Heart of the Jaguar opens with the wedding of Bear Mountain Wolf Pack leader Owen and his mate, Gabriela, whom we met in the story A Jaguar’s Kiss. Here we are reintroduced to the town doctor Cindy, a jaguar shifter, who is in attendance with her best friend Israel, brother of Gabriela.
While in attendance, Cindy spies Elias, a wolf shifter, who is in town for his good friend’s wedding. Unknown to anyone at the time, Elias plans to settle down into the Bear Mountain pack and become second-in-command to Owen.
After being hurt badly in a relationship during graduate school, Cindy has remained aloof and distant when it comes to men. It’s been a while since Cindy has fulfilled her jaguar’s sexual needs, and no-strings-attached sex is just what she needs. Cindy and Elias experience an intense initial attraction, and since Cindy thinks Elias is only in town for the wedding, he is the perfect candidate to fill her desires.
Once again Ms. Reus shines with her sexy shifter novellas! Heart of the Jaguar is loosely tied to the previous books, with locale and characters linking them; however, it is not necessary to read any of the prior stories to enjoy each of them individually.
What I enjoy most about Ms. Reus’s shifter novellas, which holds true for this one as well, is that the story stays focused on the primary couple growing in their relationship, with any conflict coming from an external source and not internal between the hero and heroine. In Heart of the Jaguar, Cindy and Elias are open and honest with their intensions from the start. They realize that there is huge chemistry between them and are open to it being something more than physical. Elias recognizes it as the mating call. Instead of just sitting back on the information, he shares this with Cindy.
I also like that Cindy lays her concerns on the table early on in the relationship, even knowing that she may lose Elias because of it. Cindy has some issues that caused the breakup with her former fiancé, but rather than hide from Elias and her own feelings, she trusts him and opens her heart to the mating call. The author could have used any number of things to keep the couple separated and delay their union, but instead she choses to allow the characters to take chances, permitting their love to develop and thrive.
The mystery of who is threatening Cindy is secondary to the romance and concludes without major drama or incident. It was a good plot vehicle for getting the pair together on a more permanent basis. In addition, the storyline added just a touch of suspense which made the short story more exciting.
Overall, Heart of the Jaguar is another well-written, sexy shifter novella from Ms. Reus. The story has great set-up and romance. The mating is quick - it's a novella - so there are speedy "I love you’s," which I'm not a huge fan of. However, it felt right - the timing wasn't out of the blue. The pair had immediate chemistry and it worked.
Ms. Reus's shifter novellas are the perfect “get away” romance reading. You can take yourself on a mini-vacation for an hour or so, getting lost in the exciting, sexy world she has created. Heart of the Jaguar is no exception with it’s romance with sizzling smex. The conflict is muted but adds to the overall story. Heart of the Jaguar is a very enjoyable romantic read.

Francesca Stewart enjoys her position on staff with California’s governor. She has an impeccable work ethic, and her support of green initiatives makes those she stands with very successful. But Frankie is lonely, and after suffering a bad relationship in her youth, she is reluctant to make any type of romantic connection in her adult life. However, Frankie lusts after Jake Rios, head of the governor’s nighttime security and considers what it would be like to go out with him.
Jake recognized Frankie as his mate within moments of joining the governor’s team. Realizing he needs gain Frankie’s friendship and trust, vampire Jake reigns in his alpha-nature and takes things slow. However, when he realizes Frankie’s life is in danger, he can no longer sit on the sidelines.
A Vampire’s Salvation is an entertaining novella that kicks off Ms. DePaul’s Beyond Human series which involves a group of vampires hoping to “come out” from hiding and join society. Jake Rios is optimistic that by working with a progressive governor with ambitions for the White House, he can reveal himself and his kind to the public someday. Although this novella doesn’t touch much on this storyline, I liked the idea and hope that there will be future titles that progress the story forward.
The heart of the novella revolves around the quickly developing love between Frankie and Jake. Due to the short nature of a novella, their relationship goes from zero to happily-ever-after in sixty seconds flat. Their initial encounters are fierce, filled with a hunger that is hot. I liked learning up front that Jake genuinely cares for Frankie and wants to take it slow. I adored reading Jake's POV as he headed to Frankie’s door for their second date. It was sweet and romantic to learn how much he wants Frankie but is willing to let her call the shots. But what made the scene was his reaction about seeing Frankie all dressed up, subsequently losing all sense of control. Her reaction:
I’ve unleashed something wild, was Frankie’s first thought when Jake moved toward her.
Thank God, was her next one.
Again, due to the shortness of the story, things progressed quickly, which left me feeling a bit cheated on the development of their relationship. After only two days together, they profess love, which rubbed me the wrong way a bit. In addition, Frankie adjusts rather quickly to the idea Jake is a vampire, and forgiveness came a bit too easily for my tastes. Unfortunately, when the author only has so many pages, things will move along rapidly at times.
In the end, A Vampire’s Salvation is a delightful novella. The story is sexy and fast paced, with a touch of suspense. The concept of the series is enjoyable and entertaining. I do think the story would have been a bit better with more length and development, and I'm not a fan of the immediate "I love you," so that brought it down a little for me. However, I am looking forward to reading a second story, knowing that there is much more to this political game than what was presented in this novella. The epilogue has me hooked for round two!

