Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Loribelle Hunt
Hello Readers! Today I bring you author Loribelle Hunt. Loribelle is a former Army MP who traded in her combat boots for motherhood, flip-flops and all the Diet Coke she can drink. (She almost misses the combat boots.) She’s the author of more than twenty books, none of which her children are allowed to read. Ever. Visit her website, www.loribellehunt.com, or Facebook, www.facebook.com/loribelle.hunt, for information on new releases.
In celebration of her upcoming title, Warrior (Feb 5, 2013, Samhain Publishing), Loribelle is here to talk about what inspires new ideas. In addition, Loribelle is hosting a GIVEAWAY of anyone of her titles, including Warrior (details below). Please help me welcome Loribelle to That’s What I’m Talking About.
Inspiring New Ideas
Hey y’all! Thanks for letting me visit today!
I love playing with what if scenarios. This is the way I come up with most of my new ideas and The Elect series was no different. I wanted to stay away from shapeshifters for this one, and I didn’t want to try to come up with a new vampire idea. That just left humans, so I wondered what I could do to make them different.
What could I throw at them to make them something more than an average person down the block? Make them more than human? I liked the possibilities. Would they be human with extrasensory talents or something else entirely? What would make them different? I loved the idea having a new species, evolved from humans, living in our midst. How would a new species ensure its survival? I figure they’d have two choices basically. Secrecy or aggression.
In my new series, The Elect have opted for secrecy. They look and sound human, have the same feelings and desires, but that is where the similarities end. The Elect are stronger, faster, and smarter with the instincts of a predator, as if nature knew they’d have a tough fight for survival. (Never mind that fits my obsession with writing alpha males so well lol!) But the Elect have cooler tricks up their sleeves. What’s the point of making up a new species if they don’t have nifty powers to go with them? So far I’ve written characters with telepathy, telekinesis, a truth reader, and a fire starter (well, technically she’s human). They were a lot of fun and I can’t wait to write more.
Thanks for sharing with us today, Loribelle! Here’s more about Loribelle’s upcoming book...
Warrior: The Elect Series Book 3
Samhain Publishing
February 5, 2013
Years ago, former Special Ops officer Carter Owens made the biggest mistake of his life. He met the woman of his dreams—and didn’t fight to keep her. Now that he’s learned Jamie Wade is still alive, and that she bore him a son, Carter plans to protect his family at all costs. Right after he’s rescued her along with several other Elect members being held prisoner in a private hospital.
He isn’t prepared to find her battered, drugged-up, and half-starved. Whatever her captor wanted, the madman hadn’t gone after it humanely.
When Jamie awakens, she’s stunned to find herself free of the abuser who tried and failed to make her admit she’s a telepath. As a police detective, she is driven to join the investigation into the organization that held her and her son captive. But first she’ll have to overcome Carter’s overprotective nature.
Which isn’t going to happen anytime soon, because first she has to recover—and convince him that their out-of-control sexual chemistry isn’t a good enough reason to stay.

About the books:
|
In The Charmed—Book One of The Charmed Trilogy—Olivia Ann Greyson sees only one future for herself—to compose and perform the music she has loved since she was a child. But that future changes in an instant when a commuter train taking her to the city crashes and is attacked by, unbelievably, a coven of vampires! As the rabid creatures feed their thirst on the surviving passengers, Olivia is spared from an unthinkable fate because of the intervention of another vampire—Caleb Wolfe, a figure from her past who, for reasons he doesn’t understand himself, would do anything to protect her.
After one familiar touch, Olivia recognizes the man behind the vampire. Soon love, and a powerful supernatural connection, begins to grow between them. But with that connection Olivia starts to notice startling changes happening within herself, and violent events make it clear that the vampire coven which wanted her the night of the train crash won’t stop until they have her.
Time is running out for Olivia and Caleb to discover why all this is happening. And the answers they find may painfully tear their new love apart.
