AAD Author Spotlight: Carolyn Crane
Hello Readers! Today I bring you my newest favorite urban fantasy author, Carolyn Crane. Carolyn lives in Minneapolis with her husband and two daring cats. She works a day job as a freelance advertising writer, and has for years (Carolyn says “think low-rent Don Draper”). She’s also waited tables at a surprising number of Minneapolis restaurants and bars (though not as many, incidentally, as her writer husband has). She’s been a shop clerk and a plastics factory worker, which she was dismal at (think I Love Lucy).
As a side note, Carolyn can relate almost any life experience to one or another Star Trek episodes, and if you invite her to your party, your cheese plate will be in grave danger.
During rare moments when she’s not at her computer, she can be found reading in bed, running, helping animals, or eating Mexican food.

Carolyn: Thank you so much for having me! And thanks for that wonderful introduction!! Look, I am all exclamation points right now.
Twimom: Aren’t exclamation points fun?! That reminds me of a Seinfeld episode... Oh sorry... I digress...
Okay, let’s get this out of the way... (insert fangirl squee) I LOVE your Disillusionists Trilogy... As you know I consumed the first 3.5 stories in a matter of days. (Readers, after meeting Carolyn at the 2011 AAD con in Philly, I put her book Mind Games on my TBR list, hoping to read it last fall. I finally got around to it last month and fell in love.) First, can you please tell my readers a little bit about the trilogy and the amazing world you’ve created?
Carolyn: LOL thanks! I’m so glad you gave it a spin! You know, when we met at AAD, it was clear we both share such a love for a lot of the same books, and in particular, the work of Meljean Brook, and I remember thinking, I hope she likes my series, so I’m thrilled that you do!!
Okay, description: The Disillusionists Trilogy follows the journey of Justine Jones and her friends—former losers whose weaknesses were turned into crime-fighting powers. It also follows Justine’s suitors: two flawed but brilliant men—one on a journey of redemption, the other descending into a pit of moral depravity. The trilogy takes place in a fantastical Midwestern city - a Chicago & Milwaukee that’s been run down by years of paranormal crime.
Twimom: Other than your recently released novella, Devil’s Luck (review HERE), what are your plans for Justine, Packard, Simon and Shelby?
Carolyn: I don’t have any specific plans - but I love writing novellas and shorts, and they may keep making appearances for some time to come, if I get more novella ideas. But Head Rush is the last novel of the world. I always saw it as a trilogy.
Twimom: *hoping for more novellas* Okay, I’m dying to know... your heroine, Justine, is a major hypochondriac with fears over some bizarre medical issues. How did you come up with these (horrifying yet convincing) conditions? Are you or do you know someone with as much fear as Justine? Did you have to do a lot of medical research?
Carolyn: I’ve been around a lot of people with heath fears and when younger, I worried about my heath far too much, too. (Though nothing like Justine!). The conditions are made up, but sort of inspired by various real diseases that are twisted and made more fantastical. Actually, last year another blogger did some research and found out Vein Star is actually a real disease, similar to the one I made up. I was shocked!
Partly I wanted my diseases to be fantastical because I felt like, there are real people with real diseases out there, and I didn’t want to use real diseases and make light of them. Also, I want this to be escapist read and not anchored too deeply in reality.
Twimom: Well, I for one thought the diseases were perfect and hilarious! I am very sad to say goodbye to my Disillusionist friends, but I’m excited about your two new upcoming series. Can you give us a little more information yet?
Carolyn: My paranormal spy romance will come out first (don’t yet know when! I will know by the end of March if not sooner), but it takes place in rural Minnesota, and it is a massively quirky project that I am in love with. It’s also a LOT hotter than the Disillusionists… a bit wild, in fact—I’ll tell you that.
My UF adventure series, Dark Forest, is more of a traditional UF. It’s on the humorous and sexier side, and takes place in northern Wisconsin. Kind of a rural gothic supernatural book where even the deer heads on the walls of the rustic supper club look vaguely vampiric. I love the hero in this one.
Twimom: I cannot wait to read the new books... They will be at the top of my list when you find out more info!
You have attended Authors After Dark in the past and are a featured author in 2012. Why AAD? What are your favorite aspects of AAD?
