Author Guest Post & Giveaway: Shirley Wells
Hello Readers! Today I bring you mystery author Shirley Wells. Shirley was born and raised in the Cotswolds (England) and after time spent living in Cyprus and on the idyllic island of Hoy in the Orkneys, she’s now lucky enough to live in the beautiful rolling hills of the east Lancashire Pennines. It’s no surprise then that her mystery novels are set in the area as it saves on research trips.
She’s a dog person and her husband is a cat person. They have two of each which means chaos rules in their house. It also means Shirley has plenty of company during the day. She says that the cats’ computer lessons are coming on well. They now know all there is to know about the fun to be had with the delete key...

I ‘met’ Jen through Twitter and she generously offered to review the first book in my Dylan Scott mystery series, Presumed Dead. Was I nervous? Hell, yes. You see, I knew she was a paranormal romance junkie. Not only did she love my book though, she asked (yes, asked!) to read more in the series.
Me? I read mysteries, mysteries and more mysteries. When I need a break from murder and mayhem, I read contemporary romance. But we readers are strange creatures. I’m often heard to say “Oh, I read anything. Well, except science fiction. I hate science fiction. And fantasy. I hate that too. Oh, and paranormal. Can’t bear that.” Then, when asked for a list of my all-time favourite books, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul by Douglas Adams is always in the Top 5. Yes, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul is a fantasy detective novel featuring holistic detective Dirk Gently.
I think it does us good to have a change of reading diet now and again but, more often than not, we have to be forced into taking a risk on reading something out of our comfort zone.
My latest novella, Dead Calm, a Dylan Scott mystery, has been published as a single title and as part of an anthology: Carina Press Presents Editor’s Choice Volume 2. There are four titles in the anthology. Dance of Flames by Janni Nell, No Money Down by Julie Moffett and Pyro Canyon by Robert Appleton are included along with my own Dead Calm.
Dance of Flames features paranormal investigator Allegra Fairweather and her gorgeous hunky friend, Casper the ghost. Right, I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking I don’t like paranormal. Well, I’ve been a huge fan of Allegra and Casper since the first and I couldn’t wait to read Dance of Flames. I wasn’t disappointed. It’s a fabulous story. (And trust me, Casper really is gorgeous!)
No Money Down is a Lexi Carmichael mystery and is pure action adventure mystery. Lexi is SWFG: Single, White, Female, Geek. I read the first Lexi Carmichael story and I’ve been a fan ever since so I was really excited to read this latest installment.
Finally, the anthology features Pyro Canyon by Robert Appleton which is science fiction/space opera. Now, I don’t like science fiction (sorry, Robert), but as it was part of ‘my’ anthology, I had to read it. Let me tell you, I was hooked from the first page. The writing is wonderful and Robert is hugely talented at building a whole new world. I loved Pyro Canyon so much that I had to buy a couple of Robert’s other books, Alien Velocity and Sparks in Cosmic Dust.
So if I ever tell you what I love (or hate) to read, take no notice of me. For me, a good story with strong characters will grab me every time - no matter the genre.

Anyone who has read my earlier reviews knows that I value a good story, even in a romance novel. I want good characters and a sold plot line. Steamy sex scenes are a bonus but can't carry the book. Carolina Home has the bones to be a really great novel and the opening to a great series but it missed the mark in a few areas for me. For starters we are introduced to so many characters and given so much information on these characters that I had a difficult time remembering who's story I was reading. For example, I became so involved in Dawn's back story and Tess’s story that when I went to tell a friend about the book I couldn't even remember the main character's name. He became Josh's dad and Allison's love interest but I couldn't for the life of me remember that his name was Matt.
I can tell you about Matt's Dad and Mom, Tess and Tom and what they do and the struggles they are dealing with in the novel. I can tell you about Luke and his daughter Dawn and what is going on with both of them in the novel and even guess as to what we will be dealing with in future books with both of these sets of characters but when it came to Allison and Matt I could only tell you that there is an age difference, that Allison is Josh, Matt's son, teacher and that they have some pretty steamy scenes between them. Allison has parent issues, think Loralie and Emily Gilmore if you are familiar with the show Gilmore Girls. But Matt is completely forgettable and that makes me sad. I want to like him. I want to know him and I get that his character is guarded and carrying some pretty massive baggage but at some point he has to learn to trust somebody and that should be Allison. I believe he gets there by the end of the book but I'm not positive of that fact and feel like I may have to wait until further books to be certain they live happily ever after.
All of this being said I must admit the family dynamics are interesting. The tight-knit "back to back to back" attitude that you see through out Carolina Home makes me wonder if this will all for one attitude will continue throughout the other novels. The characters are multi-dimensional, strong and pull you in. The setting is beautiful and the bedroom scenes steamy and emotion-filled. All of which help to pull my overall rating up. So although I had issues, many of which may not be resolved until the end of the series, the book earned a solid B from me and I think if you are looking for series with some longevity you may have just found it.

