After finishing reading the first book in the Hadley Brothers Trilogy, The Wolf Who Loved Me, I thought for certain we’d see dear Grayson matched with Lucy. To my wonder and delight, we are introduced to newcomer, American Liviana (Livi) Mayeux. She is shipped, against her choice, to live with the maternal grandfather she’s never met. Livi looks for every opportunity to steal her way back home to New Orleans to reunite with her Lycan brothers and father.
Upon arriving at her grandfather’s, Livi is immediately deemed unfit for the ton and requires schooling in the arts of society. Grayson’s mother, a friend of Livi’s deceased mother, is recruited to help “make Livi into a lady.” Forced to accompany his mother, Grayson is immediately struck by Livi’s beauty and her lack of lady-like charm. Soon the whole gang, including many characters from the previous books, are headed to Bath for some socialization.
I was taken with Livi immediately! She is feisty, challenging, and something that Grayson is unsure how to handle. Upon first meeting, Livi recognizes that Gray is a Lycan from his birthmark and proceeds to tell him how she has a similar mark on her thigh! I love how she makes Gray all tongue-tied. It’s an amusing and refreshing change of pace that Livi is from a Lycan family and recognizes what Gray is immediately.
Gray and Livi are a romantically beautiful pair. They are both so uncertain what to do with the other. Their feelings overwhelm them each. One of my favorite scenes was a private moment between the two, while Gray teaches Livi to dance. The interaction is sublimely wonderful and touching. My heart was racing along side Livi’s heart. She took a chance and opened up, something uncommon in many historical romances. I'm thankful that Gray didn't just blow her off. He made it clear he wants her, but they can't go that route. I ached for them both... Stuck in a society with rules with which they aren't meant to conform.
One of the other things I enjoyed in Wolfishly Yours is the banter between the brothers Hadley, Livi and Sophie. We were introduced to Sophie in the previous story, and she is a clear match for the eldest Hadley brother, Archer. The group on whole is witty and smart; their play on words and jabs are such fun. I love the brash improperness of the dialogue!
Of course, not everything goes smoothy, and things begin to look bleak for our couple. First, Gray just can’t do anything right to save his life. He is falling for Livi, but thinks he cannot court her (well, her grandfather did say to stay away). He makes so many problems for himself, including telling Livi he is being forced to marry her, when that really isn’t the truth of his heart.
To further the problems, continual misunderstandings cause for a complete breakdown in communications. I will admit that I was extremely frustrated at a couple points, and I was worried that I would get too annoyed to read. Thankfully, much to my surprise, the entire situation was handled quite well and was actually fairly riveting. Although much of the finale set up felt a bit contrived, the pieces fell into place, and I was extremely satisfied.
In the end, Wolfishly Yours was a very enjoyable read, and probably my favorite of the series to date. The shifter aspect was more pronounced in this book than the last, but the story is primarily a historical over paranormal romance. The pace was quick, action keeping the story progressing forward. Characters, both new and old, were fun. I really loved the "Moonlighting-esque" banter and that Livi isn't a proper English woman. I feel all of these features gave new life to this regency series. Finally, the romance was sweet and appropriate for period piece. Overall a wonderful addition to Ms. Dare’s long-running crossover series.

I’m a huge Jill Shalvis fan! She has been an auto-buy author of mine for years and I couldn’t wait to read Rescue My Heart. I loved Rescue My Heart so much. It seems like I’d been waiting for Adam’s story forever, and can only say it was totally worth the wait. We’d seen Adam and Holly interact a bit in other books from the series and I always wondered if they didn’t have some sort of history. There was an amazing tension between them and I couldn’t wait to see what happened if they could spend more time together.
Holly is worried because her father has gone missing and she needs someone to help her track him down. Adam is her first choice for guides, as he has the best tracking skills of anyone she knows. Adam is more than willing to go look for Holly’s father, but he doesn’t want her to come with him. All these years later, Adam is just as attracted to Holly as when they were teens. He is in a bit of a bad place still following his last tour in Afghanistan. He is still having some issues with PTSD and really just wants to be left alone. Holly is determined to go with Adam no matter what he wants and makes sure she is included. Even after so many years apart, Adam and Holly have amazing chemistry together. They also can’t seem to keep their hands off of each other. Jill Shalvis writes some of the sexiest love scenes, and she totally delivers once again with the love scenes between Adam and Holly. Whether you love hot and steamy or sweet and tender, you will get your wish with this book.
I loved seeing how both Holly and Adam has grown and changed in their years apart, yet still loved one another just as much as they did many years ago. Not that either was quick to admit their true feelings. I also loved getting to spend time with Dell, Jade, Brady, and Lilah again. I’m a sucker for books in a series and love visiting with characters from prior books. While I loved all the books in this series, Rescue My Heart is my favorite of this series.