Carolyn: I love the quiet times of this convention. Like, sitting down to coffee with readers and bloggers I’ve chatted with online, and just being relaxed and talking, or discussing things that have weighed on my mind with other authors. There’s something about that in-person contact that is so important. And it’s just wonderful to be in a place with 400 other people who you have so much instantly in common with. And everyone is SO nice.
Twimom, you have chosen to attend again, too! What are your favorite aspects?
Twimom: *looks around* a question for me?! AAD Philly was the first (and to date only) con I’ve attended. I loved it so much - meeting my long time blogging tweeps and friends - and well, stalking Meljean, Larrisa and Lara! But in all seriousness, it’s as you described - the intimate settings to be able to talk about what we love we others that “get it.” And meeting new-to-me authors (like you!) was such a thrill. This year I’m especially excited because of the locale (I’ve never been to New Orleans) and being a featured blogger.
Okay, back to you... I always like to ask authors about their reading habits... What types of books do you enjoy reading? What was your favorite read in 2011?
Carolyn: Favorite read of 2011!! That is not easy. I’ll be honest. for relaxation I read out of my genre. I love historicals, paranormal romance, steampunk. I was crazy about Meredith Duran’s a LADY’S LESSON IN SCANDAL. Also, I read ICE STORM by Anne Stuart, and it blew my socks off! As did DREAMS OF A DARK WARRIOR by Kresley Cole.
Twimom: What upcoming 2012 releases are you most excited to read?
Carolyn: I’m looking forward to Meredith Duran’s AT YOUR PLEASURE, and Jenn Bennet’s SUMMONING THE NIGHT as well as CAUGHT IN THE ACT by Jill Sorenson

Tony and Reese have been neighbors for a few years, both men are completely hung up on and attracted to the other. However, neither is willing to make the first move, that is until Reese decides he will take a chance. But his flirting doesn’t get far, and poor Tony is completely tongue-tied. When a mutual acquaintance offers Reese a way into Tony’s bed (and hopefully his heart), Reese jumps at the chance for love.
This was my first 1 Night Stand (1NS) novella and the second novella I’ve read by KT Grant. I am impressed with her ability to create intimate romances in such a short space. The characters are real enough, relatable on some level, and don't require lots of background and superfluous details to enjoy the story. We know these two men long for each other, and Ms. Grant is able to quickly build the need and frustration.
For those wondering, each 1NS story is independent, using a somewhat mysterious character, Madame Evangeline, as a match maker with a 100% track record in finding the perfect long-term mate. In this book it's a suitable vehicle used to get the men together in a fairly short span.
I adored Tony and Reece. They both were a bit shy, but once together, passion explodes. And wow--there are some completely sexy scenes involving a hot tub! At times I thought that Tony was too hung up on the age difference and the fact he was tricked into the date. I felt like he was determined to see the relationship fail before giving it a chance. I also question the need for such an elaborate set up to bring them together, however it added tension and fun to the novella, and in the end--it all worked.
A Bid For Love is a delightful, sexy romance. I enjoyed the overall story and recommend it for a quick, entertaining read.

Finding a mate with an overprotective brother around isn’t easy, but when he and his mate leave for two weeks to go on their honeymoon, Meara Greymere has the perfect opportunity to take control of her own life, and she’s not going to waste it. Brazenly planning to fill the pack’s rental cabins with potential mates, she is determined to find the right male on her own.
When an assassin begins targeting his former team members, Finn Emerson tracks down his friend Hunter to warn him, only to find him away and his stubborn, tempting sister left behind unprotected. Which simply won’t do at all. When he discovers that Meara is looking for a mate, things become even more complicated, especially as the urge to claim her as his own becomes nearly impossible to resist.
This is the third novel in Spear’s Werewolf Series I’ve had the opportunity to review, and it was even more fun than the previous one I read, Dreaming of the Wolf. Spear lets her characters play a lot more here, and the two wolves battle one another in familiar denial, even as it becomes increasingly obvious that they’re a perfect match.
Meara isn’t your typical damsel in distress. She’s an Alpha wolf, and hardwired to take the lead in any perilous situation for the good of those that depend on her. It’s an admirable trait for the most part, and one that is humorously maddening for Finn. However, with both the targets of lethal, skilled assassins, Meara needs protecting, despite her belief to the contrary.
