Review: Undone by Sara Humphreys

Undone
Author: Sara Humphreys
Release Date: May 7, 2013
Publisher: Sourcebooks
Amoveo Legend #4
ISBN: #978-1402258527
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): Paperback (288 pgs), e-book
Book Source: Publisher

About the book:
Party girl Marianna Coltari is an unmated pureblood Amoveo who wants nothing to do with the ongoing war that took her father’s life and continues to consume her brother, Dante’s. But when she is targeted by one of the clans, she has little choice but to run and hide in a cabin with Pete Castro, a retired cop from her brother’s security firm. There, Pete and Marianna explore an intensifying attraction between them until danger is at the door and there’s no escape.

What G & U are talking about:
The fourth novel in the Amoveo Legend series is Undone.  There are a few surprises in store for those that have started the series from the beginning.  Gikany and Una continue to enjoy this series, even though there are noticeable differences in store.

Undone begins a few months after the last novel Untamed ended with a cliffhanger.  The council has been split; the Purists have created their own faction, taking most of the original council with them.  Now, the Purists are actively seeking pure blooded Amoveos to join them, especially pure-blooded and unmated females.

Although the plot of the Purists is quite dark, Gikany and Una feel this series continues to be an “on-the-lighter-side” read.  We were surprised by how elaborate and secure the Purist compound was, but it gives weight to them and shows that this faction has been growing for some time, waiting for the opportunity to reveal themselves.  What is surprising is how stratified their group is, and we wonder how it will continue considering how Undone ends.

One of the great surprises in the novel is the existence of other “otherworldlies”.  Gikany and Una have no recollection of vampires, demons, ghosts or the like being referred to in the previous novels.  At the beginning of Undone, they are not introduced, but shown as fully integrated into the world.  Our heroine, Marianna is hanging out at her friend’s club.  Turns out, her friend, Olivia is a vampire and it is a club that caters to them.  Suffice to say, it was a bit of culture shock for us, but we found the inclusion interesting.  We especially loved Olivia and look forward to seeing her in the spin-off book, Tall, Dark, and Vampire.  Equally adorable were the hellhounds – we wish we could adopt one.

One of the reasons we enjoy the Amoveo Legend series is the characters.  We enjoy the varied characters and especially the personalities of the couples as they find their way to accepting their mates.  In Undone, we have the chance to revisit with Kerry (heroine from Untouched) to see how she has grown into her ability and truly come into her own.  She is a stronger and more independent woman because of her mating with Dante.  However, Marianna and Pete had moments that rubbed us the wrong way.  We felt there was an instant where Pete truly stepped over the line and was an overbearing caveman.  What shocked us more is that Marianna goes along with it (not that she had much choice) but that Dante, her older brother, did not seem bothered by it.  Now maybe there is a back-story (novella/excerpt short) there that we are missing.  But although Pete and Marianna make a lovely couple, we felt there were moments when Pete needed a reality check.  In the end, Pete and Marianna found the balance that all couples need and their reunion is touching.

If you are interested in a slightly different shifter mythology, give the Amoveo Legends series a try and hope you like Undone as much as we did.

Review: Untamed by Sara Humphreys

Untamed
Author: Sara Humphreys
Release Date: Nov. 6, 2012
Publisher: Sourcebooks
The Amoveo Legend #3
ISBN: #978-1402258497
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): Paperback (320 pgs), e-book
Book Source: Publisher

About the book:
The Amoveo are an ancient race who've lived secretly among humans for thousands of years. They are beautiful and incredibly strong but their race is extremely fragile--each has until the age of 30 to find their soul mate, before their bodies start to die a slow, painful death.

Layla Nickelsen has spent her life running from a mate she didn't choose, until William Fleury finally confronts her. Normally stoic and unemotional, William finds himself befuddled by Layla: his growing feelings for her and his driving need to protect her. And Layla has to admit that William might be everything she's always wanted after all...

What G & U are talking about:
Untamed is the third installment in the Amoveo Legend.  Gikany and Una feel it is the best book so far in the series and eagerly look toward the next books with the cliffhanger ending of Untamed.

The story begins with our uptight hero William (he makes Cameron from Ferris Buller's Day Off look spontaneous and flexible) trying to reach his elusive mate in the dream realm. However, Layla is not like our previous hybrids.  She knows what she is and, because of her upbringing, has absolutely NO interest in an amoveo mate...especially an arrogant, three-piece suit wearing, stick-in-the-mud William.  However as the story progresses, they find that fate may know exactly what it is doing bringing the stubborn and free spirited Layla and stoic William together.

The most engaging and enthralling aspect of Untamed is the struggle between William learning to let Layla be her own person and Layla having the courage to let someone in. Although there is quite of lot of yes and no, two steps forward four steps back... it still moves and is not as tedious as most novels would be.  The couple, through their dancing, grow both as individuals and as a couple.  There is a true sense of growth and maturation as well as give and take between them. We really respect the pace of their courtship along with the mystery of the person who threatened Layla's childhood home.