The second book in the Renegade Angels, A Hunger So Wild, is chock full of wild passion. Vash and Elijah’s attraction to each other flames up off the pages. The story is so engaging that the ending feels a little abrupt. However, with so many pieces coming back together (after blowing apart in the first book A Touch of Crimson – review HERE) it is not surprising that this novel is somewhat transitional.
At the end of Adrian and Lindsay’s story, the lycans revolted from their service (servitude) of the angels. There are now three factions at war: angels, lycans and vampires. The lycans are trying to establish themselves as an autonomous group – free from the bonds of slavery. Following the adage of “an enemy of your enemy is your friend”, the vampires reach out to the lycans to forge an alliance. They send Vash to coordinate the alliance – despite her thirst for vengeance against the lycan responsible for her mate’s death. Elijah also harbors a desire for revenge; Vash slowly tortured his friend to death. He lusts for his revenge even as her scent causes him to burn with desire.
From the beginning, everything is upside down and inside out. The angels are scrambling, the lycans are scrambling and the Vamps are trying to take advantage the best they can. A strange respect grew between the leader for the vampires and Adrian in the previous novel. Now with the lycan revolt, we see a similar relationship develop between Elijah and Adrian. The existence of a virus threatening vampires forces a strange truce to develop. However, with the revelations at the end of the novel (and the somewhat cliffhanger ending), who knows what the future holds for these three groups.
Although transitional, A Hunger So Wild is a very quick read. Besides the steamy nature of Vash and Elijah’s relationship (or shall we say their hunger for each other), the evolving relationships between the different groups are intriguing. Not to mention the mystery identity of someone who was thought to be dead and may be, not only alive, but also working to try to bring all three groups into a full on war. We are amazed we have fingernails left from chewing on them!
Gikany and Una really enjoyed A Hunger So Wild, simply because we were left panting for more. This Renegade Angels series is truly heating up and we cannot wait to see what is in store for us in the next novel.

I’m of two minds about Blood Before Sunrise. On the one hand, it’s an urban fantasy novel filled with action, fascinating creatures, mystery, and even romance. The fight to save the world comes down to, literally, the last possible moment, and Ms. Bonilla never lets up on the tension that increases as the story progresses. Throughout the novel I was involved and on edge, tense and worried. Just not so much for Darian.
Darian is a loner by nature and circumstance, and she’s understandably built some serious walls around her heart, a history more fully dealt with in the previous novel in the series, Shaedes of Gray. But, in Blood Before Sunrise, she is no longer alone. She has the support of a good friend, as well as the love of a man who would gladly sacrifice his own life for hers. And nearly has. Unfortunately, Darian is incredibly arrogant and stubborn, and her refusal to trust those who have put their trust in her nearly costs them everything. Her mistakes are unnecessary and numerous, and they became increasingly difficult to read.
Another thing in the plus column, however are the fantastic secondary characters. Raif and Tyler are especially well-written characters, making Darian’s miscalculations and slights even more frustrating. Even Xander Peck, the Shaede king, who isn’t the most likeable fellow, shines in comparison, his own arrogance countered by a glimpse of the depth of his worry for those he cares about.
In terms of nail-biting tension and otherworldly visuals, Blood Before Sunrise is a wonderful story. Darian simply left me feeling frustrated and occasionally angry. She certainly didn’t leave me numb, though. Maybe that’s the only way for her to become whatever it is she’s destined to be: she has to fall before she can truly stand. While not a happy ending, it’s one I believe Darian deserves, even though my heart ached for her a little. I’m looking forward to the next novel in the series, not only for the chance to revisit some of the other characters who are part of Darian’s world, but with the sincere hope that she will finally find the strength within herself to deserve them.