Firstly, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read this new novel by Ms. Mayburn, as I’ve read quite a few of her stories and have yet to find one I didn’t like. Secondly, this story encompasses two topics I tend to be very greedy about reading, in no small part because both deserve far more attention than they generally get: the effects of PTSD in the brave men and women in uniform who fight for our country, and the BDSM lifestyle, which certainly hasn’t always gotten a fair shake in popular media and literature. I think it’s wonderful that Ms. Mayburn is tackling these subjects, and I was pleased to see both in such good hands.
One of the things that works best about this story is that both of the main characters’ PTSD appears as independent problems which are established on opposite ends of the path they’re both navigating, while the idea of the BDSM lifestyle as a means of healing and relief lies in the middle. Both Michelle and Wyatt have been shouldering their burdens for a long time by themselves, but it’s not until each learns to redefine what it means to let go that they are able to see that a better future lies ahead of them. It’s an intriguing idea, and, in Michelle and Wyatt’s case, it works extremely well.
An important and well-made point that Wyatt learns in Still is that submitting does not equate to weakness or loss of control. Alpha through and through, he’s been trained to keep his troubles to himself and be the rock that others can depend on in their own time of need. But, Wyatt’s PTSD manifests in a variety of symptoms, most notably debilitating flashbacks which leave him feeling alone and scrambling for solid ground where there is none. Michelle’s understanding of what he’s going through, combined with their mutual attraction and shared combat experience, plus her inherent strength as a Dominatrix, makes her the perfect person to lead Wyatt towards the peace he so desperately needs. In turn, Wyatt comes to accept that Michelle’s pleasure makes him happy (and why not—he’s been attracted to her for years), and by pleasing her through his submission, he finds inner strength and true happiness of his own.
It is a parallel lesson that, fittingly, Michelle must learn for herself in her role as Wyatt’s Domina. As a Lieutenant and surgeon in Afghanistan, she was the epitome of control. Unswervingly determined and often overbearing, there was nothing she wouldn’t do to save the lives of those brought to her, broken and dying, from the front lines. In her life as a Dominatrix, she’s become an expert at hiding her own pain in order to be strong for her sub. Her desire for Wyatt, combined with her resolve to help him find some sense of optimism through purpose and reward that only a sub, specifically her sub, can understand, blinds her to the fact that she can’t be the Domme he needs her to be if she’s trapped by her own past. Eventually, she realizes that by allowing him to help carry some of her pain, she’s allowing him to be the sub he truly needs to be.
In the forward to the story, along with other important details and information, Ms. Mayburn tells how the idea for Still came to be, and it’s definitely not something to overlook. In the effort to explore every possible avenue available to assist servicemen and servicewomen suffering from PTSD, and specifically in the case of Michelle and Wyatt, the BDSM lifestyle makes perfect sense. Based on trust and control, the dynamics of these relationships aren’t what they’ve often been made out to be, as Ms. Mayburn takes great care to show. Coming home may be a blessing for those who serve in the Armed Forces, but very often it simply isn’t enough to keep the nightmares from following, and our returning heroes deserve nothing short of the very best help that is available. I am extremely excited that there will be more of Michelle and Wyatt’s story yet to come, and can’t wait to see how the two of them will fair in the future.

The fourth novel in the Amoveo Legend series is Undone. There are a few surprises in store for those that have started the series from the beginning. Gikany and Una continue to enjoy this series, even though there are noticeable differences in store.
Undone begins a few months after the last novel Untamed ended with a cliffhanger. The council has been split; the Purists have created their own faction, taking most of the original council with them. Now, the Purists are actively seeking pure blooded Amoveos to join them, especially pure-blooded and unmated females.
Although the plot of the Purists is quite dark, Gikany and Una feel this series continues to be an “on-the-lighter-side” read. We were surprised by how elaborate and secure the Purist compound was, but it gives weight to them and shows that this faction has been growing for some time, waiting for the opportunity to reveal themselves. What is surprising is how stratified their group is, and we wonder how it will continue considering how Undone ends.
One of the great surprises in the novel is the existence of other “otherworldlies”. Gikany and Una have no recollection of vampires, demons, ghosts or the like being referred to in the previous novels. At the beginning of Undone, they are not introduced, but shown as fully integrated into the world. Our heroine, Marianna is hanging out at her friend’s club. Turns out, her friend, Olivia is a vampire and it is a club that caters to them. Suffice to say, it was a bit of culture shock for us, but we found the inclusion interesting. We especially loved Olivia and look forward to seeing her in the spin-off book, Tall, Dark, and Vampire. Equally adorable were the hellhounds – we wish we could adopt one.