In The Charmed Souls—Book Two of The Charmed Trilogy—Olivia Ann Greyson is a Charmer, a Dhampir with the power to lure the supernatural world’s most dangerous of creatures – and she’s in an impossible situation. She must leave behind Caleb Wolfe, the strong, protective vampire she has fallen madly in love with, in order to learn how to protect herself from the vampires, shifters and demons that will be drawn to her for the rest of her life.
Human Guardian, Alec Lambert, has been assigned to see to Olivia’s training by the organization he belongs to, which is known simply as The Brethren. He takes Olivia to the group’s stronghold in the mountainous regions of Alberta, Canada, where she discovers the answers to her family’s painful past and the extent to which those hunting her will go to capture her. But she also uncovers many secrets and even more questions about this mysterious group she has trusted to protect her – secrets that will have her fighting to get back to the man she left behind.
. . . but will it be too late?
What Nima’s talking about:
|
The Charmed is a surprisingly intimate book. Told in first person, the story unfolds very slowly. The reader has both time and space to create mental pictures, but isn’t left feeling like the story is dragging. Every detail is deliberate. There is action. There is blood. There is sex. There is emotion—a lot of emotion and it sucks you in. When I look ahead to see if my favorite character’s names appear, if I’m worried about them, then I know I’m hooked. Yeah, I looked ahead.
Wenrick’s characters are likable. Heroine Olivia Ann Greyson, from whose perspective the story is told, is a graduate student finishing advanced degrees in both music composition and performance. I especially liked that music played an important role in the story and wasn’t downplayed as simple set-dressing. Her love-interest Caleb Wolfe also has personal passions that show up to shape the flow of the story and are integral to a very significant action scene.
Debut author Christine Wenrick takes advantage of traditional vampire and paranormal folklore to create her tale. Like Stephenie Meyer’s “good” vampires, Wenrick’s “Daywalkers” intentionally don’t attack humans for blood, but they do drink it. I think I actually liked Wenrick’s treatment of their reasons and methods better than those of the Twilight cast.
One of my disappointments was an insufficiently explained connection. When Olivia and Caleb meet up at the beginning of the book, it’s apparent that they’ve met each other before the reader arrives on the scene. That first meeting is given a cursory once over, but never explained in the same detail that typifies the rest of the book. That’s disappointing because the story surrounding that first meeting seems to have a lot to do with who Caleb is… something I hope will be addressed before the trilogy resolves.
The Charmed Souls, the second book in the Charmed Trilogy is shorter and better than the first. Also, the books must be read in order. Without the sequencing, all that was set-up in book one would lose its significance. Everything, the action, the romance... it’s all escalated. Olivia’s music becomes very significant to her relationship with Caleb. Additionally, new connections are made and small details that the reader glances over in the first book become significant in this volume.
Being a new author, Wenrick’s novels seemed to lack some of the polish of a more experienced writer, but she shows a finesse and attention to her plot lines that leads me to believe she will only improve with successive attempts. I’m very much looking forward to reading the third installments of the trilogy.

About the book:
|
Jillian Cardiff came to this remote mountain town to forget the demon attack that almost killed her. Instead, she rescues - and falls for - a gorgeous stranger who has no memory of anything other than his name. Handsome, charming and protective, Reseph seems like the kind of man that Jillian can trust. But with hints of a troubling history of his own, he's also the kind of man that can be very dangerous . . .
Reseph may not know his background, or why he mysteriously appeared in Jillian's life, but he knows he wants to stay. Yet when Jillian's neighbours are killed and demon hunters arrive on the scene, Reseph fears that he's putting Jillian in danger. And once it's revealed that Reseph is also Pestilence, the Horseman responsible for ravaging the world with death and destruction, he and Jillian must face the greatest challenge of all: can they forget the horrors of a chilling past to save the future they both desire?