The third book in Ms. Julian’s Forgotten Goddesses series opens with Amity Monroe letting off some steam with a coworker at a local bar. Amity is also known by some as Munthukh, the Etruscan Goddess of Health. Amity continues to use her dwindling powers for healing as a medical aesthetician - helping cancer patients and burn victims regain some of their physical appearance. It’s at this bar that cousins Rom and Remy catch the eye of Amity, and she decides it’s time to have some fun.
Rom and Remy are magical lucani - wolf shifters - on the run for years ever since their families were killed by the evil Mal (think paranormal crime family). While they are meant to fulfill some sort of prophecy, Rom and Remy only want revenge and the opportunity to kill the demon that murdered their families. Knowing that the demon is after Amity, they decide to spend time with her, hoping for a chance to avenge their family.
First of all, I want to say that Goddess in the Middle is not only the HOTTEST book in Ms. Julian’s series to date, but also the best. It is an exciting and sexy romance, full of action, emotion, and danger. I breezed through this story - hardly putting it down.
The sexual chemistry between Amity, Remy and Rom was spectacular. But it was more than that... not only was their relationship incredibly hot--from m/f pairings to full-on menage sex--it was more than sex... it was emotion. Ms. Julian does a superb job making this erotic tale more about the developing love between two men and one woman than simply hot sex. But again, the smex is smokin’!! I enjoyed that throughout the story, the cousins work through their concerns about where this threesome is heading, and all three end up with much more than a few hot nights. The story is lusty and sensual, but simply romantic.
The overall plot continues to revolve around Charun, the Etruscan God of the Underworld, and his attempts to steal power from his sister goddesses in hopes of breaking free from the underworld. Amity and her twin Kari are warned that one of them will be his next target, and certain enough Amity is attacked that night. But we witness a new side of Charun, which has significant impacts to the story arc. However, there is a new twist with the involvement of an evil, mafia-like group, the Mal. They are after Rom and Remy because of the power they hold, and they aren’t above using Amity and Kari to get what they want. We also are brought up to speed on some of the couples and changes that occurred in the first two books.
Overall, I really enjoyed how this story unfolded and played out. Sexy. Exciting. Suspenseful. I hope there is a next story soon because there are definitely some loose ends that need to be resolved. However, the book can be enjoyed by new-comers to the series. Goddess in the Middle is an incredibly erotic, unconventional, romantic love story, and it is most certainly worth the read.

The Opportunist starts with an innocent enough question: What would you do if you had a second chance with your first love? It sounds like a story about second chances and what people will do to get it right the second time but that is where the safety of a predictable story line crashes into the wall at 100 mph.
Enter Olivia Kaspen; she just cannot get out of her own way. She has panache for keeping people at arms length and if they happen to get too close, she does everything she can to run them off. She is a control freak in a slightly maniacal and completely obsessive way. Still, there is an air of vulnerability about her that is heartbreakingly endearing. I cannot help but love Olivia and all her stubbornness. On a fateful afternoon she runs into to her ex, Caleb only to discover that he has lost his memory in an accident.
Enter Caleb Drake, he is gorgeous, enigmatic and is used to getting whatever he wants. I adore Caleb, I completely understand Olivia’s attraction. I could eat that boy up with a spoon! However, when Olivia challenges his theory of self, he becomes infatuated and obsessed with possessing her. The toxic mixture of damaged and obsessed lay waste to their relationship in the worst possible ways. 3 years later he is a blank slate standing in a music store ready to explore the heady chemistry he feels with a beautiful “stranger.”
What I liked: The start of every great book is a great storyline and Ms. Fisher’s angst-filled storytelling doesn’t disappoint. She takes her time describing the scene, making sure that the reader can see, hear and taste every moment as it unfolds. This masterful practice of word painting only heightened my emotional connection to the characters because it felt like I was there, making the story feel very personal. My favorite thing about the book is the continual shifting of the story going back and forth from past to present; it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire ride. I have covered a spectrum of emotions all due to the fact that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this book since I read it. I loved that I couldn’t just passively turn the pages and sigh contentedly; I was passionate about what was going on. In fact, more than once, I nearly threw my iPad across the room. It is rare when I find a book has the power to evoke such great emotion in me but that is why I love to read, to feel something mind blowing. Part of me was a little uncomfortable with how much I loved the book because I have never thought of myself as an emotional masochist; I was stripped raw and perfectly okay with that. I have a Pavlovian response, by way of a lump in my throat, at the mere mention of Jaxson’s, pressed pennies, oranges and peppermint. I am tremendously grateful that the story doesn’t end with this book. Dirty Red, the second book in this trilogy, is in the making as I type this. The only thing I would consider before reading is: it is a beautifully sad, powerful and intense book. If that were not typically your forte then I would use caution when considering reading The Opportunist.

