Review: Alpha Instinct

Alpha Instinct
Author: Katie Reus
Release Date: Feb. 7, 2012
Publisher: Signet
Moon Shifter #1
ISBN: #978-0451236098
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): Paperback (368 pgs), e-book
Book Source: Publisher

About the book:
Fear has a scent. So does desire…
Ana Cordona has been a strong leader for the lupine shifters who survived after all the males and most of the females in her pack were mysteriously poisoned. As tough as she is, with no Alpha male, the pack is vulnerable to the devious shifter Taggart, who wants to claim both their ranch and Ana as his own. When Connor Armstrong comes back into her life, promising protection, it’s almost enough to make Ana forget how he walked out on her before—and reluctantly accept his offer to mate.
The minute Connor sees Ana again, it reawakens a raw hunger. He must have her for his bondmate—his wolf cries out for it. But his human side knows he must proceed with caution because of their complicated past. If he is to truly have her body and soul, he must go beyond his burning desire and win back her heart. Whatever it takes, he is determined not to leave her side again.

But Taggart and his rival pack are not their only enemies. A human element in town is targeting shifters. Their plan not only threatens Ana and Connor’s future, but the lives of the entire pack…

What G & U are talking about:
Alpha Instinct is the debut novel in the Moon Shifter series.  It is an interesting blend of urban fantasy within a somewhat contemporary romance.  Although Gikany and Una enjoyed it, there are some issues we hoped are simply “debut-itis” factors.
Sometimes a novel will warm you up and slowly get you into the world and the “conflict.”  This is not one of them; we begin with Ana facing off with the rival pack adjacent to hers.  Alpha Instinct wastes no time in showing that pack politics are not all they are cracked up to be.  Gikany and Una enjoyed the weight of politics and the war of perceptions and prejudices that seem to permeate the world that Ana lives in. The idea that there is a overall council that governs the pack is very interesting as it is balanced between the notion that a pack (and most importantly its alpha) must be able to protect their own.  Going to the council for assistance is truly a double-edged sword – they may help you, but if in the process of helping you, they feel you are unable to be a pack, they will then assimilate you into other packs.  The distrustful feelings that permeate the interactions between different established packs and between humans and packs add to the drama and mystery of who the “big bad” is.  The “whodunit” aspect of the novel is gripping and was well woven into the overall pace of the novel.  The reader ends up suspecting everyone, which keeps you on pins and needles until the very end.
Two great examples of the overwhelming reality of prejudices are the relationship of Ana and Vivian and between Ana and Kaya and her son Matt.  Ana is a wolf shifter and Vivian is a young jaguar cub.  Ana treats Vivian as if she is her own child, not just one of the pack, which is an oddity.  Since Vivian is a jaguar, the fear that Ana would reject her or worse, kill her for trespassing, forces Connor to keep her a secret from Ana.  Combine this with the friendship Ana has with Kaya and Matt Dunlauex (two humans), and you can see Ana’s perceptions change.  She didn’t realize that her friendship with the Dunlauxes was mutual, nor what the friendship would mean to her and her pack.  Watching the development of Ana and Vivian’s close bond and the continued friendship between Kaya and Matt gives the foundation in the novel for the future books that will show this pack is one that wants to change the insufferable weight of prejudice in this world.
We have enjoyed novels with more than one POV (point of view).  However, you can have too many in one novel.  Alpha Instinct is a prime example of a novel with way too many POVs.  After much discussion, Gikany and Una feel that the enemy POVs were unnecessary and bogged the novel down.  The information gleaned in them could have been conveyed in a different matter without changing POVs and slowing down the story.  There were some instances that were just not necessary (for example, we have the POV of a big bad that dies…which made his previous POVs completely unnecessary – we don’t NEED to connect to him… he’s the bad dude, we won’t feel pity for him, not that he deserved any…creepy dude that he is).  The “big bad” can be conveyed just fine through the eyes of our heroes and heroines.  We do have four POVs of our good guys group and that was okay since two will be our “couple” in the next novel.
Another issue is our lack of connection to the main couple.  They had a previous attraction to each other and then Connor split…for no reason that Ana could see.  We are just expected to accept that they are intended bondmates.  But we never truly felt the connection between them.  It was as if the preexisting relationship/interactions was the justification.  But since we didn’t experience it, the relationship between the two main characters in the book was hollow.  It seemed like a cheat to get out of having to develop the main characters and most importantly their connection to one another.  As the reader, you just do not feel the emotional ties between them.
The shapeshifter mythology was slightly lacking.  We know they are packs, some of the natures of shifters, but we do not get any background or foundation on how the mythology is based or how it works.  We just have to accept the dribs and drabs of information as they come to us.  It’s shallow and somewhat vague.  Perhaps in the next novel, more of the nature and mythology will come to light.  Plus we have a stronger connection to the couple in the next book because we have watched them meet and interact in this book. The foundation is laid and we cannot wait to see what transpires between Liam and December.
All in all, this is an enjoyable read but it did lack the depth and convictions that the foundation a more polished novel would accomplish.  The transitions between scenes were a little jumpy, due in large part to having too many POVs.  We had stronger connections to the supporting characters than the main characters.  But all that withstanding, Gikany and Una look forward to reading Primal Possession due out later this year and recommend you pick up Alpha Instinct.