What I’m talking about:
|
The final story in Ms. Ione’s Lords of Deliverance paranormal series about the four horsemen of the apocalypse centers around the final brother, Reseph, also known as Pestilence. Pestilence was "created" from Reseph when his "seal" was broken back before the first book in this series. As Pestilence, he brought about hell on Earth, literally, and caused the horrific death of thousands (if not millions) of innocent people.
It's been three months since the events at the end of the third book, Lethal Rider, which concluded with the death of Pestilence. His death allowed for the return of Reseph (the good half of the horseman), who was subsequently released from Sheoul (the demon realm, comparable to hell) where he'd been imprisoned. He was tossed back to Earth with his memories removed by his guardian angel (of sorts), Reaver, who did this in hopes that Reseph would have time to heal and integrate back into his life and family.
At the start of Rogue Rider, Jillian discovers a very naked and lost Reseph from the snowy hills of her reclusive property. Although Reseph has no knowledge of his past, including all of the unearthly destruction he brought upon the world, Jillian takes him in against better judgement. It’s obvious that Jillian has suffered emotion damage and has chosen a life a solitude, yet she felt a connection to Reseph that tugs on her emotionally.
The opening few chapters of Rogue Rider are sweet and romantic, telling us the story of a couple of lost souls getting the chance to heal and start over. Both Reseph and Jillian sensed in the back of their minds that something bigger was going on, but each chose to embrace the other with blind passion. I enjoyed seeing Reseph free of the horrors from his past and getting a glimpse of the brother we never saw in the previous three books. I also felt the gradual unveiling (at first) of Reseph's memories allowed the couple to deal with pieces of him in a safe way - giving them time to become emotionally invested before the ball drops.
I adored Jillian, who pulled on my heartstrings. Even before I knew the whole hideous truth of her backstory, I had a gut feeling it would end up coming between Reseph and Jillian. But for a woman that hid from the world, I was impressed with how she opened herself up to Reseph. Although she tried to take it slow and keep her distance, she just couldn’t resist this sexy, mysterious man.
On the other hand, Reseph was a total character. He was cocky and arrogant, somehow sensing that it was just in his nature. I loved how he gave people in town descriptive names like “Deputy Dick” for the local officer who rubbed him the wrong way and “Two Packer” for a woman who had a rasp like she smoked heavily. Watching him battle internally between the urges for power and destruction versus taking a calmer, more civilized road was fantastic. Of course, things change drastically once his memories catch up to him, and he is horrified by all of the death and destruction caused at the hand of Pestilence. Seeing him as he once was, but then allowing him the chance to redeem himself from the horrors created a likely character, despite of the evil we witnessed in the first three books.
Together Reseph and Jillian made a good pair. I loved that they both took chances with their feelings - letting the other know how much they really did mean to the other. There were no games between the couple. This also happened even after Jillian learned the truth about Reseph’s history. I enjoyed how pieces of the past were exposed and examined. Both Jillian and Reseph take each event in stride - sometimes pulling them apart, and sometimes bringing them back together.
Once the truth is out of the bag, Reseph must not only earn the forgiveness of his friends and family, but he must also forgive himself, which is no easy task. This story is about both redemption and forgiveness. I feel that Ms. Ione does a good job on the redemption piece, but sometimes I felt the forgiveness was granted a little too easily. While each sibling expressed the pain and betrayal caused by Pestilence in their own individual way, I felt that their collective “about face” from wanting him dead no matter what to finding him a cure from his madness was quick.
Beyond Reseph’s story, Rogue Rider wrapped up a few loose ends from the first three books. I am happy to report that we delve deeper into Gethel, former caretaker of the horsemen. I was unsatisfied with the reasons for her betrayal listed in the last book, and was glad to find out more about this wicked angel. In addition there are a couple of BIG reveals that will have a direct impact on the next book (Reaver’s story, back in the Demonica series). One of which was something I had guessed at a while ago, the other came as a bit of a shocker. Neither had huge impacts on this story, but it was exciting to watch the progress of the overall story arc.
