Twenty years ago, there was a secret CIA black ops team called Section 8. When one of their own was killed in action, the team was dissolved. Yet they kept in touch, kept doing the dangerous missions. Somewhere, somehow one of those missions put them on the wrong side of a dangerous man, and now all of the remaining members of Section 8 and their families are being hunted and eliminated.
Dare is son of the original Section 8 leader, Darius. He has lived his life on the edge, trying to stay alive. He knew his life was over when he was set up, tortured and left for dead in the jungle until a Ranger saved him.
Avery is Dare’s half sister... Also daughter of Darius, although she never met him or Dare. She is wanted for murdering two men who appear to be related to Section 8. Because of this, Dare is called in to protect his sister and save them from the continue threat to anyone that knows about Section 8.
After the first couple of chapters in Surrender, you may feel the need to take a breath and slow down your heart. That is how fast things move in the this novel. Within the next few chapters we meet the rest of the key players: Jem, a super crazy CIA black ops master; his brother Key, who busted Jem out of the mental institute and is the Ranger who rescued Dare from the jungle; Gunner, a secretive tattoo artist that seems to be someone who can make things happen; and Grace, the daughter of the original Section 8 handler.
Although there is a lot of information to take in, the first part of the story flows well and the tension remains high. I enjoyed meeting all of the players and learning how they were interconnected. It was also fun to speculate who would do what next. Right from the start, I liked every one of the characters.
There are many shifting POVs in Surrender, but the HEA hero and heroine are Dare and Grace. The pair start on opposite sides but both quickly realize they are better off working together. They both have suffered a lot of horrors in their past, yet neither are so broken that they cannot move on and recognize the good in the other. I enjoyed that Grace and Dare came together sooner than later and put everything on the table, including past hurt. For the most part they were emotionally honest and upfront which made their relationship comfortable and sexy.
Although I did enjoy the many POVs, including that from the antagonist midway through the book, the shifting views sometimes created the feeling of choppiness within the flow of the story. Ultimately, I think this impacted my ability to emotionally connect with some of the characters. Additionally, I felt like I missed critical interactions sometimes - either that or they were missing from the story all together. It seemed like suddenly when I was reading I started missing connections and getting lost. Things would happen and I'd question how I arrived at that point - like I missed a preceding scene or two. I wasn’t sure if I missed scenes, and it was hard for me to go back and determine because of the shifting POVs.
The entire book was intense and I enjoyed the action and direction of the story. Ms. Tyler's use of shifting POV can be tough sometimes, but it makes for an exciting and interesting ride - always in the mind of someone new. It helps paint a broader, more in-depth picture.
With that said, I seemed to get lost and my interest waned during the second half of the story. The first two-thirds had me captivated - learning all of the players and how they are all connected. It was a lot of information, but told to the reader in an exciting and enjoyable way.
I did enjoy Grace and Dare - It would have been nice to spend some more time focusing on the pair. They both survived horrible ordeals in their past yet, are fairly well-adjusted and stable (within the boundaries of this world). You just have to accept that they are emotionally and mentally able to be in a healthy relationship in spite of their pasts. I like that they are mostly upfront and don't spend a lot of time hiding behind false pretenses.
The team on whole is full of great characters. Although they like to categorize themselves into stereotypical roles, they really don't fit any molds. And as "crazy" as they all claim to be, they fit well together.
Surrender is certainly the set up novel for more adventures to come. Ms. Tyler packed a lot of information into the book and created a backstory for the characters so they can move forward. Knowing how much I love Ms. Tyler's Shadow Ops series, I am certain that Section 8 is heading for some exciting adventures that I look forward to reading.

Stephanie: Thanks Jen!!! I’ve been busy writing (which is a good thing)!
Twimom: Yes! That is a good thing! So let’s talk about hunky, intense military men... We last heard from the boys of the Shadow Force back in October 2011. What have they of been up to?
Stephanie: Well, Reid’s story, Lonely is the Night, just released in March 2013! [Jen’s review HERE.] It’s a long novella that finally gives readers closure on Reid and Grier’s romance. You’ll also catch up with the rest of the guys and find out how the Shadow Force series ties in with the Section 8 series, thanks to one particular character (more on him in the next answer!).
