh, vibrant and joyful spring!

G & U's Top Five Reasons Reviews are Late

We thought we would come clean with all you wonderful blog followers of Twimom so you know when there is a late post or a day without a post….sadly, it’s most likely Gikany and Una’s fault (*Una’s head hangs in shame* mostly me…).   However, we humbly request you take a look at our top 5 reasons on why we tend to be late.
5. Couldn’t access computer since house was tented for termites.
4. The little munchkin thinks the book needs to go outside for some play time….with the puppy.

3. What do you mean reading is not a group activity?  I’m out here with all of you…

2. My cat (or the munchkin) thought the bookmark was a toy – where did I leave off?
And the most common, err, I mean the number one voted excuse is:
1. What day is it again?  What day is it due again?  @#$#@$, that was yesterday!?!?!?
It’s a shame…we should just blame it on the fact that Twimom is three hours ahead of us…. hey… do they do daylight savings time over there?!?!

Being Thankful...

I wish to all of my US readers a very Happy Thanksgiving, and to the rest of you - a peaceful, relaxing day!
I am thankful for many things this holiday season.  First, I am thankful for my family, especially my two children. They fill my heart with such joy, and I am overwhelmed with love for both of them. Although they have been known to drive me bananas, I can’t imagine life without them. Now, excuse me while I go send them to their respective rooms. LOL!
I am thankful to each of you that stops by my blog to read the reviews and posts. I love the comments, tweets and emails. Knowing that I have connected to fellow book-lovers makes me so happy.  Thank you!
I am thankful for my wonderful review team: B, Una, Gikany, Vampbard and Nima. These women have been dear friends for the past few years, and I am so glad that they have agreed to share their thoughts and opinions with you all.  They have given this little blog a chance to grow - going from one to two reviews per week to a review almost every day. Their friendship and support have helped me continue, even when I’ve been overwhelmed or feeling blue. Thank you!
I am thankful for the readers, authors and bloggers that make up the romance community.  You have all touched me in many ways. From the kindness in your hearts to the wonderful words you write. I have found a home and I enjoy it so much. Thank you!

I am thankful for my friends. Both new and old, silver and gold. Even when I've been a distant, grumpy bear, they find ways to lift my spirit and give me hope. Thank you!

What are you especially thankful for this holiday season?
Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Reading!

Life: From the Heart

I don't like to take a lot of personal space on my blog - especially if it has nothing to do with books directly. But I am feeling really overwhelmed right now, and I feel like I'm letting everyone down - but most of all, I'm letting myself down.

When reading my dear friend Marq's blog, she was talking about being in a reading funk, I thought, yes, that's me. But then I realized... it's much bigger than that. I am in a LIFE FUNK. And it's impacting all the parts of my world. In particular, however, it's given me less time and desire to read, which means not being able to keep up with my review schedule. It means less time to stay organized and on top of review books coming in my door. It means less attention to my blog and how it's holding up. It means less time to tweet and blog hop. This all equals stress.

This leads me to a whole other set of issues. My blog. I love my little blog and I don't have great ambitions, however, things have been really slow lately.  The number of daily visitors (not just people who comment) has diminished an unbelievable amount. This makes me so sad.  I am VERY APPRECIATIVE of all of you that continue to stop by... I don't want to seem ungrateful! But, I work so hard on my blog, and it's just not getting out there any more. Part of the problem was a widget for Amazon Associates - it was creating a problem when loading my blog. I know of at least 4 people that could not view my blog at all for a couple months. Who knows how many others it impacted and they never told me. How do I get those people back who maybe left because of problems?  Another problem is my blog is no longer showing up on Google searches. I mean - it will if I get super specific, but if I type in something general like "Review of <insert book title we have reviewed>" I don't show up at all - at least not in the first 10 pages.  I think this all started happening about the time I purchased my own domain name.  *sigh*

I just don't have the expertise or energy to deal with these problems.  I am not a whiner - these are serious concerns and issues for me. But with my life spiraling out of control... How do I make time to deal with problems I don't even know how to describe or quantify?

