From their initial meeting while chasing down the same rogue vampire, Ian Mordoor knows there’s something special about Jax. She’s far stronger than he initially gives her credit for, which, of course, attracts and arouses him instantly. Setting the tone for the rest of their interactions, Michelle offers up this gem of a quote from Ian:
“She could’ve dropped her weapon and grabbed onto him with two hands, but instead she chose to hurl death threats at him. What a woman!”
And so begins his pursuit not only of their mutual target, but also of Jax herself.
Jax has been conditioned since birth to believe that all vampires are evil and should be eradicated. She’s spent her entire adult life making herself over into a perfect vampire hunter: strong, smart, and solitary. Too bad everything she thinks she knows about the world, and herself, is about to come unraveled at the hands of the sexy hybrid vampire who’s claimed her as his own.
I was pleasantly surprised by the first novel in this series, A Taste for Passion, but was even more so by the second. A Taste for Revenge is a fast-paced tale of retribution, love, and lust, and centers around two of the most enjoyably stubborn main characters I’ve encountered to date.
Ian and Jax are great together, at least in part because they spend most of the novel trying to navigate their evolving relationship, which is a hostile endeavor at best. Jax’s independent nature clashes gloriously with Ian’s occasional bouts of “Alpha Male” complex, and I’m sure they’d have murdered one another in the first half of the novel were it not for the explosively satisfying sex they discover with each other.
Aside from a couple of instances of “dubious consent,” a device I generally have a strong aversion to, I thoroughly enjoyed A Taste for Revenge. Unlike most other stories I’ve read that employ this tactic, I was able to reconnect with the story quickly once the scene was over and was completely engaged throughout the rest of the novel. The affection they have for one another felt so genuine, and the story as a whole hooked me so thoroughly, that I couldn’t stop reading until the very end.
In A Taste for Revenge, Ms. Michelle not only matches the storytelling of the previous novel in the series, she surpasses it. Ian and Jax are perfect for one another, the extremes present in their natures tempered by the love that catches them both off guard. It’s pretty easy to tell where the story is going most of the time, but it’s still lots of fun getting there. The Kendrian Vampires have delivered some great conflicts and sexy couples so far, and if the next one reads as well as this one, it’s going to be just as good. I can’t wait!

Lord of the Black Isle was truly a delightful read! I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Coffman's use of several pieces of classic literature that I consider my favorites. These excerpts were poignant, foreshadowing, and basically excellent pieces of literature. I'd also like to point out that Ms. Coffman's use of consonance in the descriptive portions of her writing were highly effective, and created much interest for the reader, driving the description. Ms. Coffman's grasp of the historical aspect of the novel was phenomenal. She gave accurate (to the best of my understanding of Scottish history) depictions of life at that time, as well as the practice of medicine. She blended the present concepts to those of the past seamlessly, endearing our heroine, Elisabeth, to the reader.
Elisabeth was, by far, one of best written heroines I've read to date, this year. Transported back in time six centuries, along with her twin sister, Isobella, Elisabeth comes from the Douglas lineage, and has a mentor in the ghostly Black Douglas. Initially, she finds the apparition's appearances annoying, but grows to value his input and perseverance toward her ultimate happiness. As the story progresses, Elisabeth is kidnapped twice by a rival clan to the one her sister married. She is 'rescued' by an earl, and taken to a monastery to learn the arts of healing for that time period. An astute student, Elisabeth moves on to an abbey/hospital and is extremely successful as a doctor in that time. Her services are required at the home of David Murray, leader of the clan Murray, and she is whisked away, never to return. Imagine her surprise when she meets the earl and he is the same warrior that rescued her, delivering her to the monastery! Elisabeth's desire for David is clearly understated until about half-way through the novel. At that point, flames erupt from the page. As Elisabeth establishes a hospital in an abandoned abbey, with the assistance of David's only remaining sister, she is seen as an independent woman, with her reality clearly under control. If only she could figure out where David stood in the grand scheme of things!
Enter: the Black Douglas. While his visits to Elisabeth appear to be random, I feel he chooses to visit when Elisabeth is at a crossroads, or to prepare her for difficult situations on the horizon. While at first, the Black Douglas was a bit sarcastic and annoying, he endeared himself to the reader by carefully and tenderly delivering his messages to Elisabeth throughout the novel.
David Murray, or illustrious earl, bears the title due to his father's untimely death. Bearing the burden of his siblings' death, David is quite the sombre character for the first half of the book. Elisabeth, however, brings him out of his melancholy, and gets him in touch with his feelings. Unpredictable at first, David grew exponentially as a character and felt well-rounded to the reader by the time the title wrapped up the plot.
There were several quotes that I felt were beautifully written in the middle portion of Lord of the Black Isle. To illustrate how very powerful Ms. Coffman's writing is, here's a sampling with some thoughts:
“They could never be friends, for his feelings for her were deep and far beyond that now. Yet, he did not want to risk his heart or reveal the tender shoots of his passion that lay coiled like a serpent in his chest, a master mission that devoured all others.”
I truly loved David's description of his feelings for Elisabeth here. As we'd not seen much on the development of their relationship, knowing where David stood helped drive the plot.
“I want to feel you lying beside me with nothing on. I want to feel the satin of yer skin and to hear the way ye gasp when I come into ye. I have though of naught since I first saw ye that day near the burn. I felt possessed by ye, by yer spirit and the woman ye are. Ye bind me and I am helpless to put ye from me.”
The honesty conveyed by David in this moment of passion between him and Elisabeth is perfect for his character. It's not flowery, but blessedly honest and truthful. I felt that Elisabeth was in the perfect place, mentally, to hear this information – and respond accordingly.
I absolutely suggest any reader into Scottish history, especially stories that are historical in nature with a hint of the paranormal pick up Ms. Coffman's Black Douglas titles. The advanced reader's copy that I read, via the publisher and NetGalley, had one error of fact that was probably caught prior to publishing. That, coupled with the desire to see more of the ghostly Black Douglass, are the only points keeping me from giving this title a five-star rating.