While there’s plenty of suspense in A SEAL in Wolf’s Clothing, it is primarily a romance. Finn is wonderful as he becomes frustrated with both himself and Meara, and watching him realize what he wants most was a pleasure. Meara arrives at her “maybe” moment first, but her Alpha wolf nature keeps her from being a heartsick cliché. Unwilling to try to change Finn, thereby ensuring his eventual resentment, she accepts the situation as she sees it: a chance at real pleasure with a caring, sexy man who’s trying to save her life.
The sensual chemistry between the two wolves is lovely, and Spear uses the pair’s mutual avoidance of commitment to prolong the inevitable bond they share. Both Meara and Finn happily indulge in the ecstasy that’s allowed them, however, and the resulting scenes are even hotter for their restraint. By the novel’s end, the raw passion that defined their earlier interactions is tempered with a sweet acceptance that makes their mating very satisfying.
A SEAL in Wolf’s Clothing is a fun, sexy read that kept me hooked throughout. Spear writes her wolves well, and while the conflict that’s central to the story wasn’t entirely surprising, she lets the fondness growing between her two main characters rightly take center stage. As a fan of Spear’s other novels, and of “Were” stories in general, A SEAL in Wolf’s Clothing is an entertaining and welcome addition to the series.

“Look.” Jem raised the hand that wasn’t gripping Will’s shirt, and pointed. “There. Look.”
Tessa looked where he was pointing – and felt her insides freeze. They were nearly halfway down the hill above the manor house, and there, above them, standing like a sort of sentry on the ridge at the hill’s top, was an automaton. She knew immediately what it was, though it did not look like the automatons that Mortmain had sent against them before. Those had made some surface pretense of being human. This was a tall, spindly metal creature, with long hinged legs, a twisted metallic torso, and sawlike arms.
It was utterly still, not moving, somehow more frightening for its stillness and silence. Tessa could not even tell if it was watching them. It seemed to be turned toward them, but though it had a head, that head was featureless but for the slash of a mouth; metal teeth gleamed within. It seemed to have no eyes.
Tessa quelled the scream rising in her throat. It was an automaton. She had faced them before. She would not scream. Will, propped on his elbow, was staring. “By the Angel – “
“That thing’s been following us; I’m sure of it,” said Jem in a low, urgent voice. “I saw a flash of metal earlier, from the carriage, but I wasn’t sure. Now I am. If you go tearing off down the hill, you risk leading that thing right to your family’s door.”
“I see,” Will said. The half-hysterical tone had gone from his voice. “I won’t go near the house. Let me up.”
Jem hesitated.
“I swear on Raziel’s name,” Will ground out, between his teeth. “Now let me up.”
Jem rolled away and onto his feet; Will leaped up, pushing Jem aside, and, without a glance at Tessa, took off running – not toward the house but away from it, toward the mechanical creature on the ridge. Jem staggered for a moment, openmouthed, swore, and darted after him.
“Jem!” Tessa cried. But he was nearly out of earshot already, racing after Will. The automaton had vanished from view. Tessa said an unladylike word, hiked up her skirts, and gave chase.
It was not easy, running up a wet Yorkshire hill in heavy skirts, brambles tearing at her as she went. Practicing in her training clothes had given Tessa a new appreciation for why it was that men could move so quickly and cleanly, and could run so fast. The material of her dress weighed a ton, the heels on her boots caught on rocks as she ran, and her corset left her uncomfortably short of breath.
By the time she reached the top of the ridge, she was only just in time to see Jem, far ahead of her, disappear into a dark copse of trees. She looked around wildly but could see neither the road nor the Starkweathers’ carriage. With her heart pounding, she dashed after him.
The copse was wide, spreading along the ridgeline. The moment Tessa ducked in among the trees, the light vanished; thick tree branches interweaving above her blocked out the sun. Feeling like Snow White fleeing into the forest, she looked around helplessly for a sign of where the boys had gone – broken branches, trodden leaves – and caught a shimmer of light on metal as the automaton surged out of the dark space between two trees and lunged for her.

As I stated when I reviewed Thread of Death (review HERE), I am new to Ms. Estep’s Elemental Assassins series, but with the “blessings” of the author herself, I jumped into the series with both feet, and am I glad that I did!