Fury’s Kiss was a completely unexpected delight to read. This story simply never stops. Dory is constantly in motion, either mentally or physically, and usually the latter. She is an absolute badass, without the entire cast of characters constantly telling her (and by default, the reader) so. In fact, there are precious few others who have any faith in her at all, leaving her to prove herself over and over. Even better, the only person she’s really interested in proving anything to is herself. Dory is at war with her inner vampire as much as any outside force, but it is a battle she occasionally loses.
The supporting characters in Fury’s Kiss are just as colorful, to say the least. Louis-Cesare is the former poster boy for Vampire Senate elite, but makes it painfully obvious that he doesn’t care about status anymore, and would do anything for Dory, even when it gets him into trouble. Dory’s best friend, Claire, is devoted and funny, and provides a lot of both humor and emotion, as well as balancing out the politics and war that govern much of the story. Ray is an absolute hoot, and though he’s one of the most entertaining characters I’ve read in a long time, he surprised me with both his bravery and his loyalty to Dory.
Not just a story filled with battles and machinations, Fury’s Kiss is part romance, too. Dory and Louis-Cesare are fantastic together, her resistance and his understanding blending beautifully into a sweet and sexy dance that wove its way throughout the book. I really loved these two together, and very much enjoyed watching Dory alternatively war with herself, and give in to her own desires.
While the plot of Fury’s Kiss is gratifyingly complex, it took me roughly a quarter of the story to recognize all the key players and become accustomed to their voices and mannerisms, as well as the mechanics of the relationships between them all. Rather than feeling discouraged, though, I found the story as a whole to be so much fun that getting to know the characters was very much a treat. There are also a good many flashbacks in Fury’s Kiss, which did get a little confusing once or twice, but a brief reread of those sections was enough to sort things out pretty quickly.
Fury’s Kiss was a very nice surprise. As this is the third book in the Dorina Basarab series, there was a lot I had to catch up on in order to feel familiar with the characters and the world within the book. Although it took me a while for a comfortable level of familiarity to set in, the story as a whole moved so well that I was whisked right along to wherever Ms. Chance wanted me to go. While I do believe it would be better to read the entire series from the beginning, this story was very satisfying on its own. Shifting so quickly from humor to suspense to deadly battles and back again could have easily been disorienting, but it wasn’t. It was engaging and sometimes sweet, but mostly just a lot of fun to read.

Revelation is the premier novel in the new Seven Signs series by Erica Hayes. Although a little rough, we enjoyed this darkly apocalyptic urban fantasy/paranormal romance novel.
The series is based on the Christian belief of the apocalypse, which has seven signs that herald its coming. The first being a plague upon the people, the second turning the seas into blood. This second sign is where our story begins. Gikany and Una found it interesting that this series begins on the second plague, not the first. We also enjoyed that this story takes place in the not too distant future, which is implied by the technological advances that are part of the society.
Revelation begins with our introduction to Luniel, one of the Tainted. The Tainted are a band of fallen warrior angels that committed a sin that stripped them of their souls and have left them on Earth, as a mercenary group working for Mike...aka Michael the Archangel. They still, theoretically, can be redeemed/returned to Heaven, although it seems a bit of a debated and moot point. Mike uses them to help control the demon population and uprisings as well as doing jobs that would be...unpleasant for a member of Heaven. Luniel fell in love with a human woman and lost her to a demon Prince's lies. His sin of lust is what cast him from Heaven.
Our heroine in Revelation is the assistant medical examiner, Morgan Sterling. She is not just an atheist, but generally despises and distrusts religion. She is completely consumed with the purpose of finding a cure to the plague that has wrecked havoc on the inhabitants of New Babylon (formerly called Manhattan). While working in the morgue she comes across, or more appropriately, Luniel surprises her on his mission of finding a lost angel. The story then takes off from there.
Although Gikany thought the story started a little slowly for her, Una felt compelled to read. Maybe it was due to her mood and this book was exactly something Una needed, but the world was completely fascinating. Gikany and Una enjoyed the futuristic nuances and the strange mythology. Although we found some author errors (not sure that whiskey and chocolate smell the same as toffee, but it's a personal taste), they did not detract from our enjoyment. We feel it is akin to the start of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward. The novel is a little rough, but the characters and world more than make up for its coarseness and editorial errors.
There was a tad bit of redundancy in the conflict of Morgan trusting and believing in not just Luniel but faith, religion, God, etc. but it was vital to the plot points. However, the ongoing tug-of-war in her heart and head did get a tad repetitive. Luniel and his internal battle was just as fascinating but we found him completely adorable...in a hot, tough, male warrior angel way. However, the passion between Morgan and Luniel was hot enough to steam Una's glasses and burn Gikany's fingers. The romance is richly erotic and encompasses all of the reader's senses.
All in all, Revelation is a great start to what may be a fascinating and enthralling series. If you are interested in a darkly erotic apocalyptic urban fantasy, you may just want to give the Seven Signs series a try.