Twimom: Your current release, Surrender, is the first story in a new series. What is Section 8 about and how does it tie into the Shadow Force?
Stephanie: Section 8 is about the fallout / families of a group of former military personnel who were brought together to create a secret Black Ops group. Surrender is Dare’s story – his father was one of the original Section 8 members and Dare finds himself hunted because of his father’s involvement. So Dare, his half sister Avery and several others who have an indirect involvement in Section 8 must find a way to work together to save themselves and one another. Gunner is a character you’ll meet in Surrender and he’s the tie-in character for the Shadow Force series. Gunner and Reid are friends and have worked together in the past. Actually, Gunner once saved Reid’s life.
Twimom: Can you tell us your future plans for the Section 8 series?
Stephanie: I’ve just finished book 2, Unbreakable, and that’s Gunner’s book And I still have to write about brothers Jem and Key, so lots of intrigue and lots of romance.
Twimom: Larissa Ione said “No one writes a bad-boy hero like Tyler.” I have to agree. What is so appealing about a man that lives outside of societal norms?
Stephanie: I was literally just telling Larissa yesterday that that’s my favorite quote ever! I just find that most bad boys are typically the most loyal and honorable men – they live by their own code of honor and this sometimes puts them at odds with society and the rules that have been created. Men who push the limits, who challenge the rules in order to save people are always the most interesting to write about.
Twimom: What do you find most challenging when creating your heroes and/or writing their points-of-view?
Stephanie: Really, nothing That’s my absolute favorite part of the book – the hero’s point of view! They always come to me most clearly.
Twimom: I always love to find out what my favorite authors are reading... What is your favorite book you read during 2012? What is your most anticipated read coming in 2013?
Stephanie: I really enjoyed Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire, and I’m actually really looking forward to Walking Disaster by her (which I believe came out the same day as Surrender)…because hello, hero’s pov? I can’t wait to see what she does with it. I feel like it will break the story open in a different way and what an awesome idea to have the same exact story from another character’s point of view!

US Marshal Grier Vanderhall bucked her socialite upbringing to bury herself in law enforcement. She sees things in black and white, which is why it never would have worked out with black ops soldier, Reid Cormier. His way of life--living outside the law--was too much for Grier, and the pair went their separate ways after Grier faked her death in Night Moves (Book 4 of Shadow Force).
Now Grier is ready for what should be an easy job - protecting Benji who is set to testify in a highly-watched case stemming from the world of underground fight clubs. However, it appears that Benji isn't ready to part ways with his former life. When Grier goes missing, her partner Jack calls in Reid for help.
Oh how I have missed the men and women of the Shadow Force. While Night Moves was a wonderful wrap up for many aspects of the series, poor Reid and Grier parted on terrible terms. It is wonderful for long-time fans of the series to finally see these two have their HEA. However, you do not need to have read the earlier books to enjoy Lonely is the Night. The story is independent from the other books in the series and can be read solo.
Ms. Tyler is a master at putting her characters in impossible situations, ones that make you want to give up and walk away, and just when you think it can't get worse, she unveils her plan for a happy ending. Lonely is the Night is another suspenseful nail-bitter, breaking the characters down to their lowest before allowing them to rise above the fray.
The novella is chocked full of little nuggets and guest appearances from the first four books in the series, making it a fun walk down memory lane. There are also a few new characters that had me wondering which would appear in Ms. Tyler’s new series, Section 8 (stop back tomorrow for my interview with Steph and a giveaway of Surrender, the first Section 8 book).
There were points in the novella I felt a little confused or that the action was rushed, but since this is a shorter-length story, it is to be expected. I was a little disappointed at the almost gloss-over of the final trial and ending, which effectively killed the building suspense for the moment. However, it is a satisfying ending and on the whole, an entertaining story.
Overall, I delighted in finally getting to see Reid and Grier together and the men of the Shadow Force all content. It was a good conclusion to the series, although I do wish it'd been full length. I'm guessing the next series will follow Grier's former partner, Jack and possibly Reid's friend, Keegan. (Note, this was my guess prior to reading Surrender. The neither of these characters appeared in the first Section 8 book, but I’m hoping we’ll see them again.) If you are new to Ms. Tyler’s work, this is a great taste of her writing; however she is even better at full length.