The third installment in the Awakening series, Visions of Chains was better than its predecessor, Visions of Skyfire. Gikany and Una enjoyed this latest installment in this intriguing world.
Deidre Sterling is a fascinating character. Despite her position as the daughter of the President, she strives to be her own person. However, she is sadly accustomed to people using her to gain something: power, money, access to the president, etc. Not surprisingly, she has few friends and fewer lovers. Deidre seems content to work for the Rights for Witches (RFW), a group dedicated to stopping the imprisonment and execution of women who are accused of witchcraft.
As you may imagine, betrayal is a huge plot device in Visions of Chains. There are a few unexpected twists, but each are due to acts of betrayal. No one is immune to it either, sad to say. This is, however, a world that has returned to an era of the witch-hunts, and one where people live in fear of what they don’t understand. Betrayal and secret keeping (especially if you are a witch) are a way of life. Gikany and Una were amazed at both how trusting and untrusting Deidre could be.
It is, therefore, not surprising when Deidre rejects the idea of the Mating ritual. Even though she holds the key to saving the world, she does not want to be tied to Finn, her intended eternal. In return, Finn does not want her… just needs her for the time being. After a while, it becomes agonizing that they refuse to complete the Mating. Una felt as if they were wasting time. Their final mission was, surprisingly, fairly simple. However, betrayal once again threw a huge snag into it all.
Although slow in a few moments, Visions of Chains is a very passionate and intriguing story. The realizations made by both Deidre and Finn and the mystery of the big bad are gripping.
The Awakening series continues to be an enjoyable read. Gikany and Una liked Visions of Chains and hope you might too.

Hello Readers! Today I bring you Urban Fantasy author, Adrian Phoenix. Adrian says that as a writer, a person, and a mother, she’s always believed in following your dreams, following your heart. She adds, it’s also important to keep your heart, so she also believes in being prepared for zombie attacks and can’t stress enough the importance of having regular family drills so every member of the household is zombie-ready. Adrian: Thank you so much for inviting me. It’s a real pleasure to meet you and your readers.
Twimom: Although I have yet to read them, I hear WONDERFUL things about your books, and I have Caught Forever Between on my TBR list after I tweeted with Pamela (@SpazP) about her review on GoodReads. Will you please tell us more about your Hoodoo Series and the world you’ve constructed? Where does the new release fits into the big picture?
Adrian: Please thank Pamela for me. She’s truly awesome! The Hoodoo series takes place in the Louisiana bayous (with an occasional foray into New Orleans) and revolves around Kallie Rivière—a young Cajun gal learning hoodoo from her aunt—and her eclectic family which includes bayou pirates, root doctors, and loups garous. This is a hot and humid world of mysterious loa, twilight magic, earthy werewolves, sexy nomads; a world of dark secrets and darker pasts, mystery and murder, coupled with family love and loyalty and a bit of humor.
Caught Forever Between is a stand-alone short story set in the Hoodoo world. Although the story doesn’t feature Kallie, you’ll meet other characters from the series (including the Demon Wolf of the bayou, Devlin Daniels). You don’t need to read the books first to enjoy this one.

Twimom: What does the future hold for the Hoodoo Series?
Adrian: I have a lot of fun with this series and plan to continue with it for as long as there’s a fun and compelling tale to tell. Black Moon Mojo is the next book in the series. (Coming in 2013.)
Twimom: You also author another dark fantasy series, the Maker’s Song series. Will you share with us a bit about this series as well?
Adrian: The Maker’s Song series (A Rush of Wings, In the Blood, Beneath the Skin, Etched in Bone) takes place mainly in New Orleans and features fallen angels, vampires, nomads, and dark government conspiracies.
A Rush of Wings (named as #7 on BN.com’s Best Paranormal Fantasy Novels of the Last Decade 2000-2009) is the first book, the one where we first meet Heather and Dante. In brief: Tracking a sadistic serial murderer has led FBI agent Heather Wallace to New Orleans, Club Hell, and to a mysterious Goth/industrial musician known as Dante. Digging into his past reveals very little. Heather’s sure, however, that Dante is linked to the murderer and could be the next target. But what she doesn’t know is that Dante’s past holds a shocking, dangerous secret, and once it’s revealed not even she will be able to protect him from his destiny.
As much as I enjoy writing the Hoodoo books, Dante and Heather and their journey together really holds my heart.