Anyhow. Thank you for allowing me this little personal space. I have spent too many nights crying. I hope I don't lose you as a reader of my blog. I promise that soon I will find my missing piece (peace?) and get back in the swing of things. Meanwhile, if you know of anyone who has the expertise to deal with my blog problems, please let me know. I'd love to try and get That's What I'm Talking About back up and running in the most effect way possible.

Thank you and Happy Reading!

IAD Reading Challenge FAIL! Part Deux

Hey folks....
Yes, today is the day for my monthly Immortals After Dark book review and discussion.  Once again, I have not read the book. This is now the third month in a row that I have failed to keep up with my own challenge.  I am disappointed in myself and feel like I’ve let down my readers. But the bottom line is that the review load is more than I can handle at the moment. Life is only getting busier, and I honestly have lost the drive to try and keep up.
Also, no one was showing interest any longer in the discussions, so I felt like I was making a huge effort for nothing.
This is why I need to step away from the IAD Reading Challenge. It is no longer fun - and that was the purpose. I hate to admit “defeat,” but in this case, I need to just let it go.
So with “heavy heart” I am announcing the end of the IAD Reading Challenge. I hope that if you started reading the books with me, you finish. I know I still plan to read them - maybe next year?!
I appreciate those that started the challenge with me and all who stopped by and offered comments and/or words of encouragement.  Thank you!
Happy Reading!

Wanted - Murphy

What is it about Murphy’s Law? There is actually a website devoted to his “law” HERE. Gikany and I were over a week ahead of schedule when it came to the books Twimom had sent for us to review. Gikany is still on schedule. I’m behind. Sadly, I am the reason we were unable to bring a couple of reviews to you this week. I need to get eye to eye with this “Murphy” and punch him…dead in the face. Not to mention, that I lost a book. How, I have no idea, I’m incredibly Type A…almost obsessive compulsive! I have since bought said missing book and will review it anyway…because I gave my word to Twimom (even though she said don’t worry about it…I still feel as if I let her down).

When it rains, it pours. I would also like to know the person who came up with this expression. I know some of you may recall the post I did about my mom (here). She, sadly, passed away in April of this year. What you don’t know is that in the last eighteen months I have lost half my immediate family. Twimom knows the pain that cancer brings; she lost a very good friend, a little girl named Molly (post here) a few years ago. Cancer has taken both my grandmothers, my great aunt, my aunt-in-law, two very good family friends, and my mother, in the past eighteen months. I also lost my grandfather this past January to a heart attack. And the most recent death taking place this past Monday – my mom’s mother, my gramma, “Barbar” died from bile duct cancer. With all the grieving I’ve been doing, I feel as if I haven’t been able to grieve for one person before I’m adding to it. I feel as if I should have the time to grieve for each person before I have to grieve for another.
So here is a post for today, something to post to make up to Twimom because I feel like such a flake. You know, I think we should all get together and wrangle up Murphy (I bet he is the one that came up with “when it rains it pours”). Sadly though, I bet he discovered these tidbits of wisdom through experience. Maybe the same experiences I’m trudging through now. Maybe leaving him in peace is better…

But I do promise you all wonderful and faithful readers…I will get ahead again. Gikany and I are plotting more interesting reviews and bringing books that you all might not be familiar with. As you know, we are huge Patricia Briggs fans…we just might have a few more of her earlier novels to tempt you with. Not to mention, I have a few books that I’m pressing (aka beating Gikany over the head with) her to read so we can bring the reviews to you.

However, I do want to say thank you. Several of you have started commenting on posts that Gikany and I bring to you as well as B, Nima and Vampbard. Thank you for your feedback and your comments. We enjoy them and, as it helps Twimom, it helps us as well. I know I especially love the opportunity for discussion! On behalf of all of us at That’s What I’m Talking About hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

First Days

Yesterday was the first day of school here in my town.  My boy is in second grade, and this is "old hat" for the two of us. But it was also the first day of kindergarten for my baby girl. That was a big step for both of us.

