Review: Soul Stealer by Anna Hackett

Soul Stealer
Author: Anna Hackett
Release Date: Feb. 4, 2013
Publisher: self-published
Anomaly Trilogy #3
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): e-book
Book Source: Author

About the book:
She just wants her life back. After being kidnapped and forced to kill by a vicious crime lord, Cate Hartmann is now a killer with an addiction to stealing souls. On the island sanctuary of Haven, surrounded by other anomalies with secret abilities, she fights to recover. But only one man calms the dark storm inside and makes her believe she can be whole again…Dr. Gage Walker.

Scientist Gage Walker has spent a decade helping anomalies. But every day, he’s haunted by his previous job for the CIA—where he crossed far too many boundaries and hurt so many anomalies. Including his brother. He vows he won’t fail again and will do everything he can to heal Cate—including fighting his attraction to her.

But when the crime lord comes after Cate again, it’s a race against time to find out why he wants her. Amidst the danger, Gage and Cate drawn to each other, even as they fear that one wrong step will send her hurtling back into the depths of her soul stealing addiction..

What G & U are talking about:
Soul Stealer is the final book in the Anomaly trilogy by Anna Hackett.  Gikany and Una feel that was the perfect ending to this very fascinating paranormal romance novella trilogy.

This final book is about the most compelling and horrific ability - soul stealing.  Cate unfortunately is not only able to steal a person's soul by absorbing it, killing them in the process, but the absorption of a soul is addicting to Cate.  In the last novella, Mind Raider, Cal and Mara along with Sean and Bay rescued Cate from the evil Levin.  In Soul Stealer we find out that Levin had much more interest in Cate than just using her to punish his enemies permanently.

Gage, the doctor on the island of Haven, is dedicated to helping give the anomalies assistance so that they may come to a balance with their abilities.  When he meets Cate, he is absolutely captivated with her.  Although their relationship moves fast (it has to since it is only a novella), it is passionate, compelling and heartwarming.

Soul Stealer ties up the complete story arc nicely.  It left Gikany and Una with a profound sense of hope and feeling that everyone is deserving of a second chance.  This is a great little trilogy.  We recommend the Anomaly trilogy to anyone who wants a very fun and steamy escape to the day.

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Anna Hackett

Hello Readers! Today I bring you romance author Anna Hackett. Anna loves action movies, sci-fi shows, short stories, writing her own romantic adventures, her wonderful husband and her little man.

As a teenager, she raided her mother's romances and her father's action adventure books, so no surprise that her stories combine both. She especially loves reading and writing short stories—the perfect intense read to fit into a busy lifestyle—and teaches the writing workshop, Short Story, Big Impact. When she isn't wearing boots and a hard hat, she's at her computer drinking too much Diet Coke and working on her stories.

In celebration of her newest release, Soul Stealer, Anna is here to talk about her favorite comfort reads. In addition, Anna is hosting a GIVEAWAY for a $25 Amazon Gift Card and 3 Carina Press ebooks of the winner’s choice (details below). Please help me welcome Anna to That’s What I’m Talking About

Top 5 Comfort Reads

Reading reduces stress faster than any other method of relaxation. Studies have shown that reading reduces stress by 68%! Just six minutes of silent reading lowers the heart rate and relieves tension.

I was a reader long before I was a writer. A voracious, read-whatever-I-could-get-my-hands-on-reader. I worked my way through my mother’s Mills and Boons, my aunt’s collection of Nora Roberts and even my father’s action thrillers.

I’ve found that while reading is always a pleasurable, relaxing experience, it is also my escape from the day-to-day pressures of real life. We’re all busy and we all have our ups and downs, and I think it’s wonderful that reading a great story can whisk us away and give us a little downtime.

Now, for me, that doesn’t mean I like a slow read, just the opposite! I like my reading fast, furious, action-packed and always breathtaking. I especially love my action to come with a big hit of romance. And of course, only happy endings are allowed!

Today I thought I’d share five of my comfort reads. Those books I always come back to…especially on a bad day!  Ooh, I feel a little like I’m flashing something private…or baring a little of my soul (-:

Okay, here they are:

Naked in Death by JD Robb – a tough heroine, a to-die-for hero and a thrilling murder mystery. I always love being whisked away to futuristic New York.

Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh – Ms. Singh knows how to write emotion and all her Psy/Changeling books grab me. I love this alternate, futuristic world of changelings, psychics and humans.

Alpha and Omega by Patricia Briggs – this is the kick off novella to the series of the same name and I love all the books in this paranormal series. Something so compelling about the hero and heroine in these stories.

Contest by Matthew Reilly – this one is a straight out, non-stop action thriller with aliens. No romance but there is a great father-daughter relationship.

Time to Die by Wilbur Smith – another action thriller but this has a romance and I love every second of this African adventure.

So there they are, stories I’ve read more times than I’m willing to admit! And what about the readers of That’s What I’m Talking About? Want to bare a little of your soul and share your favorite comfort read?