AAD Author Spotlight: Katie Reus

Hello Readers! Today I bring you romance author Katie Reus. Katie fell in love with romance at a young age thanks to books she pilfered from her mom’s stash. Years later she loves reading romance almost as much as she loves writing it. However, she didn’t always know she wanted to be a writer. After graduating summa cum laude with a degree in psychology and working too many jobs she hated, she finally figured things out.
She now spends her days writing dark paranormal romance and sexy romantic suspense. Her publishers include Carina Press, Harlequin Nocturne, Ellora’s Cave and earlier this month the first book in her new paranormal series released from NAL/Signet Eclipse (Penguin).
Regardless of genre, she always includes a happy ending. When she’s not creating stories she loves spending time with her husband and son.
Katie is a featured author attending Author’s After Dark in New Orleans. For more information about AAD2012, click HERE
Please help me welcome Katie to That’s What I’m Talking About.
Twimom: Katie, welcome and thank you for stopping by.
Katie: Thank you so much for having me!
Twimom: Congratulations on your new release, Alpha Instinct (review will be posted tomorrow). This is the first title in your new Moon Shifter series. Can you please tell us a little bit about this exciting new series and the first book?
Katie:  The new series features a group of shifters and other paranormal beings who ‘outed’ themselves to the world twenty years ago. Even though their existence has been known for quite some time they’re still dealing with the fallout of some ignorant humans (some who have let their ignorance and hate build for years).
Ana and Connor are the two main characters in Alpha Instinct, the first story in the series. They have a history together, which is a theme I absolutely love in romance. (I love when two people get a second chance.)

After all the pregnant females and the males in her pack are killed by a mysterious poisoning, Ana is forced to take on the role of pack leader. Without an Alpha, the pack is vulnerable to her neighbor Taggart who wants not only their land, but Ana in his bed as well. Ana and her sisters are financially solid and have no problem running the business side of their ranch on their own. Unfortunately due to vandalism, cattle mutilation and some other issues they’re struggling with the security of their ranch and with their now-smaller pack numbers, they just can’t handle everything.
When sexy Scottish shifter Connor Armstrong comes back into her life, promising protection, it’s almost enough to make Ana forget how he walked out on her before. She can’t forget the way he left without a single word, as if all the time they’d spent together meant nothing to him. However, she puts her pride aside to save her pack. Violent attacks are escalating in town and she has no doubt that sooner or later people are going to start pointing fingers at her kind regardless of proof. Unless they can figure out who’s targeting them and why, a few cattle mutilations and property damage will be the least of their worries. And if Connor doesn’t gain her trust, he’ll never get the chance to claim the one woman who’s never left his thoughts.