Saturday Conversations 10/27/2012
By nature, I'm a planner. I'm a walking Franklin-Covey. I rely on the calendar to keep my life organized. I have a mini-meltdown when someone throws a wrench in my carefully crafted schedule.
Sure, I can be flexible with the best of 'em. I have to be with my job. I'm an English teacher in an alternative education setting for kids in grades 6-12. It's a new adventure every day. Nothing ever goes as planned.
When an athletic coach doesn't give information until the last minute, it annoys me. It really shouldn't be a secret what time athletes need to arrive before a cross country meet. Last-minute it is! Actually, this doesn't merely annoy me. It flat-out ticks me off. I think it's rude for the coach to not give parents as much warning as possible. Our Saturdays are held hostage because of middle school cross country.
Kids and THEIR plans. Mmmmhmm. Once my kids reached middle school age, they learned that they need to plan things in advance, or mom would say no... or levy tasks to repay her for messing with her schedule. Yeah. DS3 is still learning this. DD2 has mastered it. DD1 is a pro.
What are your thoughts on changing plans? Are you one of those go-with-the-flow people, or are you a scheduled and regimented person? How do you feel when people change plans last-minute?

Black Lament jumps back into the story of our heroine, Madeline (Maddy) Black, moments after the emotionally explosive conclusion of the third book in Ms. Henry’s fabulous series. Maddy has recently lost the love of her life, killed by her fallen angle father, Azazel. She is oddly comforted her by great (great...) grand-daddy, Lucifer, until she realizes he wants to keep her little bundle of joy growing in her belly - something else that Maddy just discovered. It is a lot for Maddy to adjust to, including her continually increasing powers born from Lucifer.
Although she wants to just be left alone, Maddy still has a job to do (she is an agent of death and has souls to guide to the “Door.”) To compound her problems, she’s on the hit list of all the major faerie factions after taking out one of their queens (who also happened to be her boss/friend, JB’s mom). Surrounding Maddy is her ever present house guardian gargoyle, Beezle and her friends Jude and Samiel. Adding to the equation is her ex-fiancee (arranged marriage), Nathaniel - there to protector her at the arrangement of Lucifer. Things just aren’t looking up for our heroine. In order to stop the attacks on her life, Maddy decides to take the fight to both the fae and her father.
Once again, the greatest strength of this series is the cast of amazingly well-developed characters. Maddy herself is changing and growing. Not only does she have a larger “family unit” to protect and care for, but soon she will be a mother. She rises to the challenge time and time again. In addition, Maddy’s powers are magnifying in range and intensity. With her recent life transitions, Maddy embraces the “darker” side of these powers, and we see a significant shift in her attitude, strength and demeanor. She’s standing up for herself and those she loves, damned be the rest.
I adore Ms. Henry's writing style. We go from tough Maddy, to a woman having an emotional break down at the thought of going on without her true love. Then Maddy moves on to outright humorous. The transitions are achingly lovely and emotionally fulfilling. Sometimes there is such tenderness in scenes between Maddy/Jude and Maddy/JB. Both men provide a presence that is a comfort yet tough. I find the range of sentiment and responsiveness within each character is what makes this story and series so amazing. Love it!
Overall the story flows well, with a great pace and balanced mixture of thought vs action. The plot progression is just right - never lagging behind, even with some emotionally-laden scenes. The dialogue is plain fabulous.
There are two things that did bother me while reading. One, I felt at times that “too much” was happening to Maddy. For a while it felt like nothing was going right. I began to worry that the story would become one-sided, with Maddy always fighting and in trouble with someone. However, just when I thought things couldn’t get worse, Ms. Henry pulls out some major boo-yah and WOW! I’m still shaking my head! (And I look forward to reading about the outfall from her actions in future books!)
The second thing is Maddy’s growing “relationship” with Nathaniel. Throughout the story, Nathaniel was actually unselfish and kind (or so it appeared). This caused some confusion in Maddy, who wanted desperately to hold on to her hatred of the man. It annoyed me that she should even feel conflicted emotion. Maddy's feeling may be confused, but mine aren't. She just lost her husband. I felt it was WAY TOO SOON for her to even contemplate falling for this man who has betrayed her over and over. I want to know why she can't just care for him without it meaning she has to let go of Gabriel?! Her husband is only weeks gone, and I felt that some of what happened in Black Lament diminished what Maddy and Gabriel had together.
In the end, this is a good follow up to one of my all-time favorite books. Maddy created some enormous enemies this time around and ticked off just about every paranormal faction (to include her own people). Just as Beezle fears where Maddy is headed, I fear it as well. Black Lament felt like a turning point - a transition - in the overall story arc. There was a lot of change, and I'm not sure how it will sit with me in the long run. Maddy is walking a fine line, and if she falls, I don't know if I can't follow her. With that said, I cannot wait to read the next installment!

Genesis’ glossy, black hair, ice blue eyes ringed by gold, would have almost made her socially acceptable- if it wasn’t for her honey, almond skin and blue, gold veins.