One of the reasons we enjoy the Amoveo Legend series is the characters. We enjoy the varied characters and especially the personalities of the couples as they find their way to accepting their mates. In Undone, we have the chance to revisit with Kerry (heroine from Untouched) to see how she has grown into her ability and truly come into her own. She is a stronger and more independent woman because of her mating with Dante. However, Marianna and Pete had moments that rubbed us the wrong way. We felt there was an instant where Pete truly stepped over the line and was an overbearing caveman. What shocked us more is that Marianna goes along with it (not that she had much choice) but that Dante, her older brother, did not seem bothered by it. Now maybe there is a back-story (novella/excerpt short) there that we are missing. But although Pete and Marianna make a lovely couple, we felt there were moments when Pete needed a reality check. In the end, Pete and Marianna found the balance that all couples need and their reunion is touching.
If you are interested in a slightly different shifter mythology, give the Amoveo Legends series a try and hope you like Undone as much as we did.

I am actually sad to see the Lords of the Darkyn series end! It was an action-packed, quick-moving off-shoot of her previous Darkyn titles. Guess I may have to pick 'em up for a fix!
Nightbound, the final title in Lynn Viehl's Lords of the Darkyn trilogy hit it out of the park for me! Replete with action, adventure, and a fabulous wrap-up for the spin-off series, this book definitely was an excellent 'closer'! Rarely do I enjoy the last book of a series as much – or more – than the first book. I am somewhat biased toward world-building, and generally fall madly in love with the world at that time. Other books seem like a bit of a let-down in comparison. Not so with this title! HEAT INDEX: 3.5 out of 5, but there was delicious sexual tension throughout!
Lords of the Darkyn was my first venture into Ms. Viehl's world of the Kyn, so I'm not sure whether any of the others mentioned in the series had backstories in prior titles, but it really doesn't matter. The trilogy presented three focus couples – one in each book – and I have to say that Beau and Alys were my favorite! I drooled over the Robin of Loxley lore in this book, and found that Nightbound expertly combined both worlds and left me with just a content sigh & a smile. Not many books can say that!
The Robin of Loxley lore was one of the plot points that drove me through this title. I'll be honest. Nothing compares to a good Robin Hood fanfic or re-imagining. Nightbound was no exception. From the first mention of Richard Tremayne, Nottingham, and Robin, I waited with baited breath for the next murmuring about this infamous tale. I loved the spin Ms. Viehl placed on the story. The addition of the Templars – a theory I'd always entertained with regard to the Sherwood tale – well, that absolutely drove home my **need** to finish this story. I'll be honest. I read it in about 4 hours. Four (pretty much) consecutive hours. The family insisted I go to a movie with about 20 minutes of reading left. The ending hovered over me the entire time I was at the movie. Theories running rampant in my head. I swear, the family KNEW exactly where I was in the book & decided that the 2:25 PM movie would be the perfect choice to rip me away from my book. **grumble**
Beaumaris, our dashing hero, was brilliantly described:
The crystal chandeliers overhead sketched him with thin slashes of amber light, from the tigereye streaks in his thick sorrel hair to the blunt toes and buckled straps of his dull black boots. His shoulders and chest filled out his leather jacket with enough bulge to make Alys think bodybuilder, but the elegance of his strong hands belonged to a musician, and the long, beautifully muscled stretch of his legs suggested an athlete. He was the tallest and most well-built male in the bar.
Formerly a Templar, Beaumaris (a.k.a. Beau) was now part of Jayr's garrison. He's over 700 years old, and he has been a phenomenal fighter for the duration. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised in a home with the head of the garrison who thought of him as a brother. Installed on a secret mission by Richard Tremayne, High Lord, Beau is charged with keeping tabs on an archaeological dig he's funded to obtain legendary Templar artifacts. Purported to have powers to create more Kyn. Um. Fountain of Youth was mentioned, too...Spanish missionaries, indigenous peoples... Yeah. A bunch of **my** topics! **happydance** Little did he know that he'd encounter Alys and her fabulous feminine wiles! What I liked most about Beau was the fact that he knew he was totally into Alys from the beginning, but let her take the lead. He put his machismo on the back burner, and let things develop at a clip that would keep the woman he loved comfortable with him and his eccentricities.
We had a fabulous description of our heroine, Alys, as well:
Tall and slender as a yearling filly, Alys had been graced with skin like sunlit snow, the eyes of a fawn, and the mouth of an enchantress.
Um. Wow. I think I have a girl-crush on Alys. She's smart, sassy, and fearless. Brilliant would better describe her, actually. Because of her upbringing – also orphaned at a young age – she has social skills & social confidence that are definitely far outside (below) the social norm. Oh, and she's my hero because she totally deals with her interns in a kind yet firm way. Jus' sayin'. I can't really discuss much about Alys without giving away this fabulous story, but suffice it to say that I love the way her brain works.
As for supporting cast, we had treason, attempted murder, and a phenomenal leader in Jayr with a sexy, protective partner in Byrne. As the bastard daughter of Robin of Loxley, Jayr was... well... you'll have to read about all the fabulous connections here! They all eventually circle back to the main conflict in the story, however. Mmmhmm. Love.
I'm really sad to see the Lords of the Darkyn trilogy end, but Ms. Viehl has quite a backlist of other Kyn stories to sate my hunger for this fabulous world she's created.