Twimom: Wow! Sounds exciting and intense! What are your plans for the future of the Moon Shifter series?
Katie: As of right now, I have a novella scheduled to release in August of this year (right around AAD!) and the second book in the series (Primal Possession) will be releasing in September. I don’t have permission to show the cover for Primal yet, but let me just say, it’s freaking gorgeous! The 3rd book (still untitled) is set to come out around March 2013. Obviously I’d like to write more in the series but as of right now I don’t know what the future holds past book 3.
Twimom: Ohhh... I look forward to seeing the next cover! Other than paranormal romance, you have written several romantic suspense and erotic suspense titles. Do you have a favorite title you’d like to tell us more about?
Katie: It’s always hard to pick a favorite, but right now His Secret Past is totally one of my faves. It just released from Carina Press last month and it’s about a woman faced with a man from her past a month before her wedding to another man. The man from her past happens to be the father of her child (a child he never knew about, but only because he disappeared on her, not because she kept it a secret intentionally). Throw in some assassins trying to kill her and kidnap their child and it’s very intense and fast paced as well as an emotional journey about two people trying to get a second chance.
Twimom: Which genre do you prefer writing: the paranormal or the suspense? Do you find one easier than the other?
Katie: This is such a hard question! I enjoy writing in both genres and they each bring such different challenges. I research a lot for both genres and when it comes down to it, when I face challenges in writing it’s because of my characters, not genre specific. So, this is too hard! I can’t pick ;)
Twimom: Okay, you are off the hook with that one! You are a featured author at the upcoming Authors After Dark Con in New Orleans (August 2012). What are you most looking forward to?
Katie: There’s so much to look forward to but I’ll try to narrow it down! First, I’m excited to meet so many readers. I’m also really excited to meet other authors. There are some featured authors attending that I might go a little fan girl over. (Ahem, Jeaniene Frost should probably hide from me, lol). I’m also hosting a party with Cynthia Eden, Manda Collins and Virna De Paul that I think will be a lot of fun!
Other than that, I love New Orleans (I only live about an hour and a half away) and just enjoy the city as a whole so the fact that the con is there is amazing.
Twimom: I am really looking forward to going to New Orleans - you’ll have to tell me the best places to visit!
I always like to ask authors about their reading habits... I see that Acheron is one of your favorite books. That book made me weep and shout for joy. (He’s mine, by the way!) Other than Kenyon’s paranormal series, what types of books do you enjoy reading? What was your favorite read in 2011?
Katie:  Ahem, we’ll just see about that! *g* Just kidding…sort of. Acheron *swoon*. Love him. I can’t just pick one favorite book from 2011 but I can narrow it down to two. Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning. If you’ve read the series, omg, you’ll know why. That book was emotional and just freaking brilliant and the perfect close to the Fever books (though I’m stoked she’s decided to write more in the same world). The other book is Archangel’s Blade by Nalini Singh. Honestly, I wondered how she was going to redeem Dmitri after the douchey way he’s behaved in the Guild Hunter series and wow, did she ever. That was such an emotional story and I’ll admit, I totally teared up more than once.
Twimom: Ha! I love “douchey!” Blade was a good read. What upcoming 2012 releases are you most excited to read?
Katie:  Angel’s Flight by Nalini Singh (it’s got Galen’s story in the anthology!), Once Burned, the first book in Jeaniene Frost’s new Night Prince series, and Iced by Karen Marie Moning.
Twimom: Katie, once again thank you so much for taking the time to tell my readers a little bit about yourself and your writing. It was wonderful chatting with you.  I look forward to meeting you in NOLA!
Katie: Thank you so much for having me!

Review: A Sliver of Shadow

A Sliver Of Shadow
Author: Allison Pang
Release Date: Feb. 28, 2012
Publisher: Pocket Books
Abby Sinclair Book #2
ISBN: #978-1439198346
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Format(s): Paperback (400 pgs), e-book
Book Source: Author

About the book:
Just when her new life as a TouchStone – a mortal bound to help OtherFolk cross between Faery and human worlds – seems to be settling down, Abby Sinclair is left in charge when the Protectorate, Moira, leaves for the Faery Court. And when the Protectorate’s away…let’s just say things spiral out of control when a spell on Abby backfires and the Faery Queen declares the Doors between their worlds officially closed.
The results are disastrous for both sides: OtherFolk trapped in the mortal world are beginning to fade, while Faerie is on the brink of war with the daemons of Hell. Along with her brooding elven prince Talivar and sexy incubus Brystion, Abby ventures to the CrossRoads in an attempt to override the Queen’s magic. But nothing in this beautiful, dangerous realm will compare to the discoveries she’s making about her past, her destiny, and what she will sacrifice for those she loves.