Twimom: Wow! That’s great (about BN)! Do you enjoy writing any genres outside of the dark fantasy and paranormal genre? Do you have any other works in progress?
Adrian: Oh, yes! I enjoy writing historical paranormal and mysteries. I’m working on a historical paranormal about the Romantic poet John Keats and another urban fantasy series about a pair of brothers who aren’t entirely human who fight the forces of darkness (from which they were born), called Sons of Darkness.
Twimom: Let’s talk Authors After Dark ... you are a featured author in 2012. Why AAD? What are your favorite aspects of AAD?
Adrian: Honestly, this is my first time at AAD. So I’m really looking forward to the experience!
Twimom: Oh, I hope you enjoy it! I went last year and had a blast. Plus... it’s in New Orleans - it’s gonna be great!!
I always like to ask authors about their reading habits... What types of books do you enjoy reading? What was your favorite read in 2011 or so far in 2012?
Adrian: I love reading many different genres—urban fantasy, mystery, historical, non-fiction. So far my favorite read this year has been Rob Thurman’s Doubletake (the Cal Leandros series), and 11/22/63 by Stephen King.
Twimom: What upcoming 2012 releases are you most excited to read?
Adrian: I have such a hard time keeping up with all the great books that are coming out. Anything new by these authors always excite me: Rob Thurman, Jeri Smith-Ready, D.B. Reynolds, Jeaniene Frost, Jaye Wells, Patricia Briggs, James Lee Burke, Kristine Kathryn Rusch (and all her pseudonyms), Jenna Black, J.F. Lewis, Phaedra Weldon, Kelly Gay, Jeanne C. Stein, Jennifer Estep, James Elroy. C.S. Harris, among others. I’m always discovering new (and sometimes not-so-new) authors to love.

"Anyone who tries to touch her comes through me," Chance bit out. "I need better weapons, demon."
His eyes were scary-fierce, primal in intensity; I'd seen the last of my hypercontrolled, calculating ex. That genie was out of the bottle for good. I suspected he'd always had these tendencies, carefully leashed, but something in Sheol - demon magick maybe - seemed to draw it out of him. Neither of us might be entirely ourselves, but I didn't regret what we'd done. Not when I felt so good.
Greydusk studied us for a moment longer and then shook its head. "I was afraid of this."
"What's wrong?"
"You've chosen him as your consort. That will affect his thinking. He can't help but respond to the ancient magick."
"Is there anything I can do to stop it?" I asked.
"No. Once chosen, the consort belongs to the queen until death."

Like Ruthie Knox’s last novel, Ride with Me, I sat down to just “start” reading her latest, About Last Night. It was one the busiest days I’ve had in months and the first chapter was going to be my reward for meeting a major deadline. I was a full quarter into the book before real life came pounding down the door, and I had to pull myself out of the relationship quickly evolving between main characters Nev and Cath. I came back to it later that night after fixing dinner and told myself I was going to “just get comfortable at the computer” before starting the next project on my list. Naturally, I read the rest of the whole darn thing in that one sitting. I had no business blowing off so much work, but I was consumed. Three lousy hours of sleep was worth it to go to bed knowing how it all resolved.
The overall story arc is not overly complicated with subplots, and in this case, that’s a good thing. The narrowness and simplicity of the story serve to make it an intense experience. You have everything invested in the characters and what happens to this unlikely couple. Cath is a chronic mistake-maker. She has walls, thick walls, around her secrets and her heart. When Nev, prince charming—both British and insightful—comes into her life, he brings the one thing able to break down those walls, patience. (Which is to say nothing of the hot, hot chemistry between them. In my mind’s eye, he looked a whole lot like Jeremy Renner. I wonder who you would cast?) We all have skeletons in our mental closets, and we’re pretty sure if anyone knew them, they wouldn’t look at us the same way ever again. Cath is completely convinced of this. When she considers telling Nev about her secrets she can’t. She says, “It wasn’t about morality. It was about judgment. Specifically, it was about her lack of any. But how did you tell that to someone who seemed to have complete confidence in his own?” She lives very much inside her head and when I put a voice to it, it’s my own—only much, much funnier.
Ruthie Knox has a writing style that makes you feel like you’ve just had a slumber party with your best girlfriend. You stay up all night laughing hysterically, you compare notes on hot guys, and then sometime, in the wee hours of the morning when you’re tired and your guard is down, serious happens. It’s deep and meaningful and you know you will keep each other’s secrets when the sun comes up. Knox’s marketing plays up the fluffy, sexy, and fun aspects of her stories, but both books I’ve read are surprisingly poignant. There is a depth there that is unexpected and significant.
Reading this book is effortless. Let me recommend that you do it by the side of the pool or when your car is in the shop and you can’t go run any of those pressing errands. Once you start it, you WILL finish it before anything else happens in your life. It’s that good.