I don't talk a lot about my family on my blog, so let me give you a little background. My girl is my baby. Although born full-term, she was a peanut and had a number of minor medical concerns in her little life.  At 5-1/2 years old, she is only 29 pounds. For those that don't know, that is the "average" weight of a girl who is less than 3 years old.  And height-wise, she's not much better.  She is a peanut.  She's my baby.

I worried, would she be able to carry her backpack? Would she be able to get up on the toilet? Will she hold the line up trying to go up and down the stairs? And the biggest concern... would she be able to get on the bus?

I got her on the bus this morning and didn't shed a tear. I drove behind the bus up to her school so I could take a photo of her getting off the bus. When she got off the bus, she hung her head and walked by me, not acknowledging me at all. But not in that "mom, you are embarrassing me" kind of way.  It was in her "I'm sad" way.  I stood and watched as she got about half-way to the school and then stopped.

My baby girl (back to me) and her giant backpack.
I walked over to her and noticed a tear in her eye. That is when I lost it. I cried for my baby and for me. I wasn't ready for her to get so big.  I held her hand (and didn't let her see me crying), and walked her to her teacher.  She gave me a hug and a kiss. I walked away. I spotted friends and went for a hug. And I cried.

Later, she got off the bus and played with her friends. She told me in great detail all about her first day and how much fun it was. I'm glad it all went well, because I worried.

It's going to be a bit strange not to have her around, tugging at my shirt, asking for help. I will miss having her with me during the day.  But she is a big girl now. I love her and am proud of my kindergartener!

Tomorrow's post: Woo-hoo! I have free time again!  (just kidding - about the post, still happy about free time!)

What I'm Doing on my Summer Vacation

Isn't summer supposed to be about relaxing and having fun?  Sure, I've got down the "having fun" part, but relaxing?! I think I'm busier now than during the school year when I'm working 2-3 days per week!

And reading -- It's not happening!! Take the book I'm reading now, The Lady of the Storm by Kathryne Kennedy. I am really enjoying it; at about the halfway mark, it's reading like a 4 Star book. However, instead of reading about 50 pages per day, I'm reading 20 pages. I wanted to have the review for today and I'm not even close to finishing it!  I blame it on the later sunset - more time playing outside. But honestly, I just don't know where the time goes.

Falling behind in one book means somewhere, someplace, another review has to give. With so many great books coming up - ones that I WANT to read, even if I don't have them for "official review" - I just don't know what to do!  I see my IAD Reading Challenge being axed again this month.  Does that make me a bad person? I can't even keep up with my own reading challenge.  *sigh*

But I have accomplished some good things this summer.

The big news...  I HAVE MY OWN DOMAIN NAME!  That's right, you can now find That's What I'm Talking About at www.twimom227.com  NO "blogspot" any longer.  I'm very excited about this! If you have my button on your blog, please notice ... an updated "button" with the new domain name is available.

Photobucket

I've also been running several contests. Currently I've got two great giveaways going on:

Open until July 30: What a Goddess Wants by Stephanie Julian ... enter HERE
Open until Aug. 5: The Magic of Lavender ebook by Cate Masters ... enter HERE

And next week, I'll have even more books to giveaway, so please stop in again!

PhotobucketLastly... AAD is coming in less than 2 weeks! For those not familiar, AAD = Authors After Dark Convention.  AAD 2011 is going to be in Philadelphia and I will be attending from August 10 to 14. I am SO excited for this opportunity to be away from my kids for 4 days meet several great authors and fellow bloggers. I'm still at a loss as to what to wear to the Steampunk Ball. I am not a "costume" gal and I don't want to spend a lot of money on new clothing. Any suggestions on pieces to purchase that I can later integrate into my "everyday" wardrobe?  I'd be most appreciative!  And I'm considering finally getting that tattoo I designed almost 20 years ago... do I tell my family first?! I've already been reassured by Ava Riley, Marq, and Ferishia that they will hold my hand if I do get one.