What B is talking about:
Eight months after the end of A Brush of Darkness, Abby Sinclair is still figuring out her place among the OtherFolk. She’s not only a TouchStone to her boss and Faery Princess, Moira, but she’s a living Keystone as well, a designation that has more than a few complications of its own. She’s also the temporary guardian of Moira’s infant son, the object of an elven prince’s affections, and the possessor of a Faery relic some would kill to have for their own.
This time, Abby travels to the royal court of Faerie itself, and finally gets the answers to some of her most vexing questions. That she doesn’t like some of those answers is to be expected, but Pang made it clear in the previous novel that she’s not inclined to make the journey easy for either her characters, or her readers.
Once again, Abby is tossed into the most impossible situations, many of which don’t turn out well, though they are a lot of fun to read. She is still a delightful mix of snarky wit and mortal vulnerability, and carries the weight of two worlds with competing bouts of resignation and determination. She is sometimes hurtful and always stubborn, but she admits her mistakes and would die for those she loves.
As dark as A Sliver of Shadow occasionally becomes, Pang balances it well with hilarious dialog and an enthusiastic sense of humor. The returning cast of characters, especially Phineas, the pervy miniature unicorn, is a welcome addition to the madness. Abby’s friends are colorful and fierce, and the more she learns about herself, the stronger those bonds become.
Abby’s romantic entanglements are just as enjoyable this time around, despite my lingering concerns for her happiness from the last story. She finds a kindred soul in Talivar, the “Crippled Prince,” who’s vastly different from Brystion, but good for Abby in a lot of ways. Brystion is back and vying for her affections, too, I was happy to see, and for a little while, she manages to have them both. The possibilities that are hinted at between the three of them are just lovely, even though Pang stops the fantasy at some well-orchestrated teasing.
A Sliver of Shadow is an excellent follow up in this series, and handily carries on the momentum established in the first story. Abby and her friends are easy to become attached to, and I found myself thoroughly invested in their shared story, both cheering for them and worrying for them as they made their way through the twists and turns of the novel. Pang has proven that she’s a consistently able writer, never giving up too much, while making Abby an open, relatable heroine who’s both mystifying and irresistible. I’ve enjoyed every bit of this series so far, and cannot wait to find out what’s in store next.

Bs Rating:
Loved it - enthusiastically recommend (A)

AAD Author Spotlight: Allison Pang

Hello Readers! Today I bring you urban fantasy author Allison Pang. A marine biologist in a former life, Allison turned to a life of crime to finance her wild spending habits and need to collect Faberge eggs. A cat thief of notable repute, she spends her days sleeping and nights scaling walls and wooing dancing boys….Well, at least the marine biology part is true. But she was taloned by a hawk once.  She also loves Hello Kitty, sparkly shoes, and gorgeous violinists.
She spends her days in Northern Virginia working as a cube grunt and her nights waiting on her kids and cats, punctuated by the occasional husbandly serenade. Sometimes she even manages to write. Mostly she just makes it up as she goes.
Allison is a featured author attending Author’s After Dark in New Orleans. For more information about AAD2012, click HERE
Please help me welcome Allison to That’s What I’m Talking About.
Twimom: Allison, welcome and thank you for stopping by.
Allison: Thanks so much for having me!
Twimom: Congratulations on your upcoming release, A Sliver of Shadow (review will be posted later today). This is the second title in the Abby Sinclair series. Can you please tell us a little bit about this exciting series and your new story?
Allison:  Sure. So far, we’re following the story of Abby Sinclair – a mortal woman thrust into the mysterious world of the OtherFolk. A Sliver of Shadow picks up about six months after A Brush of Darkness. Things have changed a bit as Abby settles into her life as TouchStone to the Protectorate, living with Phineas and a bodyguard in the shape of Moira’s brother.
Of course things are never that easy, and when Moira is called away to the Faery Court, a new Protectorate shows up and tries to claim Portsmyth for herself…and that’s when the fun begins.

Twimom: What are your plans for the future of the Abby Sinclair series?
Allison:  I’ve been contracted for three books so far from Pocket, so I’m going to do my best to have this particular story arc finished with the conclusion of the third. Though there are a few loose ends that could easily be taken into another direction, should I get the opportunity to do so – quite possibly with another character. Melanie, in particular, has a story of her own to tell.
Twimom: Do you enjoy writing any other genres? Do you have any other works in progress?
Allison: I’m definitely a fantasy writer – I’m happy with anything where I can mix the magical with the mundane. I am currently working on more of a high fantasy type story right now (with a few Steampunk type elements woven into it.)
I’m also at work on a graphic novel called Fox & Willow which will be released online this spring. It’s a pet project of mine involving fairy tales, drawn by one of my favorite artists. You can check it out over at http://www.sadsausagedogs.com, although the actual comic won’t be released for another month or so.
Twimom: You are a featured author at the upcoming Authors After Dark Con in New Orleans (August 2012). What are you most looking forward to? Is there an author you are excited to stalk er, meet?
Allison: The best part of AAD is getting to hang out with the readers and just learning more about them. I love to hear what sorts of things they enjoy reading about. :-)
I had a blast last year meeting so many authors as well – I’m definitely looking forward to catching up!
Twimom: I always like to ask authors about their reading habits... What types of books do you enjoy reading? What was your favorite read in 2011?
Allison:  I’m definitely a fantasy/sci-fi girl. I do enjoy romance in the books I read, though the book itself doesn’t specifically have to *be* a romance. My favorite book last year was Namaah’s Blessing by Jacqueline Carey.
Twimom: What upcoming 2012 releases are you most excited to read?
Allison:  Gah – there are so many books coming out this year and TBR pile just keeps growing. There’s new stuff coming out by many of my favorite authors, but right now I’m really looking forward to Casket of Souls by Lynn Flewelling. (I adore the Nightrunner series!)
Twimom: Allison, once again thank you so much for taking the time to tell my readers a little bit about yourself and your writing. It was wonderful chatting with you.
Allison: Thanks, it was great to be here!