And there were definitely some action-filled and tense moments, especially involving the character Lance and the nefarious branch of the Aegis. I was on the edge of my seat several times wondering who would get to key people or information first: the good guys or Lance et. al. This made for some frantic and intense reading!
In the end, I enjoyed most of this story, especially the first two-thirds of the book. Reseph is definitely a favorite redeemed hero. I was even okay with the speed of forgiveness because each sibling did have their chance to “get it out of their system” and tell Reseph how he did hurt them. However, I felt that the conclusion of the book was a bit too simple and almost anti-climatic for my liking. The book spent a lot of time building up to a showdown of good and evil, and as the battle began, the dangers continued to grow. Yet I felt let down by the way in which it was won and the ultimate battle was suddenly over. Nonetheless, Rogue Rider is still a satisfying conclusion to the Lords of Deliverance series, and I look forward to continuing the tale in the next Demonica book!

Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Jennifer Ashley
Hello Readers! Today I bring you romance author Jennifer Ashley. New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Jennifer Ashley has lived and traveled all over the world, and now lives in the Southwest. She writes historical, paranormal, and contemporary romance as Jennifer Ashley; mysteries as Ashley Gardner; and paranormal romance and urban fantasy as Allyson James.
Jennifer enjoys writing and reading above all else, but her hobbies include cooking, hiking, playing flute and guitar, painting, and building miniature rooms and dollhouses.
Today Jennifer is going to tell us about her research for writing about Shifters. Please help me welcome Jennifer to That’s What I’m Talking About.
Thanks so much for asking me to post! I’m excited about the release of Mate Claimed (Shifters Unbound Book 4).
If you’re new to the Shifter series, this is a contemporary paranormal romance series about shape-shifters who have revealed themselves to the world, only to be rounded up and made to live in Shiftertowns and wear shock collars to control their violence. Or so humans think. The Shifters know who’s really in charge.
In Mate Claimed, Eric Warden, the leader of his Shiftertown must round up a half-Shifter half-human woman who’s been passing for human all her life. She’s resistant, not wanting to reveal her Shifter side to the world, but her Shifter instincts are making her crazy, and Eric fears she’ll go feral if he doesn’t bring her in.
It’s a hot, sexy book. :-) But also has a meaty plot and lots of heart.
I’ve been asked how I do research for writing about the Shifters. I’ve always loved animals (horses, dogs, cats), and am very aware that they each have their own personalities, wants and needs. Even the cats I have now—twins—are completely different from each other (though the same in many entertaining ways—for “entertaining” read “exasperating.”)
I’m also lucky enough to live near a private wildlife refuge which rescues big cats, wolves, bears, and other animals that have been mistreated, illegally captured, or abandoned. The animals live in giant enclosures in the countryside, and the owners and caretakers do lectures on animal behavior. It is fascinating to watch big cats of different species interact with each other—the smallest cats, like leopards, often are the most dominant. Watching a giant tiger rub heads with a panther is an amazing thing.
My Shifters are very tactile—they touch and hug for reassurance (and for more fun things as well :-)). The humans who enter Shiftertown are often startled to see male Shifters hugging each other for comfort, or a whole family in a group cuddle. But the humans soon learn it’s not so bad!
When I’m writing about other kinds of shifters—such as dragons (see the Stormwalker series I write as Allyson James), I am free to make up whatever I want. Fun stuff! But I take as given that a dragon is an animal, and their human sides take on animal instincts (scent, ability to see in well in the dark, possessiveness of a mate).
Why do I like shapeshifters so much? I don’t know. When I first started reading fantasy way back when, I wasn’t always as fond of shapeshifters. How can you communicate with someone when they’re an animal? Or a dragon?
But the more I wrote about them, the more I liked them. Now, I can’t imagine not writing a shapeshifter book. Mine are hot, hunky males who can change in to warm, fuzzy animals. And it’s such fun to write about the cubs!
I hope you enjoy my shapeshifter world and Mate Claimed.