The story takes place shortly after the events in Thread of Death, which featured the funeral of underworld figure Mab Monroe. Our heroine, Gin Blanco defeated nemesis Mab in book #5, Spider’s Revenge, in a climatic duel. Now the word is out that Gin is in fact the assassin known as the Spider, and everyone wants a piece of her, especially Mab’s former associate, Jonah McAllister. So at the suggestion of her friends and family, Gin takes a long overdue vacation with her younger sister.
I could go on and on about the plot of By a Thread because it was such a fun story. It had all the right elements - action, love, intrigue - but what I adored most was that we watched Gin’s relationships with her sister, Bria, and her lover, Owen, grown and deepen. By the end of the book I had tears in my eyes because of the emotional bonding I witnessed.
However, let me back up a little here. This book is action packed! I was literally skipping words to find out what was going to happen next - I could not read fast enough. I was often on edge, sometimes even mentally “covering my eyes” because I was continually waiting for something else to go wrong with Gin. Even though she agrees to go on vacation, trouble has a way of finding her. I felt bad for Gin as she fought to protect her sister’s BFF, unpacking her numerous weapons, doing the tough jobs, while her sister watched her with an eye of almost disgust. But it was a good thing Gin doesn’t know how to take a break from the life of an assassin, because this time they tangled with one of the most vicious vampires known to walk the earth. And let me tell you, parts of this book were a bit gruesome, made more cringe-worthy out of concern for Gin.
Randall Dekes is a evil, sadistic vampire with no redeeming qualities. He makes an excellent villain, especially when he takes on and tortures Gin. He also has ties to Jonah McAllister, which makes him enemy number one.
As I said earlier, although a thrilling ride, the best parts of this book are the emotional pieces which stirred my heart. I loved the little nuggets and memories from Gin’s deceased foster father, Fletcher. In addition, Ms. Estep does a superb job portraying Gin's longing to be close with her sister. In opening scenes when she travels with Bria to Blue Sands--it was heart breaking. I could feel Gin's self-doubt and her desire for her sister's love.
And when it comes to love... I ADORE Owen! Owen and Gin are ideal for each other. Individually, they aren’t perfect, but accept each other for who they are, even when they make mistakes. It’s like they know each other on a sub-atomic level and are just content to admire and love the other as is. And when Owen says to Gin "You're mine," rawr!
This was my first full-length Elemental Assassins book, but I easily jumped right in. Gin reminds me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: sometimes the battle is hers alone to fight; she wants to help others; she has a good heart. I loved how Gin really came into her own and accepted who she is and what she does. I think you will too!

Vampire’s Kiss is the second novel in the young adult series, Watchers. After the amazing cliffhanger ending to the first novel, this second installment was not quite what we expected, but Gikany and Una were not disappointed.
The Watchers series continues to be a very interesting young adult series. Drew is a complex character who struggles with both the situation she finds herself in and to try to retain her sense of self while doing what she needs to do to survive her environment. She is both a young lady maturing into a reluctant champion and an insecure girl struggling to grow up. The inner battle that Drew wages with herself struck a chord with us. We related to her being intellectually mature and yet having much to learn about life, social situations, and the opposite sex.
Vampire’s Kiss ramps up the tension of living on the Isle of Night as more information is gleaned about the vampires and life on the island. The preparations for Drew’s first mission are brutal as are the lessons she learns about the consequences of being not only the teacher’s pet, but also a vampire’s pet. Her world expands as she finds out that there are other groups of vampires out there…and they aren’t as friendly as the vampires she is currently trying to survive.
Drew truly is the center of the novel and yet, the way Ms. Wolf weaves some of the other supporting characters into the novel, you find them in your heart as well. A character we truly loved is gone and the implications of her death give Drew a wakening slap. No one, unless you are vampire, is safe on the island.
The only disappointment (though that is too strong a word) we had was that, the book blurb implies that the book will be mostly about the mission. However, the majority of the novel is the preparation for the mission. But so much happens during the preparations, it makes sense. Then the mission, the whirlwind that it is, explodes with consequences and implications for the next novel, Blood Fever (due out in August 2012). Ms. Wolfe continues to enchant you with a gripping storyline. Vampire’s Kiss is a fast read simply because you cannot put it down. Gikany and Una look forward to Blood Fever to see if the connection between Drew and the new vampire she meets on her mission will be her saving grace or her downfall.