REVIEW HERE

Closing the distance between them in less time than it took to blink, Adrian asked, “Where is she?”

“Bathroom. Where’s Trent?”

Adrian was struck again by the confidence and command with which the lycan carried himself, an innate self-assurance that had enabled Elijah to swan dive out of a plummeting helicopter despite his terror of heights. It was also responsible for drawing attention to him as a possible Alpha in the lycan ranks.

Deliberately testing him, Adrian replied with provocative disregard and vagueness. “Obeying orders.”

Elijah nodded curtly, hiding any adverse reaction he might have had to the nonanswer. “There’s a demon in the store. One of the night clerks.”

“Not our problem.” North America was Raguel Gadara’s territory. It was the seven archangels’ responsibility to police demons. Adrian had been created solely to hunt renegade angels. Aside from Sammael – or Satan, as he’d become known to mortals – most demons were unworthy prey for a Sentinel.

“I think this one might be a concern. He was trailing the woman around the store.”

“Keep an eye on him. And escort Lindsay to me the moment she comes out.”

“You want me to watch her? What about you?”

Stopping when they were shoulder to shoulder, Adrian turned his head and met the lycan’s gaze. He knew Elijah wasn’t concerned about his well-being so much as curious about Lindsay’s importance. “I can manage on my own for a few minutes.”

He continued on, stopping in the Asian food section before rounding the endcap. He was halfway through the baking-supplies aisle when Lindsay appeared at the end. Elijah was directly behind her.

“We have everything we need,” Adrian told her, “unless you have some requests.”

She paused midstep. Although her pose appeared casual and relaxed on the surface, he felt the razor-sharp tension in her. An inexplicable breeze ruffled the thickest blond curl draping over her brow.

He sensed the demon behind him before Lindsay spoke.

Her brown eyes turned as dark and hard as black onyx. “Back away from him, asshole.”

Power rippled down Adrian’s spine and spread outward, disabling the security cameras in the store with an electrical surge. Elijah bared his canines in a savage snarl.

“Call off your dog and bitch, seraph,” the demon hissed behind him. “I don’t want any trouble.”

“Bullshit,” Lindsay snapped. “I can feel the evil in you.”

Adrian made a quarter turn, affording him a simultaneous view of both Lindsay and the creature she was bristling at – a dragon whose hands flexed beside his thighs, preparing to expel the not inconsiderable fire power Adrian sensed in him. As far as demons went, he was merely a nuisance to a being of Adrian’s age and power, but the rapaciousness with which he regarded Lindsay and the disrespect he showed her was intolerable.

“If you apologize to the lady for your rudeness,” Adrian said softly, “I might refrain from eviscerating you.”

“Fuck.” The dragon held up both hands, his eyes darting. “I’m sorry, lady. Just tell her to stand down, seraph, and I’ll walk out of here.”

The demon’s mortal guise was that of a sandy-haired, ponytailed teenager with baggy clothing and a name badge that read SAM, but there was a reptilian coldness to his gaze that betrayed a far darker interior. Dragons were a nasty class of demon, prone to terrorizing mortals for sport before making a snack of them. But this guy was Raguel’s problem; Adrian had bigger game to hunt.

Adrian flicked his wrist dismissively, already bored with the delay. “Go.”

“I think not,” Lindsay growled.

A streak of silver raced past Adrian’s eyes. His gaze followed with equal speed.

For an instant, the dragon swayed with a throwing dagger protruding from his forehead and his mouth agape in a frozen look of disbelief. Then his body disintegrated into embers, falling into a pile of ash half the height of the man. The suddenly anchorless blade cut through the debris and clattered to the floor amid a stunned silence.