I’ll do a giveaway—comment on why you like shapeshifter books (or why you don’t!) and be qualified to win a signed book.
Thanks so much, Jennifer! For more about Mate Claimed and the giveaway, read below!

Berkley, Oct. 2, 2012
To protect her, he will unleash the beast within…
Eric Warden knows that half-Shifter wildcat Iona is passing for human, living without a Collar in the human world. He also knows that if she does not acknowledge her Shifter nature and her mating hunger, it could kill her. Iona finds the mysterious and dangerous Eric, a wildcat and leader of his Shiftertown, haunting her dreams, but she vows never to "come out" and take the Collar, fearing backlash against her mother and sister for hiding the fact that she's Shifter. But Eric is a compelling Shifter male, and Iona's hunger calls to him.

The Trouble with Magic Giveaway
Hello readers...
Thanks to Sourcebook Publishing, I have one (1) copy of The Trouble with Magic by Patricia Rice to giveaway to one (1) lucky winner.
About the book:
Felicity Malcolm Childe's gift for experiencing visions through touch has always been more curse than blessing. She sees horrifying images each time she brushes her hand against another person, and she is forced to cover herself from toe to finger to deflect the vicious onslaught. Only the maddeningly handsome Ewen Ives harbors no guilty secrets to cause her pain. He is betrothed to another, and he is at odds with the Malcolm family- but he is Felicity's only hope. Will they find the spell to remove her gift? Or will Ewen forget their mission once he sees Felicity without her unsightly head to toe garments?
I adore Ms. Rice’s Magic Series and have this one waiting on my Kindle. This delightful series blends an historical setting with a touch of magic and always lots of romance. I am not a big “historical romance” reader, but I enjoy how Ms. Rice takes the genre and adds the paranormal-ish twist! What about you... do you have a preferred genre to read? Do you like when an author blends two genres together?
The Rules: Thank you to Sourcebooks Publishing for generously donating one (1) copy of The Trouble with Magic to give away. To be entered, please use the RAFFLECOPTER form below. I also want to thank each of you that tried out RAFFLECOPTER with me. What did you think? I’d love your feedback as I decide whether or not to continue to use this option for giveaways. I know that there were problems with FIREFOX users, and I’ve attempted to reach the company for help, but no one has replied. I’m on the fence right now, so I’d love feedback.
The Winners (as selected by Rafflecopter):
CONGRATULATIONS!!
I am emailing the winners. Please email me at twimom227 (at) gmail (dot) com with your full name and mailing address so that the publisher can mail you the book directly. If I do not hear from the winners by Friday August 3, 2012 by the end of the day, I will select another winner.

Must Be Magic Giveaway
Hello readers...
I know you’ve all seen it, but I’m finally going to try it - that’s right - RAFFLECOPTER! I’ve noticed more and more blogs, authors and publishers using Rafflecopter for their giveaways, and I thought I’d sign up and give it a go. So, in order to test out Rafflecopter, I’m having a GIVEAWAY!
Thanks to Sourcebook Publishing, I have two (2) copies of Must Be Magic by Patricia Rice to giveaway to two (2) lucky winners.
About the book:
Lady Leila Staines is the dark-haired Malcolm, the one who has yet to discover her magical gift. But she's convinced that Dunstan Ives, the brooding master cultivator, can arrange a flower garden that will help her distill fragrances. Ives, accused of killing his wife, shuns decadent society and has no use for another beautiful woman—except that Leila seems to have bewitched him.
I loved this book, giving it 4 Stars, an A-. To read my full review, click HERE.
The Rules: To be entered, please use the Rafflecopter enter form, below. You do not need to be a google friends connect follower of my blog, but it is always appreciated. Contest is open from July 23, 2012 until Saturday June 28, 2012 at 12:01 AM EDT. If your email is not part of your profile, please leave it so I may contact the winners. One entry per person. Contest is restricted to US and Canadian mailing addresses only. I am not responsible for items lost in the mail.