Why hasn't anyone insisted that I read something by Victoria Dahl before?!?! Her writing is smart, sassy and sultry. Definitely hot, and it doesn't insult my intelligence. I picked up Too Hot to Handle, the second title (with a novella tossed between) in her Jackson series via NetGalley. I'd always been curious, because Ms. Dahl is so wonderfully outspoken and passionate on Twitter, as to how her books would communicate her passion. O. M. G.! Happiness.
I think I clearly identified with the heroine, Merry, in Too Hot to Handle. I saw her as someone that every woman on the planet should aspire to become. Ultimately, as a mom and a teacher and just one of those general people that like to be nice, etc., Merry exemplifies everything I'd like my daughters to be – pretty confident, predominantly OK with who they are, and accepting. As a mom, that's one of the reasons I adored Merry.
Shane treated women – and Merry especially – with reverence and respect. I want my sons to treat the women in their lives like this when they're adults. Overall, I felt that this was a HEALTHY romance read, something difficult to find in books of this nature these days. Kudos to Ms. Dahl. HEAT INDEX: 3.5 out of 5.
Merry came to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to be the curator of a ghost town. It would be her responsibility to restore the town, publicize the town, and make it successful. Or so she thought. Little did she know, she was merely a pawn in a game to control the funds for the town between the governing body and the owner of the property. Merry really hated the council meetings, “It could have been like a lovely family reunion when they met every other week. Instead it was like an episode of Passive Aggressive Theater.” Merry was informed of her pawn status, and was so shaken she knocked over the mailbox of one of the council members on her way out of the meeting. A HUGE drama ensued about the mailbox, and how it presented a perceived 'threat' to the council. I didn't want to believe that people could be that self-absorbed...but unfortunately, it's entirely true of most people.
When we see Merry talking about Providence, the ghost town, she lights up. Her excitement is contagious, and she has a couple of the men on the board for the town convinced she should start seriously working on renovations. But the funds are tied up in court, with the grandson of the owner, Gideon Bishop, the property owner. Merry, however, crafty and brilliant, devises a plan to begin work on the town and get the board to see that it can be successful, and prove to herself – and her family – that she's not just a bit of dandelion fluff blowing in the wind.
Here's what I adored about this story. The relationships. Grace, Merry's best friend, opened her apartment to her friend. It seemed like Grace was her 'center'. Like even though her mom was still around, Merry provided the stability and support that she needed at this point. Her mom had just moved and pointed out that there wasn't room for her to stay any longer. I thought mom's point was in a loving, 'you need to stand on your own, girl' kind-of way. Grace's boyfriend, Cole, was like a brother to Merry, and very protective of her, even with his close friend. Those are the types of friendships that need to be cultivated; these kinds of behaviors need to be modeled for our children and our young adults.
Back to the main storyline...
Enter: neighbor Shane Harcourt, hot cowboy-carpenter. I'm not gonna lie. Shane seemed to be the fairy tale knight in shining armor. It felt to me like he was there to rescue Merry, whether she knew she needed it or not. Conveniently, Shane is a carpenter, and the saloon in her ghost town needs repair. Yup. Another reason for them to spend time together.
Merry has had a 'dry spell' in the sex department. She says, “I'm not picky. I'm just not on the radar. Anyone's radar. I'm the government's top-secret stealth snatch project.” I think that Merry's idea that she's not pretty, nor that any guy would want her makes her all that much more desirable. As matter of fact, Merry seems to be everyone's best friend, “There was nothing worse than being felt out when you really wanted to be felt up. Nothing.”
Ultimately, Shane and Merry agreed upon a 'friends with benefits' arrangement. Initially. “She was not just a friend, but also a sexual being. It felt nice. Or she told herself it felt nice. And it was an option if she really needed access to a friendly penis in the future.” Even though they were afraid to tell Grace, because she had all but threatened to kill Shane if Merry became involved with him, they did manage to steal some moments in social situations. At a barbecue, they managed a moment, and an early escape for some hanky-panky, “Her Wonder Woman t-shirt had worked its charm. Best superhero ever.”