So life has been busy and fun... summer is in full swing and I'm tackling it head on.  But there are consequences.  Now... maybe I'll go read for a while!  What have you been up to this summer? What are you planning to do before fall arrives?

Growing Pains of a Little Blog

Hello all my wonderful visitors. I want to thank EVERYONE who has come by to read my reviews and posts, the authors that have participated in interviews and guest posts, the publishers and authors that have donated books and swag for giveaways, and everyone that has left me comments - I LOVE comments.
I have really enjoyed the past 18 months of blogging and I hope you all have enjoyed visiting. I loved watching my blog blossom and grow, and I think the best part is meeting so many new people - other bloggers, readers, authors and publicists. I cannot wait to go to AUTHORS AFTER DARK 2011 in Philly where I will meet so many of you in person!
I’ve noticed for the past several months, my blog as become a bit stagnant. I’ve been up and down one or two followers, and comments have pretty much disappeared. I know that I’ve been crazy busy, but I felt like I was still dedicating a good amount of time to the blog. I am not looking to make my blog the biggest, but I would love to continue to grow and provide my visitors with the best blog I can.
With that I’m reaching out to you... blog readers, fellow bloggers, authors, publicists... I need your input! I want to know what do you look for from blogs that you enjoy and frequent...  What does it take for you to "follow" a blog?

Do you like long or short reviews? Are the number of reviews important? Do you prefer a number rating or letter grade?
How important is it to have blog posts that are NOT reviews - you know the fun weekly spots or discussions about books, genres, reading, etc that are not reviews? Do you visit sites solely because they feature contests and giveaways?
How important is the look of the blog? What features other than the posts do you enjoy on a blog?
What about the name of the blog and branding? I’ve been thinking about this long and hard... When I joined twitter and then created a blog, I just picked an online handle that fit at the time. (For background on Twimom227, read HERE.) I didn’t expect to have my wonderful book blog and now I’m thinking about what might be better. There are so many great and clever blog names and personas out there... When you hear “Twimom227” or “That’s What I’m Talking About” do you think BOOK REVIEW BLOG?!
Finally, to those that blog... what are the pros and cons of having your own domain name? Blogger vs. WordPress? What are the other alternatives?
I really would love feedback from you!  If you would like to help me, but don’t want to leave a comment here, you can email me at twimom227 at gmail dot com.
THANK YOU in advance for your time and feedback!
Happy Reading!  Jen

Bittersweet Mother's Day

Twimom is on vacation and she has insanely left me holding the fort, so to speak. At first I must say I was really nervous and hoping there were plenty of books we’ve reviewed so I wouldn’t have much work. I’ve had a lot on my plate (like most of us working moms)…my little bio on the “about us” page is just a very small snippet of what I do. I have two jobs (thank you to the economy) and volunteer regularly. I have a very young son, a husband, and my parents who live just down the street. Check that, my parent.

Twimom has graciously told me to blog as I see fit. *shakes head* I am sure this is not what she intended. I know Gikany and I are, or at least we try to be light-hearted. Reading is a pleasure and reviews shouldn’t be drudgery, but an extension of that pleasure, especially if we are trying to share the wealth of fabulous books with you. I love to talk about books, this love of reading and discussion came from my upbringing. My mom and dad love to read. Most importantly they love sharing books…loaning them and them discussing them. The passion and thrill for reading came from my parents and I hope to plant this seed in my son.