Thanks for sharing with us today, Anna! You can find her at the usual places: Anna Hackett – Website | Blog | Facebook | Twitter | Goodreads. Her latest novella, SOUL STEALER, the final book in The Anomaly Trilogy, is out now. Here’s more about Anna’s latest release...

Review: Mind Raider by Anna Hackett

Mind Raider
Author: Anna Hackett
Release Date: Oct. 10, 2012
Publisher: Self-Published
Anomaly Trilogy #2
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Novella
Format(s): E-book
Book Source: Author

About the book:
Never hide, never cower and live by your own rules.

Life has taught mind raider Mara Ross to never let anyone break her. Especially not the crime lord who tortured her for her ability to control other people's minds. But now her former tormentor has kidnapped another woman and Mara will do anything to save her—including joining forces with a dark, powerful man who is more dangerous than anything Mara's faced before.

The CIA's experiments left Callahan with lethal powers he must control with every inch of his will. As the leader of Haven, a sanctuary for anomalies, he stays focused and alone...until Mara blazes into his life. Cal knows he must keep his distance from the fiery mind raider because she threatens his control...and if his control breaks, people die.

On a mission deep in the wilds of Indonesia, desire explodes between Cal and Mara. But as the two wounded souls are drawn to each other, terrible secrets from Cal's past threaten to drive them apart.

What G & U are talking about:
Mind Raider is the second novella in the Anomaly Trilogy.  It is a fresh and interesting urban fantasy world.  Although in novella format, the story is pulsating with passionate romance and a fairly engaging plot.  Gikany and Una enjoyed this latest installment.

The story centralizes around Cal, the leader of the Haven, a refuge area for anomalies, and Mara, the Mind Raider we met in the previous novella, Time Thief.  It seems the attraction between Cal and Mara started long ago when they first met, but due to current circumstances, they find themselves forced to be together….

Gikany and Una have enjoyed the Anomaly Trilogy so far.  Although the only book left, Soul Stealer, is coming, we hope that possibly this could be a feature length series.  The mythology and world is fascinating and exciting.  With the connections of Cal’s past, a new big bad could form and take us on other adventures.  Part of the reason this series strikes a chord with us is the allusion to the X-Men series – a comic world that is near and dear to Una’s heart.

If you enjoy a fast paced, thrilling passionate romance, please pick up The Anomaly Trilogy, it is a fun weekend read.

Review: Time Thief by Anna Hackett

Time Thief
Author: Anna Hackett
Release Date: Aug. 14, 2012
Publisher: Self-published
The Anomaly Trilogy #1
Genre: Paranormal Romance, novella
Format(s): E-book
Book Source: Author

About the book:
Hunted for her ability to steal time, Bay North lives a life on the run. All she wants is to make the crime lord who slaughtered her family pay. But now he's set the ultimate hunter on her trail and Bay will need all her skills to carry out her revenge and survive.

Ex-Navy SEAL Sean Archer saw his team killed by a time thief in Afghanistan and came back a broken man. He's made a dark deal with a criminal to hunt down all time thieves and now Sean's tracked the wily Bay North to Denver where he plans to rid the world of one more dangerous mutation.

But during a shootout, hunter and hunted find themselves depending on each other for survival. Joining forces to exact payback by stealing a priceless treasure, their reluctant alliance shatters both their defenses. Can Bay find the courage to trust? And can Sean convince a woman honed in revenge that she can have more than vengeance, blood and killing?

What G & U are talking about:
Time Thief is the first e-book novella in a new trilogy – The Anomaly Trilogy.  Although too short, it was an overall enjoyable read with a fascinating mythology.

Gikany and Una enjoyed this fast paced paranormal romance/urban fantasy novella.  The premise is promising with the existence in our world of anomalies – people with a mutated gene that allows them power.  Bay North, our heroine, has the ability to steal time.  Sean, our hero, asks Bay about this power:

“Time just stops.”  His men had looked like this.  He’d looked like this.  Lambs to the fucking slaughter.

“Time’s still progressing, just slowly.  Or we’re moving quicker.  I don’t really know.”

The Anomaly Trilogy is almost homage to X-Men, but it’s different enough that the allusion didn’t come to mind until we started writing the review. The ramifications of having people in the world who possess a mutated gene are exciting.  The existence of the anomalies and our hero’s fight to not be controlled and used had us incredibly intrigued. The interplay between Bay and Sean is compelling in Time Thief.  We enjoyed the fact that Bay and Sean had much in common.  Yet, considering they had been enemies for the past months, their overall relationship seemed to move really quickly.

In general, everything seemed to move so quickly. Gikany and Una understand that since it was a novella, the plot did have to speed along, but it was a little disappointing that all aspects of the story had to move so quickly.  In essence, we would have loved to see Time Thief as a full length novel.  There is so much Ms. Hackett can do in this unique world and we would love to see her have the time to expand it.

If you are looking for an interesting and fun quick read, you may like to pick up Time Thief and experience what we are talking about.  Luckily, the next novel, Mind Raider is due out in October 2012 and we cannot wait to read it!