The last and most wonderful aspect Untamed is our shocking cliffhanger ending.  Although the couple's story arc is resolved (quite wittily and satisfactorily), the overall story are of the Amoveo and the Purists explodes.  Gikany and Una cannot wait to read the next novel, just to find out where the battle lines are drawn.  During the course of the ending of the novel... we are introduced to several other characters.  We have our suspicions of whose story is next... but we aren't going to spoil you with our speculations.  Gikany and Una would rather have you catch up to us and leave us a message.

While researching for this review, we discovered a novella that occurs during this novel's time period.  Needless to say, we are going to download and read it.  Please look for our review of it later, as well as the next feature length novel in the Amoveo Legend series.  If you are looking for a very unique paranormal romance series, you should really pick up on this series, it's definitely worth it. But do yourself a huge favor, do not start with Untamed, but begin with the first novel Unleashed.

Untouched

Amoveo Legend #2
ISBN: #9781402258466
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): Paperback (320 pgs), e-book
Book Source: Publisher

About the book:
From the outside, Kerry Smithson appears to have it all -- beauty, brains, money, and fame. However, Kerry harbors a crippling secret. One touch will tell her your deepest secrets and cause her mind-numbing pain. Adept at avoiding even the lightest of touches, isolation and loneliness has become her way of life. However, her world is turned upside down from the moment she encounters the disarmingly handsome Dante Coltari. Little does she know that Dante harbors a secret of his own. One that would change the course of their lives and intertwine their fates, forever.

What G & U are talking about:
Untouched was a well-woven and nicely paced story.  Gikany and Una enjoyed this second novel in the Amoveo Legacy.  It has some humor and very touching moments.  The action and mystery were a pleasant addition to the romance and we are already discussing whose story is next.
Dante and Kerry make a wonderful couple.  They are able to laugh at not only themselves but also each other.  There is only one moment that we found frustrating: Dante goes through the mating ceremony without telling Kerry.  Once complete, she asks him what he said…and she finds out they are mated.  This really bothered us. It does, however, go with her snarky comments throughout the story that refer to Dante as a Neanderthal.  We just felt that Kerry should have been a little more upset, or angry about his actions.
We enjoyed seeing Malcom and Sam again and enjoyed their part in this story.  Although we are not sure of the next pairing, we hope to see more of Malcom, Sam, Kerry and Dante in the next book.  We would love to see Kerry meet Dante’s family.  We would have enjoyed seeing it here, but can understand that it wouldn’t have been able to be inserted seamlessly.
While looking back at the overall story arc, we thought it may have dragged a little, but we still enjoyed the story.  The twist of the “big bad” and the involvement of some of the new characters were interesting.  The mythology is still very fascinating and enjoyable.  Although the ending is a bit vague and wide open, we do look forward to the next novel in this Amoveo series.

Amoveo Legend #1
ISBN: #978-1402258435
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): Paperback (320 pgs), e-book

About the book:
What if you suddenly discovered your own powers were beyond anything you'd ever imagined...
Samantha Logan's childhood home had always been a haven, but everything changed while she was away. She has a gorgeous new neighbor, Malcolm, who introduces her to the amazing world of the dream-walking, shapeshifting Amoveo clans...but what leaves her reeling with disbelief is when he tells her she's one of them...
And shock turns to terror as Samantha falls prey to the deadly enemy determined to destroy the Amoveo, and the only chance she has to come into her true powers is to trust in Malcolm to show her the way...

What G & U are talking about:
Unleashed is the debut novel of Sara Humphreys and the first in the new Amoveo Legacy series.  This is a new take on shapeshifters and a blend of intriguing urban fantasy with rich romantic overtures.
In general, we enjoyed the novel.  The balance of the novel is more weighted towards romance and less urban fantasy/paranormal, but it was still quite an enjoyable read.  The world that Ms. Humphreys has built is unique and fascinating and we look forward to finding out more about this ancient race of shapeshifters.  It is difficult to discuss too much of the novel without giving portions away, so we apologize if this review is a tad brief.
As with many newly published artists, it does have the feel of a “first” book but it does not detract from the overall enjoyment of the story.  Samantha and Malcolm’s story was enthralling.  The mystery was not entirely surprising, but it did have some interesting twists and neatly set up the next book without sacrificing the happily ever after.  We found Unleashed to be a quick read.  The writing flowed, albeit a little overly romanticized at times, but with vivid imagery.  We were easily able to immerse ourselves into this world.  The character development was a little rough, but not a distraction or detriment to overall enjoyment of the storyline.
We look forward to reading the next book in this new and fresh series, Untouched due out in April of 2012.  If you are looking for a fluffy romantic story in an intriguing urban fantasy world, try Unleashed.