I’m sure you can see where this is going. It’s been foreshadowed. *gotta love the literary terms* My mother passed away last month…April 18th, 2011. She lost her battle with melanoma. I never thought she would be gone so soon. I loaned her The Host by Stephanie Meyer…she hadn’t finished it yet…we haven’t been able to have our discussion. In honor of Mother’s Day, I want to tell you about her. My mother was diagnosed eight years ago. The first five years after her diagnosis and surgery were fine. But at the milestone, the five year check-up, it was back. There were new treatments available and that gave her another year, year and a half. They weren’t bad, she was still able to do and be her active self. This past year and a half, though, were not so good. Every four month check-up, they found more cancer which meant more surgeries and continuation of a treatment we all feared wasn’t working. Then, last October, they found yet another tumor. One that was inoperable in her leg and it was confirmed, the treatment was not working. This was the beginning of the worst part of the fight. They decided to try a new experimental treatment. Her pain was inhuman and yet, she fought. My mom was brave, stubborn and amazing.

Even though she was unable to move much due to the pain the doctors could not control, she still loved to play with her little grandson, “Munchkin”, my son that was born sixteen months ago. She made up songs and stories for him. I think he could sense her pain and yet he LOVED listening to his Nana. I hope she planted the same seed in him that was planted in me over thirty years ago. Munchkin loves to grab a book and have someone…anyone read to him. Any book he picks up must be read and reread several times before he picks up another. This is something I treasure. One of the pictures I have posted is my mom with my nephew and niece (the other is my mom with Munchkin a few hours after he was born). They too have a love for reading. I like to think my mom helped plant that passion.

Legacies are funny things. You tend to think they are something tangible, something with substance. I think the best legacy my mom left was passion: a passion for reading; the using of one’s imagination and creativity to make the world a little better place or at least make it bearable. I miss her. I miss her something terrible but I know she is no longer in pain, no longer unable to do the things she loved. I also know that my son has gained a guardian angel. An angel that will kick his momma’s rear if he goes out in the sun without his hat and sunscreen!

Please note, we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled fun tomorrow. I just needed to express this, maybe so I can heal. Maybe, just maybe, this will encourage you, if you haven’t, to pick up a book and read to a child. My mom was a teacher and when she retired, due to her health, she volunteered with a group that read and brought books to underprivileged kids. My mom has planted the seed in so many, let’s continue her work.

Christmas Time

I can't believe it's almost December 25! It is true... the older you get, the faster time seems to move.  Jobs, family time, holiday parties, sporting events, school activities... They all crowd up this busy time of year.  When I was younger, it seemed like Christmas vacation (it was still called that way back then) lasted FOREVER! It was filled with days outside playing in the snow, trying out the new toys, just hanging out with my family, enjoying TV specials (no DVDs or OnDemand back then). I think back to that time with amazement. Then I wonder, am I providing my children with the same great memories? Or am I too busy with "stuff?" As I read my books, spend time online, run to the stores,  text on my phone, am I forgetting to just slow down and spend quality time with the family?

We have one more week until vacation time begins. My goal is to slow down and give more time back to my family. I want to create magical childhood memories for my kids. And I'd love to get back a little of the magic for myself.  What about you? What are your plans for the holiday season?

Falling Behind

BEHIND.

I hate feeling like this. I don't like it when I can't maintain my carefully planned schedules. I hate when clutter infiltrates my life. I feel overwhelmed when I have so much on my to do list that I need a separate list just to keep track of what isn't yet on my to do list.

It's not even that I'm overly busy, but sometimes life just gets in the way of best intentions.

I have worked hard in the past 11 months to create a blog of which I am really proud. I have enjoyed the ups and downs, the growing pains and the successes. I've read countless new books, discovered several new authors, and found numerous new bloggers and tweeps, many of which I am happy to call friend.

Lately, I have fallen behind in my reading and blogging. I can blame work - I've had to put in an extra day each week for the past month (my only day I have off to myself). I can blame family - I'm a wife and a mom of two young monsters, and we have a busy schedule. I can blame the holidays - Thanksgiving, time off from school, Christmas, parties, shopping, cards, etc.