Instead of going straight back he delayed a little longer and went to the park where he'd seen a dying tree. Over the past couple of days as he walked he'd tried to look beyond what everyone else saw and into the way everything was constructed. If he used the magical sight for too long, it made his head ache. But he was willing to risk it today.
He needed to know if he could heal the tree... and then maybe himself.
Dai took a seat on a bench covered in symbols he was unfamiliar with, then took a breath and let his vision slip. He tried to focus on the threads that wove tightly together to make up the tree, but his mind wasn't truly on the magic. It kept drifting back to the few moments he'd held Amanda.
He glanced at his hand, seeing more than just skin lined with faint scars. He saw the magical construct of his body and the golden strands that linked him to Amanda. He wasn't imagining her interest. This was the proof - not that he'd be able to explain it to anyone.
If he had his books on magic, healing the tree would've been easy. He ignored the doubts that rose about fixing his own scars; healing was a fine art for even the simplest of cases and his damage was far from simple. He rolled his shoulders, but the tightness remained.
Tree first. If he killed it, it didn't matter as it was dying anyway. If he healed it... well, he'd be one step closer. He was tired of waiting for Birch Trustees to finish their examination of his library. He and his brother had stashed much of their horde there over the centuries. The secret bank was known for handling... unusual... requests with discretion. For the most part Birch had been nothing but helpful since he and his brother had broken free and become human. The bank had transferred their gold and silver and gems into regular human bank accounts, then supplied fake IDs all round. They had eased what could've been an impossible transition.
At first glance there was nothing to distinguish him from any other man in the Fixed Realm... except he'd outlived Rome and knew magic was real. With the sight he looked at the web of lines that made up his hand as he flexed his fingers. Oh yeah, he was a regular twenty-first century man.
And he was finally able to put into practice the things he'd studied but had been unable to do as a goblin. He didn't need to touch the tree. He could see how the fibers of the truck were snagged and twisted, cutting off the life that pumped through the earth and eddied around its roots. From his training he knew it was possible to heal the damage; whether he could do it was another question.
The risk of failing held him motionless. He'd spent too much time studying instead of acting. He'd waited so long to be rid of the curse, and before that he'd been fighting to be free of the bloody Romans. He wanted a life, now.
He forced himself to act. His fingers twitched against his leg as he imagined smoothing the strands of magic that made up the tree. He forced his will into thought. The tangles unraveled and the tree gave a shiver as the life force of the earth was again able to flow freely. If it had been that easy to break the curse and pull the gray of the Shadowlands out of Roan, they would've been free centuries ago.
He paused to watch the tree and see if the magical changes would hold. The tree sighed as if touched by a breeze, but the changes did more than hold. Buds began to form and new leaves unfurled as if it were spring and not midwinter.
"Too much," Dai muttered and tried to pull back some of what he'd done, but the tree pushed him away. The throbbing in his temples began as he tried to do too much with the magic he could barely control. Then the throb spread, tightening around his skull like hands seeking to crush the bone. With a gasp he released all hold on the magic and let the tree win the fight for survival. He lacked the heart to kill anymore.