I thoroughly enjoyed Too Hot to Handle, the second in Victoria Dahl's Jackson series. I'm eager to pick up the first title in this series (I already have the novella between book 1 & 2). Ms. Dahl's writing is smart, funny, and truly a delight to read. I look forward to reading more of her writing, and to continue stalking her on Twitter.

Tethered is a wonderful novella set in Meljean Brook’s Iron Seas series set sometime after the second book, Heart of Steel. Although this story can be read stand alone, it does build upon the events in the second book, and therefore, contains some spoilers from Heart of Steel. Also, I feel those that have read the series will have more emotional investment in the characters.
The story opens with hilarious letters sent between our hero, Archimedes Fox and his sister, Zenobia. Their correspondences set the mood for the story, and although there are extremely serious moments during the book, the letters serve as a reminder that the characters know how to laugh at themselves and enjoy life.
An old associate of Archimedes shows up on board the Lady Nergüi, and soon Fox and Yasmeen find themselves on a rescue mission for which they did not willingly volunteer. But no matter the circumstances, Archimedes and Yasmeen seem to always be on step ahead of the nefarious Miles Bilson.
I adore how much Archimedes loves Yasmeen. Knowing she is carries much sorrow from the loss of her previous airship and its crew, he finds a way to help her deal with the painful memories without compromising the woman she is. The fact that he danced for her, joked and played, then finally loved her so that good memories would replace the bad is so wonderful.
Throughout the entire story, the interaction and play of emotions between Archimedes and Yasmeen is amazing. Ms. Brook has a gift for putting heart and soul into words, allowing an array of emotion and sentiment to leap off the pages. The pair are playful with their words and actions. They accept the other for who they are and accommodate differences out of love. Whether through quiet introspection and subsequent actions or passionate outbursts, the pair can communicate at a level that would make real life couples envious. I adore how much they love one another.
Although there are a few known players in this book, Ms. Brook creates a handful of colorful characters unique to Tethered. She gives each character enough background and page time to provide this novella with the richness of a full-length story. And our villain, Bilson, is desperate and cruel with the shine of a new penny. I wanted to strangle him more than once.
In conclusion, Tethered is an excellent story and perfect sample of Ms. Brook’s storytelling talent in the steampunk romance genre. The depth and range of the plot, characters, and actions are on par with that of a full-length novel. The plot twists are exciting; they never feel contrived, and the story flowed well. The action and adventure kept me on the edge of my seat, but it’s the characters and their stories that give this story and series real heart.

Lush visits the next member in a group of friends who call themselves “Delicious” in the Delicious Series. It lays out the relationship of Mary Whaley, the younger sister of Cal Whaley who found his happily ever after with Mary’s friend Juliet (and Gideon Carter in a three-way relationship) in the previous book, Tart. The course of this book reverses the traditional romance where a couple moves slowly from shy glances across a crowded room to steamy and can’t live without the other sort of fairytale.
Instead, Mary is immediately attracted to bad-boy rocker Damien Hurley and gives herself up to a hot and heavy one night stand. She tells herself that she’s too busy building her catering company to nurture a relationship, but still has “needs.” Damien Hurley is just the right guy to scratch that itch. Over the course of the story it goes from all about the physical chemistry to deeper, sweeter emotions. The story does develop a kind of depth that is missing at the beginning of the book.
It would seem that Lush has a lot of elements which make it easy to want to read: great food (I got hungry reading it) steamy sex, celebrity, ease with money, and supportive people who love you. It’s those same elements, however, that make a significant depth difficult to develop—the characters don’t really struggle with anything except themselves. In fact, as characters, they had nothing in common except their mutual attraction to each other. The emphasis at the outset on the physical connection makes it an unemotional read. By the time the characters develop deeper feelings, I was already over it. It would have made a better TV movie than book.
At its core, Lush is about trust, trust in oneself and trust in someone else. I felt Mary should have given Damien more of the benefit of the doubt when push came to shove. Mary proved herself in the previous books to be too smart to have the self-doubts she had during Lush. Her behavior at the story’s climax was immature and a little baffling. Only the intervention of certain family members brought back my attention and their part was too short. I would have loved to have seen that portion of the book expanded. The plot had a lot of potential, but it didn't really reach down deep enough to satisfy me. Overall, it wasn’t a bad book, in fact, it was better than Tart in my opinion, it just wasn’t a good book either.