But the bottom line is that although all of those factors contribute to the craziness in my life, I realize that sometimes I just need a "time out." Even though I enjoy reading, I found lately that I prefer to be visiting with friends and socializing rather than reading, and I only have so many hours in the day. However, my wonderful little blog is being a bit neglected.   For that, I am a sad.

I apologize to my wonderful readers that come to me for reviews, opinions, interviews and book talk.  I hope that after the holidays are over I will be back up to speed and putting out 2 or so reviews per week.  I know you all have big hearts and hopefully will stick with me as I try to figure out a happy medium in my life.

Thanks and Happy Reading!

The Story of A First Gift

Welcome to a special post here at That's What I'm Talking About.  Today, I am participating in a special Blog Hop sponsored by author Liz Fichera. I hope you enjoy my story.

Lean in really close... I have a secret to share. *whispers* I’m going to cheat - just between you and me - this isn’t really about a first gift. Because to be honest I cannot remember the first gift my husband gave me. But I do remember the gift he gave me when I was pregnant with our first child. That counts - right?!
Back in August 2003, I was 7 months pregnant with our first child. I truly LOVED being pregnant. But, things were a bit chaotic.  I was working full time, and my husband was traveling - gone 2-4 nights per week.  We were in the middle of a MAJOR kitchen remodel project.  The entire kitchen and dining room were completely torn apart. We had a make-shift kitchen in our family room - it included a card table with a college-sized microwave, a mini-fridge below, a box full of paper products and a few dozen pantry items. Not to mention our full-sized solid wood dining room table set was placed in the middle of the family room along with our family room furniture.  It was crowded!  We were also working on the nursery and all of the fun things that come with the first kiddo.
On August 22, 2003, we celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary.  I wasn’t expecting much for a few reasons... First: we had a baby on the way and that was a big expense. Second: we were remodeling our home - another big expense. Third: my husband isn’t known for his gift giving abilities. He’s more of a sweet card and take-me-out-to-dinner kind of guy. (Although I’ve trained him since and he now gives me gift certificates to the spa. He’s learned well!)
So when he showed up that evening with a small box, I was a bit surprised. It was a jewelry sized box... what could it be? I hadn’t dropped any hints for jewelry, or any gifts for that matter.  When I opened the box my heart melted.  I found inside a beautiful silver locket with a note that said “On the 5th anniversary, you are supposed to give silverware. I’m giving you silver that you can wear.”  I started to cry. I blame the pregnancy hormones, but it was so incredibly sweet and such an amazing surprise.  And it re-enforced why I love that man so much!
My son at one week old, holding onto my "first gift."

I hope you enjoyed my FIRST GIFTS story. Be sure to check out the other bloggers participating in author Liz Fichera’s special blog hop. Click HERE to find out more.

Why I love Fantasy (aka Paranormal Romance)

I have always gravitated towards all things fantasy and sci-fi. I started watching the original Star Trek with my dad at a very young age. We also loved Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, and later Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Stargate SG-1. I watched movies like The Last Starfighter, Tron, and Enemy Mine.  I saw the original Star Wars movie when I was 7. We saw it in the theater 3 times and that’s a lot for “back then.”  My reading tastes have also followed suit. Books that I love include Dune, Jurassic Park, and all stories by Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett.
My mom and most of my friends never understood how I could enjoy something that “isn’t real.” But I argue that life is too hard and “real” at times not to enjoy some reverie.
What I love about fantasy:
  • Anything goes and it's believable.
Take a look at one of my all time favorite books, Dune.  There are giant worms that live on a desert planet. Their waste is the drug of choice in the entire known universe. It’s an absurd idea when I say it like that, but in the book, it’s so real and exciting.
  •  Social issues can be addressed in sometimes sneaky ways.
The science fiction film genre has long served as a useful vehicle for "safely" discussing controversial topical issues and often providing thoughtful social commentary on potential unforeseen future issues. Presentation of issues that are difficult or disturbing for an audience, can be made more acceptable when they are explored in a future setting or on a different, earth-like world. (taken from Wikipedia) Take a look at Pixar’s hit Wall-E... A seemingly simple futuristic cartoon for kids. But the adults all know what’s going on - it’s a commentary on obesity, laziness and pollution. There are even underlying themes of over-mechanization (and echo’s of Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey).
  •  Escapism
Come on! There are so many great places you can go and don't have to deal with real life. Science fiction and fantasy films can take us far away: Aliens, Star Trek(s), Avatar.  They can thrill us at home either now or in the future: Independence Day, The Fifth Element, Mad Max. They can be very serious: Children of Men, V for Vendetta, I am Legend. And they can make us laugh: Running Man, Galaxy Quest, Men in Black.
So how does this translate into my love of Paranormal Romance (PNR) and Urban Fantasy (UF)?
I point to all three of my comments above. It works because vampires can exist and be sexy descendants of an alien race (Midnight Breed series by Lara Adrian). The idea of living with a true love for a very long time and always be happy is acceptable (The Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer for one example of many).  I can believe in soul mates (like the True Mate series by Teresa D’Amario or Breeds series by Lora Leigh). Shifters can be environmentally conscious and save the earth from humans and others (Psy/Changeling series by Nalini Singh). I love when “mates” can sense something is wrong with one another. I love how characters can smell emotions and lies. And in PNR, characters, even virgins, can have mind-blowing sex and out of this world orgasms (sometimes just from a single touch). Anything can go and it doesn’t matter - it’s fantasy.
But most of all... I can escape.
Why do you read PNR or UF? If you don’t, do you enjoy science fiction or fantasy films?

Project Playroom: A Success in Redesign

I do not watch HGTV. I do not possess hidden design talents. BUT... my mom does! So when I realized that my kids have outgrown the pale yellows and blues and the Winnie-the-Pooh design of their playroom, I turned to Mom for help.  She spent a week with us and helped me update the playroom.
Here is what it looked like at the start of the week:
This was originally my first child’s nursery. He’s now almost 7. It has been the playroom for the past 4.5 years and was filled with toys that the kids have out-grown.  I wanted to add large desks so each kid could have his/her own space to play/color now, but could eventually use for homework, etc. I wanted bright colors, but be able to stand up over the course of 10 years and not get “too kiddie.”
We settled on a lovely aqua (think Little Mermaid) and chocolate brown. Here we are painting the walls. (The true colors do not come across in these photos, but you get the idea).

Originally we were going to do two walls in each color, but when Mom got distracted and started on the third wall in aqua, we went with it. She used her HGTV expertise and came up with the contrast line on the aqua walls.
But we still needed something to liven up the walls. I found these surfboard and sand pail wall decals that went on with water and come off just as easily. (Note: we live 1/2 mile from the ocean, so beach theme is appropriate.)
Next we got these GREAT desks from IKEA (who doesn’t love that place?!) The desk space is massive and deep, so plenty of space to build LEGO towers and set them aside when it’s time to work on something else. Plus - look at all the storage space. Each kid now has a place for his/her stuff. AND - bonus play space UNDER the desks. Oh, they LOVE this space. We installed little touch lights under the desks.
We then used a special, iron-based “magnetic” base paint and created these “magnet boards” in the contrast color above each desk. They aren’t super strong, but will hold the latest masterpiece!
Finally, we updated the light fixture (the old one was from the 1960s).

And here it is... the final product with all of the “stuff” back in its place:
Boy's Desk

Girl playing under her desk (magnetic board not complete)

Girl's desk & existing bookshelves

The "brown" wall with existing kitchen set
My mom is the BEST and I am so grateful she was able to come help with this project. She also made dinners, did laundry and watched the kids while here. I love my mom and am thankful for her visit.
